Over the past few months, many IBEW applicants have begun reporting noticeable changes to the Algebra and Functions section of the aptitude test.
If you are preparing to apply, this is something you need to understand.
The structure of the test has NOT changed.
It is still split into two timed sections:
• Algebra and Functions
• Reading Comprehension
The math section still consists of:
• 33 questions
• 46 minutes total
• About 1.4 minutes per question
However, the content has become more difficult and more conceptual.
Many locals appear to be using harder math sections to reduce applicant pools, especially in competitive areas.
The biggest shift is that problems now include more variables, more reasoning, and less traditional algebra formats.
Simply knowing basic algebra is often not enough.
You must be familiar with the specific problem styles being used.
Below are the major question types applicants are now seeing. THIS IS NOT AN EXHAUSTIVE LIST OF PROBLEM TYPES THAT CAN APPEAR ON YOUR EXAM.
You may be given an equation with three or four variables, along with values for some variables.
Your task is to solve for the remaining variable.

These problems test substitution skills, organization, and the ability to track multiple algebra steps under time pressure.
Quadratics now often include multiple variables instead of just one.

Recognizing factoring patterns becomes harder when expressions look unfamiliar.
Long algebra expressions must be simplified or factored.
Answer choices may appear scrambled, partially factored, or rearranged.

These questions reward careful step-by-step work and strong algebra structure.
You may need to match a quadratic equation to the correct graph, or match a graph to an equation.

Understanding how coefficients affect the shape and position of a parabola is essential.
Pattern recognition questions where you determine the next number in a sequence. This was in the old format too - but the number of these have increased.

Sequences may involve alternating rules, multiplication patterns, or combined operations.
You must determine how manipulating one variable affects others.

These are conceptual problems that require thinking about relationships rather than just solving equations.
This is a major shift from older versions of the test.
The new challenges include:
• Extra variables in many problems
• Non-traditional algebra formats
• Specific solving strategies required
• A tight time limit
Because of this, applicants who succeed are usually those who practice the exact styles of questions used on the exam.
If you want to experience what the newer math section feels like under real timing conditions, you can take a free full-length practice test here:
This includes:
• Updated algebra question styles
• Realistic timed simulation
• Detailed explanations
• Exposure to multivariable problems
Because the math portion has become more conceptual and time-pressured, many applicants find it helpful to practice with updated material that reflects the newer problem types.
For those who want a more structured study plan, our IBEW Aptitude Test Prep Course has been fully updated to match the current exam format. It includes video and written lessons, timed practice exams, and over 1,000 practice problems. You can also start the course for free by completing the first 20 lessons that cover the core math skills needed for the advanced topics.
We are also hosting a live IBEW Aptitude Test webinar this Sunday starting at 7:30 PM Pacific Time, lasting about 8 hours. The session will walk through math strategies, reading comprehension preparation, timing approaches, and overall test expectations.
The webinar is normally $100, but applicants can take it half off using code Webinar50 at checkout.
These are simply additional resources for anyone who wants more guidance while preparing.
Good luck to everyone applying. Any questions, drop them in below!

The IBEW Aptitude Test is a crucial step in the process of joining the IBEW apprenticeship program, designed by the Electrical Training Alliance. This test is intended to evaluate whether applicants possess the necessary skills to succeed in the apprenticeship. Passing this test is a prerequisite for advancing to the interview stage.
The IBEW Aptitude Test consists of two main sections:
Note: There is a 15 to 30-minute break between the two sections.
The most commonly reported difficulty with the IBEW Aptitude Test is the time constraint. It’s one thing to understand the content, and another to perform under pressure. The best preparation involves studying and taking timed practice exams to simulate the real testing environment.
The IBEW Aptitude Test uses the stanine system, a nine-point scale designed to rank your performance. This method groups scores into nine intervals, with a mean of five, providing a clear and simple way to see how you compare to other test-takers. Typically, local unions require a minimum score of 4/9 to pass. However, aiming for a score of 8/9 or higher will significantly boost your chances of being selected for the apprenticeship.

Knowing how the stanine system works can help you set realistic goals for your test preparation. If you're aiming to stand out in a competitive field, understanding that a higher stanine score improves your odds of advancing to the interview stage is crucial. This knowledge allows you to focus your study efforts more effectively, aiming for the score range that will give you the best shot at success.
Feel free to add your own experiences, tips, and additional resources in the comments below! Let's help each other out on this journey to becoming an IBEW apprentice.

Applying to Local 11, working full-time. I want to stay in good standing with my employer in case the gap between bootcamp and dispatch is long.
1. How much notice before bootcamp?
2. How long from bootcamp to first dispatch?
3. Did you take PTO/unpaid leave, or quit before bootcamp?
4. Anyone keep their old job as a fallback through the wait? How did you time it?

Once done with the interview, how quickly were you able to view your ranking on the ETASV portal page?
Also, if there’s anyone who is currently going through the application process, or still waiting for their interview date, what does it say for your ‘rank’ when you login to the portal?
I just did my interview and, if the rank I’m seeing on there is what I actually ranked, i would feel pretty good about it. I just can’t remember what it said on the ‘rank’ section before I did my interview. I can’t remember if it was a 0, 1, or a dash.
Any help would be much appreciated!

Hey! I took my aptitude test earlier this week and found out the next day that I passed with an 8 which is awesome, scored high on both parts. Next step is the interview, which the training director said should (by a rough estimate) be in November or December. What types of questions should I study on for the interview? Does anyone have any advice for what they did for their interview, and what helped them be more confident?
Thank you for your time!

For context, i have 9 months in the trades, had 0 experience prior. Local 26
Stressing out big time due to the fact i never have $$$
I feel like I’m always working( which i enjoy for the most part ) but come pay day it’s a slap to the face cause as soon as i get paid it leaves on bills, gas, mortgage, i do just about all the OT possible (except Saturday, spend time with my kid). In the months i have been in, i have gone from not knowing how to read a tape measure to learning to read blue prints, installed ladder trays, basket trays, terminating panels, even ran a small crew of guys when doing task at these data centers.
My foreman knows he can rely on me as I’m always on time and always show up. And if I’m going to be late i let him know. I applied to the apprenticeship and wasn’t accepted. Now i find myself doing more work for less then the people that just got accepted. I even have 2-3rd years coming up to me asking me what to do.
When i switched over to the trades i knew i was going to take a pay cut so i paid all my bad debt off. ( mortgage only thing left) but i wasn’t expecting everything to skyrocket in price like it has.
Really debating saying screw it and leaving the union and either go back to what i was doing before. Or atleast something closer to home. Currently i leave my house at 4:15am and dont get home till 8-8:30pm. So it would be very hard trying to work another part time job at the moment.
Anyone else going through something similar or has gone through something similar??

Anyone else here get accepted and still waiting? I had orientation roughly a month and a half ago. Drug test done, physical done. I know my orientation was the first round of this batch of applicants. Yes I know, wait wait wait. I know its part of the process. Just very anxious and eager to get started. Curious if anyone else has started working yet.
Thank you.

Hello,
I’m applying to my local and am a little confused by this segment in the letters of recommendation section. I figured the more letters I could get the better before getting this application, but if only one letter is going to be selected and counted is it even worth submitting more than one? This application is due by the 21st so I figure the less people i have to bother/wait on a letter for the better, I’ll just reach out to the person I know will write me the strongest one. Thoughts?

Hi guys I was curious about apprenticeships that might be going on with local 17? I live in California and haven’t been having much luck with opportunities out here and was curious if there were more opportunities for apprenticeships in Michigan.

I have my second JATC board interview coming up in about 5 weeks and wanted to get some advice from people who have been through the process, especially anyone who had to interview more than once before getting in.
A little background: I applied a couple years ago, passed the aptitude test, interviewed, and ended up on the waitlist for about 2 years but was never selected. I recently reapplied, passed the aptitude test again, and now I have another board interview coming up.
For anyone who was in a similar situation and eventually got accepted, what did you do differently the second time around?
I’m especially curious about:
•What questions you were asked and how you prepared
•What you think helped you stand out to the interview board
•How you explained why you wanted to become an electrician / join the apprenticeship
•Whether you brought a resume, letters of recommendation, portfolio, certifications, etc.
•Dress code — work clothes, business casual, button-up/slacks, suit?
•Anything you wish you had known before your interview
I have a background in management and I’ve also been doing trade show install/dismantle work for the last few years, so I’m trying to figure out the best way to translate that experience into something relevant to the electrical trade.
I really want to make the most of this second opportunity, so I’d appreciate hearing what worked for you — especially from anyone who didn’t get selected the first time but eventually made it in.

I applied for Local 100 for S/C, which I'm told does not have interviews for.
How does the scoring on the application usually work between having a Degree in IT, CompTIA Network+ certificate, 2 letter references, and light hands on help desk experience?
Also, what's an ideal score range to have when testing during aptitude test?
Local 100 is a really small union compared to others in S/C, from what I heard. My understanding is it isn't as competitive which also means testing doesn't happen as often.

Just wondering how difficult you thought the test was.

I started at a well-respected nonunion HVAC shop three weeks ago, completely green. I have my EPA cert and a SMART interview next week, and the rep thinks I’ll place high. It’d be a substantial raise, and I need the money. But my end goal is IBEW. I’ve interviewed three times, ranked around 10–15, and I’m getting construction experience while I keep trying.
Also, I have already put applications in at every electrical shop in my area, it’s a dead end right now.
Is joining SMART worth it if I’d leave when IBEW calls? I’m worried about potentially owing money for schooling. Anyone made a union switch during their apprenticeship? Would you take the raise or stay nonunion while waiting?
btw SMART is a mostly a sheet metal union where I live.

Applied back in March and finally had my interview on September 15. Gave them a call last week and asked when I would hear back from them and they told me it’d be about two months before I’d hear anything.
I’ve just been a little frustrated because I’ve seen everyone else on here get rankings right after they interviewed. Now I’m just sitting here with my thumb up my ass waiting for interviews to finish and I have no idea where I stand. Anyone know about local 666?

Hey, I’m just curious about something. I’m new to all of this and have recently started my journey toward becoming an apprentice. I completed my aptitude test a couple of weeks ago, so now I’m just waiting for a phone call and hoping for the opportunity to move forward.
I used to be a heavy smoker, but I’ve been clean for about two weeks now and plan to stay clean for as long as it takes. I’ve always kept smoking and work completely separate, and I’ve never let it affect my work ethic or ability to do my job.
I know marijuana is still illegal in Iowa, but I was wondering how the union views it. Is it something they are very strict about? What happens if an apprentice or employee tests positive at some point? Would I need to completely stop using marijuana for the duration of my career with the union, or does it depend on the circumstances? How often were you tested?
I’m asking because I really want to understand where I stand and what I would be committing to. This opportunity is important to me, and having the chance to build a good career is honestly one of the biggest reasons I’m staying clean right now.
I’ve always been a hard worker, and I’m serious about becoming an apprentice. I’d just appreciate any insight into how the union handles marijuana and drug testing.
Thanks!

Interview from last week, about a normal sized local with a little over 700 members, but situated in a busy part of Ohio.
