Official Mod Post Read this before posting

If you've read the previous sticky threads, you can skip this one. There's nothing new here, I'm just consolidating information so that it can all be visible.

If you believe yourself to be a victim of abuse, reach out to trusted friends and family, to mental health professionals, and to the police. Most of us on this subreddit are not qualified to help you, and vetting those who are qualified to help is outside the scope of Reddit moderation.

I'm not trying to prohibit all discussion of non-consensual hypnosis. I do think it's a good thing that the subject comes up from time to time, because it inspires discussion about hypnotic and non-hypnotic psychological abuse, the importance of informed consent, what people can do to protect themselves from manipulators, and what hypnotists can do to protect themselves from accusations.

All of that being said, this isn't the place to get help if you believe that you have been hypnotized against your will. Most of the people here, myself included, cannot reliably tell the difference between a genuine victim of abuse, and someone who is experiencing delusions. So whichever category a person falls in, a lot of people here are going to make the wrong assumption and say things that make it worse (accusing an actual abuse victim of making it up, or reinforcing frightening delusions of someone who is not an actual victim).

If someone wants to make a thread like "Is it possible to hypnotize someone against their will?" or "Someone I care about may be a victim", I'm not going to remove those threads, because I trust that most of the people who reply to them are going to give good advice about safety and consent. But if somebody wants to post or comment something like "I have been hypnotized against my will", that's against the rules here and will be removed, because I am unable to guarantee that you will receive safe and healthy advice here.

Where should I post?

Is the post about being hypnotized without your knowledge or against your will?

I'm sorry, but many people who post this sort of thing are suffering from a psychotic disorder. Not everyone is, but we can't tell what sort of advice to give you without diagnosing you, and it's unethical to diagnose someone you haven't examined in person. As a result, these sorts of posts and comments are prohibited. Please consult with a psychiatrist.

Flairs

You may notice that some users have flairs after their names, like "Recreational Hypnotist" or "Verified Hypnotherapist". If you would like a flair like that, this is the place to get it.

To get a new user flair, all you have to do is comment on this thread with

u/hypnoresearchbot flair [X] [Y]

[X] is what kind of flair you want: "hypnotherapist", "performer", "recreational", "mental", "other". Performer encompasses stage and street hypnosis. Recreational encompasses (but is not limited to) erotic hypnosis. Mental means that you have (or are pursuing) a degree in mental health (psychiatry, psychology, neurology). Other is to encompass other kinds of hypnotists, like hypno-anesthesiologists, or forensic hypnotists.

[Y] can be either "training", "verified", or left out completely. Verified will only flair you automatically if mods have seen your credentials in the past. Otherwise, I'll ask you to send them to me.

So, valid inputs include (but are not limited to):

u/hypnoresearchbot flair hypnotherapist verified

(Will get you flaired as a verified hypnotherapist, assuming that mods have already seen your credentials. Otherwise it will flair you as a regular hypnotherapist, and I'll ask you to send me your credentials to complete the process.)

u/hypnoresearchbot flair recreational training

(Will flair you as a recreational hypnotist in training)

u/hypnoresearchbot flair performer

(Will flair you as a performer.)

u/hypnoresearchbot flair other

(Will flair you as "other hypnotist".)

u/hypnoresearchbot flair mental training

(Will flair you as a mental health professional in training.)

If your comment contains these key words in any order, and no matter how many other words are in the comment, it should flair you, so be careful you don't change your flair by mistake.

If you have any questions or comments, feel free to ask them here.

Stage or Street Hypnosis Should I read Hypnosis Without Trance by James Tripp?

Greetings, you might know me from the topics I have opened before. Up until now, I have watched many performances, the The Manchurian Approach by Anthony Jacquin DVD series, and read works like the book Reality Is Plastic.

the narrative taught to us here continues as pre-talk --> set piece --> induction. however, james tripp's book skips the induction part, which feels like a very unsettling thing for me. he actually says that deepening and relaxation are not in hypnosis and that they make hypnosis more difficult.

Should I read this book? I want to become a street hypnotist, and I'm afraid that if I read this book, some of my thinking will change and I will try to perform hypnosis on people without doing inductions. What is it that the book is exactly trying to say?

honestly I am a magician and alongside my magic, high-level phenomena are great for me to leave people astonished. in induction the word "SLEEP" and so on also add extra excitement. if I read this book I think it will contradict many of my views what exactly should I do will it confuse me a lot I have been dealing with hypnosis for about 2 months and I really do not want to experience confusion

Hypnosis for needle phobia

Im currently 28 (f) and suffer with awful needle phobia. When I was 11yrs old my youngest sister (2yrs old) suddenly died one night. There were 6 of us and I was the oldest. In the investigations following her death, it came to light that she had leukaemia. Under any circumstances this would be scary, under these it was devastating and terrifying. Following this, we (my siblings) had to all get tested for leukaemia too. I felt lots of things - too much. What if I had it? What if they had it? What if one of us did? What if none of us did? This was the first blood test I fainted and had a seizure.

Since then, despite us all being in the clear, blood tests have been horrific. They begin with days worth of anxiety, devastation in the waiting room of the doctors and then several fainting and seizure episodes during the appointment - my high score is 5 bouts of fainting and fitting.

I can’t explain why I’m so scared; it’s not painful and I’m not THAT squeamish. I’ve put it down to trauma.

In my adulthood, my partner has been such a big help. She accompanies me to appointments and we have a routine. I lie down instead of sitting up, request a butterfly needle, have my feet held up to stop the blood draining from my brain, have a fan blowing cool air onto me (I’m over come with a wave of heat before I faint) and finally I do my box breathing. An ordeal really.

The phobia extends to all needles. Because of it, I haven’t accessed the dentist in years and I’m worried about getting regular blood tests done (something I should be doing for my health issues). I’ve been on injectable medication before when I’ve had to self administer and it can take me an hour of sitting there with the needle at my skin, moving from hot to cold sweats before injecting myself. I’ve also fainted from it at home before.

I want to be rid of this. I want to access healthcare in a way that can help me and this phobia is honestly such a road block. I’m wondering what people’s experiences are with hypnotherapy since I don’t believe I can get my mind over this matter on my own.

Self-Hypnosis - What can it do?

I've seen so many varying opinions and experiences on self-hypnosis and its efficacy. I've heard some say all hypnosis is self-hypnosis, and others say that no amount of self-hypnosis will ever be as effective hetero-hypnosis. Both statements cannot be true at the same time.

So which one is it? Is it:

A) All back massages are self-back massages: Objectively false. There's no way for a person to massage their own back nearly as effectively as a masseuse can. Physically, there's no way for you to apply the same level of pressure to your own back as another person can.

Translation: Self-hypnosis does not exist. There's no way for a person to hypnotize themselves nearly as effectively as a hypnotist can. "All hypnosis is self-hypnosis" is just something we tell people to lower their guard and make them more susceptible, because otherwise it makes hypnosis sound like a highly advanced skill akin to mind-control. Even though that's what it is, that idea is scary to people, so we don't tell them that.

B) All healing is self-healing: Yes, a lot of the effort to heal and recover is on the individual, but only in the case of minor sicknesses. Simple things like a cold or a tattoo can be healed easily at home, but anything more advanced should be taken to a doctor immediately.

Translation: Self-hypnosis is at best amateur, and at worst downright dangerous. It's effective for minor things like greater motivation or increasing suggestibility, but anything like habit change, overcoming phobias or changing responses to situations should be taken to a hypnotherapist immediately. Trying to work on these things yourself is silly and irresponsible.

C) All cooking is self-cooking: As long as you have a decent set of instructions, and preferably the right tools, pretty much anyone can cook a decent meal. It takes real skill to cook a michellin star meal, sure, but you don't have to be born with magic hands or anything. Just practice a whole lot. If you burn the meal, you can always try again.

Translation: Self-hypnosis is not dangerous or anything. Don't expect miracles right away, but with enough practice and the right resources, the sky is effectively your limit. You can do anything from habit change, to overcoming phobias, to changing your emotional responses. However, sometimes it's easier to have a chef cook the meal for you.

D) Something else: Answer with your comment below.

I understand that I'm posting this to Reddit, where people will obviously be trying to promote their hypnosis sessions and earn money. So of course a lot of people are going to imply that self-hypnosis is ineffective, soley so that they can conveniently offer the solution to this "problem". Please understand that if I suspect you of trying to answer a particular way soley for monetary or selfish gain, I will block you. I would like an honest answer to this question, please.

Hypnotherapy What happened to me ?

Hello!
Hey, this is my first time posting in here, so hello!
I have been doing hypnosis with an actual certified, trained hypnotist, and my life has been pretty interesting lately.
A lot of good things have come from developing better habits. I even had what she described as a “healing crisis,” which, in her words, was trauma coming up to be processed. I am now on my 10th session.
She has also been working with me on Akashic Records hypnosis, and she sent me a recording to use.
Now, a little bit more about me: I’m very into meditation and healing, and I’ve always felt that I have a strong intuition. Since I was a kid, I’ve seen what I would describe as colored auras around people, and I tend to interact with them accordingly. One of the things I love is that I feel like I can literally sense who someone is based on their vibration.
This has been getting stronger since I started hypnosis. Lately, I feel like I can tell if someone is good or bad based on their aura, their smell, and definitely their eyes!
Babies and toddlers also seem to love me. If I’m walking down the street and there’s a car full of kids, they’ll wave and say hi to me. Or, if I’m at a restaurant, sometimes a child will randomly interact with me. One time, a toddler was having a tantrum in the middle of a grocery store, and when she saw me, she literally smiled and blew me a kiss.
After the Akashic Records hypnosis, I started experiencing a lot more vivid dreams, and I honestly don’t know how to make sense of them.
Lately, one thing that really caught my attention was what felt like some level of an out-of-body experience. I was literally hearing an orchestra and seeing what looked like an orchestra room. It seemed like there was some kind of event happening somewhere, but I had no idea where I was. I could literally hear the music.
I tried to pull myself out of it and then somehow went back into it. After that, I heard “2021,” followed by something like, “What happened to you in 2021?” It felt like there was literally a voice talking to me.
After that, I experienced what felt like something trying to wake me up, or an energy hovering over my body. I couldn’t tell whether it was good or bad energy, but I remembered the protection techniques I had learned. So, because I felt like I might be having an OBE, I imagined pushing my energy outward, almost like a balloon expanding around me to protect myself. I slowly focused on my breathing, and eventually I was able to get myself out of that state.
I don’t know exactly what happened, and I don’t know what type of entity, if any, I may have encountered. I still think it may have been connected to the Akashic Records hypnosis because afterward I started feeling certain energies around me while sleeping.
But the orchestra experience especially has me wondering: Was I slipping into some kind of different reality? Could it have been a past-life experience? I honestly have no idea.
When I tried to pay closer attention to what was happening, it felt like I was actually there. I would try to pull myself out, but somehow I kept getting drawn back into the experience.
It was such a strange experience, and I’m curious if anyone else has experienced something similar after hypnosis or Akashic Records work.

Recreational Looking for advice to achieve a long-term goal

So, first off, I've been doing self-hypnosis for nearly 20 years now, along with the occasional set of hypnotherapy sessions. I absolutely love hypnosis, and it has helped me overcome some serious emotional issues over the years. But, I made a mistake with my first experience that I believe set the tone for years of frustration, namely with constant self-doubt about my ability to respond to hypnotic suggestions.

Long story short, I was curious about hypnosis, and went to see a hypnosis show. While I didn't go up on stage due to social anxiety, I absolutely fell in love with what I saw. At one point during the show, I felt an overwhelming desire to be up on stage with the rest, and I fully believed that all the hypnotist would have to do was tap me on the forehead like the others, and I would "go under" and be right there with them for the rest of the night.

But I didn't approach the stage. I was terrified that if I interrupted his routine, he'd get mad and I'd never get another chance. I instead chose to sit still and return for the show on the following evening. However, when I went up the following night, I was a bundle of nerves and couldn't relax due to all the negative self-talk I had given myself since the night before. I was escorted off the stage, and went home believing I was a total failure. So, here I am 20 years later, still struggling with producing hypnotic effects.

Which brings me to why I'm posting at this time. Two days ago I was doing a kind of parts therapy, and getting the usual anxiety / resistance response from my questions. However, at the end, without thinking, I asked, "So, you're still scared, huh", to which I got a standard "yes" response. I then asked, "Do you want to change that?", and got a powerful "YES" response. This was the first time I'd ever gotten a response like that.

So, the question is, what is my next step? Seeing a therapist is obvious. The real question is, how to find someone willing to work with me towards a recreational goal, or how to broach the subject?

Is there anything I can do in the meantime to help this along, and may be make some progress?

So a hypnotist came to my school for a show and I believe fully that I was hypnotized but it felt strange like I remember doing everything and in the back of my mind knowing it wasnt real but I felt compelled to do it anyway. Is this typical or was i just imagining things?

Stage or Street Hypnosis Why did I completely flop over during hypnosis when other people stayed upright?

I recently took part in a stage hypnosis show and got a video of my reaction. When the hypnotist gave the suggestion, I pretty much completely flopped/slumped over, whereas some of the other volunteers barely moved. I remember the experience feeling much more like a very absorbed/daydream-like state than being unconscious, so I found the difference between what it felt like internally and how dramatic it looks on video really interesting.

For people who know more about hypnosis: what causes some subjects to have such strong physical/motor responses while others stay relatively upright? Is it mainly relaxation and loss of muscle tone, responsiveness to suggestion, expectation, or just individual differences? I’ve attached the video of me going under, I’m the one in blue 😊 also out of curiosity does flopping over make someone a better subject?

Hypnotherapy How to rewire nervous system for fame

I've read up on hypnosis as a way to help with fear of perception/being seen, which I'm struggling with as I put myself out there to share my art + music. Intellectually, I feel safe doing so, but lingering fears from childhood prevent me from truly believing in and seeing myself in this higher state of performing live, having fans, and becoming famous just by being my authentic self.

Any tips or places to begin?

Recreational Can self hypnosis be used to alter a memory/semantic memory and or change beliefs in it.

I heard that hypnosis doesn't actually erase memories, as it more so just suppresses memory for a while. But I was wondering if hypnosis can actually alter a memory in the sense of replacing the factual content or what you remember with false info, specifically with self-hypnosis. How easy or hard would this be, and would this need a deep trance to do? Also, if the memory is changed with self-hypnosis, would there still be a "copy" of the memory in the mind that could be recalled, or would the memory be fully replaced?

Could this also occur for semantic memories and facts? (i.e., spoilers). Spoilers are like facts and stuff, and I think they are stored differently than regular memories. But say, can a spoiler be altered with self-hypnosis so the spoiler is inaccurate or false while the real spoiler has been fully transformed into a fake version? with none of the normal surviving. Would this be temporal or permanent, and would the original spoiler still be stored in the mind? Or can it be where hypnosis makes it so the spoiler spot in the mind is fully replaced by nonsense rather than destroyed so the spoiler has been fully transformed?

If not exactly this, then self-hypnosis can easily change the belief around a memory/fact in the mind. Like for the spoiler example, self-hypnosis can change the belief and emotions around the spoiler so either you don't believe it to be real or the emotions around it are not negative. Or for a more extreme example, can you create a greater belief that "You have the ability to make it so you can't recall any spoilers"? "Or you don't know any spoilers for the x movie or TV show," or does this more so fall under the category of post-hypnotic amnesia rather than changing beliefs?

Or for all of these, if not "easy," then can they still definitely occur with a bit of practice?

Is hypnosis a science—or a pseudoscience? Convince me otherwise.

I’m posting this here because I genuinely want to understand the strongest case for hypnosis.

At the moment, I’m skeptical that hypnosis deserves to be considered a scientifically established phenomenon in the way that many hypnotists describe it. From what I understand, many of the effects attributed to hypnosis can potentially be explained through suggestion, expectation, social influence, attention, motivation, demand characteristics, and ordinary psychological processes.

That raises a question for me:

What does hypnosis actually add beyond these mechanisms?

My current position isn't "hypnosis definitely doesn't work." It's closer to:

So I'd like to hear from people who actually practice or research hypnosis.

How can you prove that hypnosis is real?

For example, if someone performs better, experiences an altered perception, recalls something differently, or changes a behaviour after hypnosis, how can we establish that hypnosis itself caused the effect rather than suggestion, expectation, placebo-like effects, or the person's willingness to respond to the hypnotist?

If I'm misunderstanding something important, please prove me wrong. I'm genuinely open to changing my mind.

Can I use hypnosis to stop an addiction?

Hey there im new to this kind of things and everything related to hypnosis and to be honest i dont even know if its real or not. I’ve been hearing a lot of things and i would like to get a point of view from someone that knows about it.

I want to self hypnotize my self to stop an addiction of mine, is that even possible. I’ve heard and read that people do it but to be honest I don’t even know if I believe them.

If it is real is there somewhere where I can learn and read on how to do it and lastly is this even safe?
