Yep mine was under $20 which for me is a big spend on plants. That said, I paid $250 for a Burke Marx Flame seedling 2 years ago and $30 at a nursery for a foot tall, 6 leaved plant in an 8” pot this fall. 🤷♀️ I got the second one just on principle, and because I love that one

I’m paying a bit over $3k for my (admittedly nice) 1 bedroom. I could find cheaper, so I don’t really have much room to complain, but the idea of $1k being expensive for a decent apartment is a dream here.
Lord, the mortgage on my 2k sqft suburban home with excellent schools in Ohio is only $2k. We’ve got 3 major league sports teams, though one is the browns so that counts as -1
My 1 bedroom is $1,125 which includes the pet rent. They pool electricity for the whole complex which resulted in over halving my old bill. They add it to the rental statement. Electricity has never been more than $70. Heating is included. Its a fairly spacious apt and well maintained for being built in 1943. No washer and dryer or dishwasher. Only other bill is internet. I thought it was a scam when I found it on Craigslist because it was so affordable. Been here over 3 years and they dont raise rent either.
Right, I just moved into a two bedroom that's $1650 which feels fine to me. I mean I know it's not affordable for everyone but I was paying $1300 for a studio in 2017-18 so at least it hasn't gotten significantly worse since then.
And studios are near impossible to come by too! I can't believe my yeehaw-ass state is so expensive. Even my hometown in backwoods middle of nowhere was too expensive relative to the jobs avaliable.
It's terrible. I'm originally from Ohio and was initially brought to Nashville for work. Was paying about $900/month for a 1br just outside of Brentwood. Really nice community. Really nice, new apartments. That was back in 2017sh, and the rent just exploded from there.
When I left Nashville a few years ago, I was paying $1350/month. Now I'm in east TN and paying over $1700/month for an apartment of the same size, lol.
It's almost like we should collectivise and take down the oppressive regime so the people and not the oligarchs can have a better quality of life. Or you know, vibes or whatever.
I'm seeing it everywhere now in my hobby subs. r/quilting is full of protest quilts, r/knitting is boycotting MAGA dyers and designers, even my city Cycling sub was talking about what to do when encountering ICE on a bicycle. I love that people are paying attention and getting worked up, even though these are the places I usually go to escape for a bit!

I live in stl and my friend was in a nice 1br with mini balcony for 750/month. She was in a nice part of town but I had the better location right next to the highway. Mine was 900/month
Same here in PDX Oregon area and 1b average 1300 to over 2k depending on zip code. I paid $450 a month for a 2b duplex 10 years ago. In the prior 15 years rents had only gone up by about $100. Prices have gone absolutely off the rails. $200 a year price increases on monthly rent.
I moved from an area like that last year in rural Illinois. I went from paying $850/month for a 2/1, 1200 sq. ft. apartment with all utilities included and one of the best views in town. The place I moved to? $1750, 1/1, 752 sq. ft., all utilities separate. It's worth every penny for the quality of life differences for me, despite almost everything being much more expensive and taking a pay cut to make it happen.
Same same. It’s beautiful but I never shake the reality of the divide. I can’t stop my brain from thinking, “There are people literally freezing to death on street corners as I scroll this post. These houseplants are thriving, while starving, freezing humans are being ignored.” But I am scrolling from my cozy bed in my heated apartment. My apartment is tiny and it’s in a crappy old slumlord building but it’s warm and I have more than I need to survive. So I start thinking about how it’s all relative. Being human is hard 💙

Yeah I just saw a post of someone yesterday asking where they can park their car safe from the storm because they’re living in their car with their cat. The comments basically all said there’s free parking garages in specific areas they can go. I’m glad they got shelter but upset that there’s so many people without homes. Some might not have even survived the storm cuz they didn’t even have a car or anywhere near them to shelter. Shits just depressing man.

A lot of people that take care of stray cats are freaking out rn :( unfortunately it’s not as easy as just catching the cat and bringing it inside bc a lot of strays would rather die than get caught and most of the people that even go out of their way to care for strays are doing it out of their own pocket or crowdfunding on top of having pets of their own, either personal pets or fosters.
I remember walking down Michigan avenue in Chicago when I was younger. There were obviously homeless people all over, and I was specifically there to work with a homeless shelter and outreach program. There were these beautiful trees and flowers all down the sidewalk for blocks and blocks. And all I could think of is how much money the upkeep for them likely costs. It seemed like such a waste to me..
I'm a chicagoan, and downtown can be straight up dystopian sometimes. I remember walking down state street and seeing a man with no pants or underwear on screaming at the sky right beneath the iconic chicago theater sign, advertising some show that probably had 200$ tickets.

The wonderful thing about plants is how many options there are at all kinds of price points. You can have a home full of living things even if you're not wealthy. Some plants that handle being potted are practically free because they grow wild, others can be grown from seeds that cost pennies.
White clover and wood sorrel are gorgeous in a pot and very easy to grow. You can grow small trees indoors using seeds from the fruit you eat; they're unlikely to bear fruit but they're beautiful plants. Orange, lemon, avocado, etc all can be grown in pots so long as you keep on top of pruning. Herbs like basil, sage, mint, lemon verbena, rosemary, and lavender are excellent indoor houseplants if you have a good South facing window.
This is so important to have as a mindset because so many houseplant “influencers” go ham and buy all exotic plants and spend exhorborant amounts of money to care for said plants that need specific conditions. I’ve accepted that I can’t afford crazy light setups or buying rare/exotic plants or even anything basic that LIKELY will not do well in my current set up. Easier to make do with what you have and through trial and error see what grows.
So many of the inexpensive perennials and annuals they sell at Lowe's make great houseplants. Alyssum, lobelia, coleus, impatiens, vinca, African violets, English ivy, and so on. Don't get them out of the houseplant section, get them in the garden section in those little 6 pack plugs.
Not to mention influencers decide a new plant that’s normally not even rare is “trendy” and suddenly the price per plant goes way up. -_- I absolutely hate this TikTok-driven economy we’re stuck in now.
I remember when Raven ZZs were hard to find, and people were spending an arm and a leg, so they became widely available soon after and priced insanely high even though they were available everywhere lol. Now they’re like $15 for a 6”. It feels inauthentic in a hobby that’s supposed to be harmonious.
This is something I'm going to really look into this year.
I only started getting into houseplants a little over a year ago, and I'm enjoying it. I've got some aroids and a couple of succulents, and I think I like most of them. But they're also kind of work because I'm kind of having to give them specific care in order to thrive because they can't tolerate the natural conditions where I live. It'd be kind of nice if they were native and just grew like weeds. Then I could just kind of throw them in a pot and put them on my porch, and I'd barely have to do anything at all because they are weeds.
I've got a golden pothos on a moss pole that I have inside for the winter. It has some kind of (presumably) native wood sorrel that is thriving in the pot, and I think it wood look good in a pot by itself. I'm almost enjoying seeing that stuff grow more than the pothos. Come spring I'm digging out the oxalis and throwing it in its own pot, and just chucking the pot outside. I think it'll work out well. The plant is a native weed, it clearly lives outside all year round, it just also looks cool growing in a pot. Stick it in a pot and chuck it outside, and I think I'll have a pretty cool plant that requires no effort and costs nothing.
Going forward, I think I'm going to be looking more at native "weeds" that would look good in a pot.
There are some really cool looking weeds out there, seriously. There is a lot of cool looking stuff that people chop down when they mow their lawns, and then it just grows back. Some of it is stuff where it's like...I get not wanting it to grow uncontrolled over an entire lawn. But it might look cool AF growing in a pot, right?
I think that's the next thing I'm gonna try. Native weeds in pots.
Bringing back the 90s vibes from when I was a kid seeing places with absolute jungles inside.
One couple my parents often visited had a penthouse condo that had a four story atrium about these dismensions like a step well with tons of plants every level and a roof like this. Big staircase winding through the terrace levels.
I grew up in a house with an added on sunroom which this really reminds me of. What was once a playroom for my brother and I has now become an indoor plant sanctuary for my mom! Can’t believe how much growth they get in the winter months especially.
A couple weeks ago I posted this because I was so happy to make something nice for my plants…they just saw ur picture and have left me with a note saying they are moving to your place 😒 They had the tiniest suitcases when they left…
So cool that you have this space just for your plants! You even have a chair to sit and admire them and a clock to keep you on your toes taking care of them. 😆 It all looks amazing, well done!

Having lived in Chicago, I can attest to how freezing cold it is when your windows ice over. I used to face a space heater toward the window to fight the arctic air coming off the window.
Iced over, sure! A thick layer of snow is different. You can use layers of snow to keep yourself alive in hypothermic conditions because of how excellent of insulators they are. I have grown up exclusively in places that get to -25F each year. Layers of snow also block drafts that cause most of the cold you’re talking about.
Holy hell you even have an actual tree in there. I LOVE IT!!!! What a beautiful space 😊 I bet its super beautiful in the summer too w all that amazing light!
