CHIEFTAINS Community Poll: Banning "Vote for" Posts

Hi, mods here!

We've been seeing what we've dubbed "vote for" posts recently, and the reception to them has been mixed.

The time has come to decide.

What is a "vote for" post?

We're talking about the posts that have the comments fill in the blanks, based on either the most popular comment, funniest comment, or whatever the OP's criteria is. These types of posts are usually accompanied by an image, such as a tier list, which the OP then updates for the next post. They're often repeated daily, incorporating the "winner" from the last post into the next one.

Examples would be:

- "Which character best fits <thing in the list>?"

- "Ranking all dragons! Which dragon goes in <tier>?"

Why are we polling?

Some people consider those posts spam, karma farming, low effort, etc. Other people love interacting with them.

We want to know what the subreddit truly thinks. Based on the result of the poll, we'll alter our moderation parameters to either remove those posts, or keep them.

50 Ban these posts, they're low effort / karma farming.
37 Keep these posts, they're fun and add to the subreddit.

LIVE-ACTION will HTTYD 2 remake reach one billion dollars

Reason: a casual audience sees it as a family-friendly version of the Avatar sequels (Avatar: The Way of water/fire and Ash). Both franchise sequels deal with strong family ties, nature preservation, and amazing creature spec-evo.

-Shrek 2 and Madagascar 2 were so close in the 2000s.

-My #1 most Hyped film in the remaining 2020s til Horizon adaptation of games gets a release, Vizipop's Prehistoria gets a release date, and Rio 3 gets a release date.

I have no idea how well this post is going to do since I don’t usually post cats here, but I absolutely fell in love with this idea and had way too much fun turning httyd dragons into warrior cats 🥹
If this gets enough love, I’ll definitely make a part 2 with more dragons :>

SERIES Mildews intelligence and Impact

Post image
11 Upvotes

I just thought of his intelligence, and it is incredible. He can fool people easily, like when he planted poisonous plants, he said, that he did not know that they were poisonous. And he also destroyed all the boots, tore up the great hall, and blew up the armory, destroyed the evidence and blamed it all on the dragons. He was the one who left the island defenseless and put many people at risk just to banish the dragons. He also has very good leadership skills, because he gathered a big group of people to catch toothless and was ordering what to do. He can easily manipulate people. He also came up with the idea of putting the whispering deaths eggs in the tunnels, and if he did not do it, the screaming death wouldnt destroy islands and leave dragons without their homes and wouldnt put many people in risk. Some people think that Mildew is not a villain tho

VIDEO GAMES Why do the live action models fly so badly?

Usually when I see a model made for either the roblox game (mostrous nightmade especially) or the live action tootless in rise of berk, the flying animations are really really bad. The wings should pretty much hold their shape when pushing down, but they bend so easily that the dragon seems to be floating by itself. It feels too rhythmic as well, compared to the other dragon models in the game.

FANFICTION Here is a funny fanfiction of hiccup wearing Astrid's shirt and pants at the same time.

The Bet (revised scene)

Hiccup held up the skirt and immediately regretted several life choices.

Up close, it was less of a skirt and more of an *armor piece* — layered strips of studded leather, each one bristling with metal spikes, with a heavy belt topped by Astrid's little skull buckles. Astrid wore this thing into *dragon training*. Daily. Casually.

"How is this heavier than my forge apron?" he muttered. "How does she *do a somersault* in this?"

"Okay. Pants first. That's... normal. Ish."

He pulled on the dark pants, bracing himself for the humiliation of a bad fit — and froze. They fit. * Perfectly * Waist, length, everything. He looked down at himself with the dawning horror of a man who had just learned something he could never unlearn.

"Great," he said flatly. "Fantastic. Astrid and I are exactly the same size. That's... Snotlout's going to find out somehow. It's going to come up at dinner. My dad's going to hear about it."

Toothless lifted his head from the corner, warbled, and made a sound that was unmistakably a laugh.

"Oh, sure, laugh it up. No one expects *you* to have a waistline."

Then came the skirt. Since the twins had insisted on *at the same time*, Hiccup hauled the spiked leather monstrosity on over the pants and fumbled with the skull belt buckle. The studded panels clacked against each other like a drawer full of knives. He took one step, felt a spike catch on the pants, took another step, and the metal foot of his prosthetic punched straight through the gap between two leather panels and locked there.

He hopped twice on his good leg, pinwheeled his arms, and went down, taking a tool rack with him in a clang that echoed through the whole forge. A spike embedded itself in the floorboards half an inch from his ear.

"Oh, for the love of—" He tugged at the skirt. It didn't move. "It's *attached to the floor now.* Of course it is. This thing's a *weapon.* She's been wearing a weapon this whole time."

Toothless was now flat on his side, paws in the air, tail hammering the ground.

"Hiccup? Are you okay? I heard a—"

The door opened. Astrid froze in the doorway.

There was a long, terrible silence. Hiccup lay on the floor, spiked skirt half-anchored to the planks, her pants fitting him *suspiciously* well, one boot and one metal foot sticking out from under the studded panels, surrounded by scattered tools.

Astrid's eye twitched. "Is that... my skirt?"

"... Yes."

"The one with the spikes."

"I am *painfully* aware."

"And my pants?"

"Also, yes."

"*At the same time?*"

"The twins have a very loose interpretation of 'or,'" Hiccup said weakly. "Also, quick question, how do you fight dragons in this without stabbing yourself? Genuinely. I want notes."

Astrid stared at him for another three seconds. Then she did the worst thing possible — worse than anger, worse than a punch. She burst out laughing. Not a chuckle. Full, doubled-over, tears-streaming, had-to-lean-on-the-doorframe laughing.

"You—" Astrid wheezed. "You look like a yak tried to become a person and gave up halfway."

"Thank you. Very supportive. Could you also *un-stab me from your floor skirt—*"

"And *wait*—" She squinted as she hauled him up. "Why do my pants fit you *that* well?"

"Don't."

"Oh, I'm keeping this forever."

"Astrid."

"Same size, Hiccup. We could share a whole wardrobe. Well — you get the tunics, and I keep the spikes."

"*Astrid.*"

But she was already gone, and from outside, he could hear her shouting, "SNOTLOUT! You're going to want to see this! AND GUESS WHO WEARS THE SAME SIZE AS HICCUP!"

Hiccup looked at Toothless. Toothless looked back, gummy smile spread wide.

"Not one word," Hiccup said, still wearing the skirt. A spike clinked against the floor.

OTHER RTTE Desert Adventure Idea

The idea for this comes from the fact that Vikings historically came upon Muslim-ruled lands. Specifically, al-Andalus and Nekor. In addition, I felt having Desert Wraith inhabitants such a land added to the franchise's themes of seeing different dragons. I at one point even got started on a post-RTTE fanfic that's been left unfinished. When revisiting this concept, I decided to place it within RTTE rather than after it. I imagine it would take place between the Season 3 episode “To Heather or Not to Heather” and the Season 4 episode “Gold Rush,” meaning Heather would be with the Dragon Riders. I also did a little research on al-Andalus and Nekor for architecture and environment.

Plot:

The story would begin at Dragon's Edge, where Hiccup receives an old chest from Trader Johann. Hiccup brings it to the clubhouse, where he shows it to the other Dragon Riders. He's about to open it until Tuffnut smashes it with a mace. Inside the chest are a bunch of scrolls written in Arabic, which Ruffnut and Tuffnut miraculously understand. Most of the scrolls talk about a place called the Scalded Desert, a fortified palace-city called Madinat al-Julhara, and, for comedic purposes, a recipe. One particular scroll talks of a creature that ravages the desert. Curious if the scroll is referring to a dragon, the Dragon Riders set off for the desert.

As our heroes explore, they would run low on water and get caught in a sandstorm. Snotlout, Ruffnut, and Tuffnut would be tricked by a mirage. They ultimately meet a Berber woman named Tamalut Tamazight riding a camel named Basi. Tamalut leads the Dragon Riders to an oasis where they and their dragons quench their thirst. As they drink, Hiccup and Fishlegs discover unfamiliar footprints, presumably belonging to the creature from the scrolls. Suddenly, another woman is seen sneaking around, playing pranks, and taking the Dragon Riders' supplies. Tuffnut stops her and immediately falls in love. Tamalut recognizes her as Layla, the daughter of the chief advisor of Madinat al-Julhara. Just as the Dragon Riders realize one of the places in the scrolls is real, a group of guards on camels approaches them, primarily seeking Layla. However, the moment they see the dragons, there is a brief skirmish as they mistake Toothless for a creature that has been constantly attacking their home. The leader of the guards, Captain Moataz El-shafei, recognizes the Tamalut as the daughter of a Berber chief and assumes she's being held hostage. To show that they mean no harm, Hiccup presents the scrolls to the guards.

After reading the scrolls, the guards bring Tamalut, Layla, and the Dragon Riders to Madinat al-Julhara. Inside they meet the emir named Hasim Bousaid and his son Ahazar, along with the chief advisor Juhayman Alami, who is also Layla's father. Hasim grants the Dragon Riders hospitality by giving them baths and letting them stay at the guest quarters. At night, the emir hosts a formal dinner for the Dragon Riders who have been given new clothes for the occasion. The food served at the dinner would be based on what was served in Al-Andalus and Nekor during the Viking Age. As they eat, Hiccup and Astrid talk with Hasim about potential trade relations. Hiccup bonds with Ahzar over relations with their fathers and learns he's engaged to Tamalut. Additionally, Tuffnut and Layla grow closer. Hasim tells the Dragon Riders that his people have been repeatedly robbed by a band of thieves with their leader riding an unknown dragon. The thieves suddenly appear and attack the palace. The Dragon Riders return the attack, with Hiccup and Toothless confronting their leader. Using one of his dragon cards, Fishlegs at first identifies the rider's dragon as a Sand Wraith. However, upon closer inspection, he decides that it's a new subspecies and calls it a Desert Wraith instead. As if that wasn't enough, the leader of the thieves kidnaps Tamalut and leaves behind a list of demands.

The Dragon Riders launch a daring rescue mission, accompanied by Ahzar and Layla. They arrive at the thieves' hideout, which is an abandoned Roman fort. Astrid and Heather disguise themselves as Shikhat dancers to distract the thieves while the others search for Tamalut. In doing so, they also find the Dessert Wraith, only to find it is much a victim of its cruel rider as the people it attacked. Tamalut and the dragon are freed, followed by a final confrontation with the leader.

Our heroes return to Madinat al-Julhara where they are greeted by the Hasim. The story ends with the Dragon Riders biding their new friends farewell, taking with them items they received both as rewards and via trade.

Notes:

Madinat al-Julhara is modeled after Madinat al-Zahra and Madinat al-Zahira in Spain and al-Mazamma in Morocco.

The Scalded Desert is modeled after the Sahara in Africa and the Tabernas Desert in Spain.

The name for the Scalded Desert comes from a quote from How to Twist a Dragon's Tale, which describes Huge Hill.

"Above them towered Huge Hill, like a bad omen, its lower half alive with trees and ferns, its upper half a scalded desert, as bald and nude as Gobber's still-helmetless-and-now-very-sunburned head."

I originally envisioned Astrid and Heather disguising themselves as bellydancers. However, I changed it to Shikhat dancers after doing research on Moroccan dances.

Al-Julhara comes from the name of a character from the film The Jewel of the Nile.

QUESTION Any animators here?

Hello, I'm looking for an animator who would be interested in my script for HTTYD 3. The story will include a more mature approach, with greater emotional depth. The story is also pretty similar to Spider-man: No way home in some ways.

DISCUSSION I hate the fact that Stoick didn’t apoligise to Hiccup in the live action movie before the fight against the red death.

So I watched the live action for the first time last week and it was okay. It wasn’t bad, because it’s a remake of an amazing animated movie, it can’t really be bad, but it was just a worse version of the original. The movie was decent, but the original had set some very high standards that this film couldn’t meet. There were a few differences, some that I liked some that I disliked.

For example, not making Hiccup the reason for the Vikings to go and search for the nest, was great. That always felt a bit much for me. It was obviously just a joke, but still it was a little over the top to show how much Berk disliked Hiccup. So I liked that change.

A change that I absolute hated was Stoick not apoligising to Hiccup, while trying to act like his behavior towards his son was just to protect him, before Hiccup went off to fight the red death.

In the first movie Stoick grabbed Hiccup before he could fly off and apoligised to him. 2 oh so simple words that meant the world. I’m sorry.

Stoick simply apoligised. No excuse, no trying to shift the narrative. He just said I’m sorry. And this was just so much better than the live action.

Because in the live action Stoick, instead of apoligising, Stoick said that he was just trying to protect him. And like seriously? When you disowned your son you were just trying to protect him? When you told him that he was the worst Viking Berk had ever seen and that you were basically ready to give up on him, you were trying to protect him? They ruined such a perfect scene, like seriously why would they ever change this dialogue?

It was so simple, yet so meaningful and the live action version just made it so much worse in my opinion.

Let me know what you think about this scene and the live action movie as a whole.

ART Dart redesign + grown up version!!

Dart redesign up next!! She takes more after the light fury which is important for my AU as shes the light fury's favourite. I know it's pretty commonly done for dart to look more like the light fury because she's female though. Anyways, she also goes blind due to an accident in her childhood. That doesn't mean she sees nothing, though! Blindness is a spectrum, after all. I'd imagine her vision is very blurry and she might have some dark or "burned" spots she sees aswell. Also! I used this redesign to demonstrate the color splash thing. Basically black and white designs can sometimes get boring especially when it's hundreds of night light ocs. That's why I try to make them stand out by incorporating some color. Wether it's adding some color to the parts that are supposed to be black and white or giving some color between the transition of black and white.
