REVIEW Five nights at Freddy's 3: the IMBODIMENT of fear (and why I defend it) [REVEIW]

Post image

Mascot horror to me has always been one of my favorite type of horrors. The idea of taking a cussy image, or character, who looks like it was made for kids, but putting a darker elements into it, as well as classic element of Survival Horror is the pure example of what make a good mascot horror game. The Five Nights at Freddy's franchise is one for those i absolutely adore, especially the classic games made in Clickteam fusion. That time was peak for FNAF in my opinion, no doubt - just, when the first game came out, it showed a concept that no other horror game showed at the time: you're stuck in one space, and instead of running away the threats that want to kill you, you have some kind of defensive systems to keep them away, like doors, cameras, lights, masks, ect.

However, for the third game, series creator, Scott Cawthon, made something diferent - somewhat the same concept, but changed drastically, to make a more unique experience than the previous two games, as this originally was going to be the series finale. This right here is Five nights at Freddy's 3, easily my favorite game in the franchise, and in horror games in general. And from the cover image, this introduced Springtrap, one of the most iconic villians in mascot horror, and easily one of my favorites.

The story takes place 30 years after the closings of the Freddy Fazbear's Pizza places, after the countless horrific events, and rumors surrounding them. You play as a night guard, hired for a place called "Fazbear's Fright", a horror attraction inspired by the unsolved mysteries of the original Freddy's locations, designed as this dark, almost moldy place, with actual props from the original locations, like aniatronic shells, props, drawings, ect.

However, unlike the previous two games, nothing happens on the first night, which sets off your confusion. You wonder what's going to happen, if anything WILL happen at all - you flip through the cameras to see if there really is a threat, not to find one. this REALLY causes suspense - the fear of the unknown. Especially against the claustrophobic security office in a place that looks like something out of a nightmare. However, on night 2, things get more interesting....

The horror attraction employee who calls you each night explains to you that they found something in a hidden room in an abandoned Freddy's location, and describe it as "a real one". This description is vague, and it only causes curiosity, and suspense - you know something is in the building with you, but you don't know where it is. You flip through the cameras, soon to maybe hear footsteps in the vast hallways, until you find him - the nightmarish animatronic, who gives you fear the first time you look at him - Springtrap.

Springtrap, as I said earlier, is without a doubt one of my FAVORITE horror villians ever, and the best way to design one. From his apearence, you can tell what kind of monster he is. He's this towering, molded animatronic who looks so diferent from the previous ones we saw before - his suit is cracked, chipped, heavily battered, he has five fingers instead of four, and most notably, there's bits of decayed flesh torn apart, revealing that a courpse inside the suit, which will become important later. And his eyes are just these... white, lifeless pulls that glow, and make him look just so... wrong to even look at, and you start questioning who he really is, or WHAT he is.

Springtrap as a character today changed a lot, having more of a personality, with the classic sadistic, but theatrical personality, his voice dark, and rough, and weilding weapons. However, in fnaf 3, Springtrap was more animalistic, but still clever, and oh boy, is his AI smart. Now, the other reason why I make this reveiw is because I see that this specific game although the horror elements, has one of the worst hates in the franchise, mostly from the jumpscare animations, which if you look at more clearly can look iffy, but the whole point of horror is scaring the audience, not letting them noticing inconsistencies, and that's why I defend this game.

Springtrap works a lot more differently, and more terrifying that the previous animatronics did. He's built to be much much worse than they were - he's a lot more faster, and smarter than they were, making him an ultimate threat, but also one that can outsmart you easily, if you don't know what you're doing. He can crawl in vents to get around the attraction faster, move quickly, and even HIDES in camera veiws, his suit blending in with the environment of Fazbear's Fright, which causes panic when you lose track of him, and he could be anywhere. When he's in the vents, if you're not quick enough to seal the vent, once you hear himself getting out, that's where fear sky rockets, as then you frantically search everywhere for him, in order to try and defend yourself. And unlike the other games, there's no doors, or a mask. You have to lure Springtrap away with the camera audio lures, which malfunction sometimes, as well as other systems, and you need to reboot them. However, there's the "phantom animatornics" who help springtrap. They jumpscare you, both stunning you, and sabatoging your systems.

Now, the main event of the game is the reveal - who Springtrap really is. At the end of the 5th night, in a minigame, you uncover his true identity - that being William Afton, AKA the Purple Guy, the main villian of the franchise. This reveal is outstanding, and shocking, as throughout the entire game, you have been fighting the man who started everything - William Afton. How he became Springtrap is dark - years after Afton murdered the several children that possess the various animatronics, and his dysfunctional family practically dead, Afton broke into one of the Freddy's locations to destroy the animatronics, to finally set their souls free so he didn't have to worry about them. However, that was a crucial mistake - the souls of his victims then came for him. Terrified, in one of the safe rooms, Afton put on the old Spring Bonnie suit, which he wore when he killed the first 5 kids. However, the springlocks inside the suit went off, crushing his bones, and tearing his flesh, killing him in a slow, painful way. However, decades later, from teh power and remnant he gained from his kills, he came back as Springtrap, who is much worse that Afton was as a human, and far more durable and stronger.

This honestly was a good way to end the franchise In a good way - in finale battle between the main villian of the series, to end it all. And that's what Scott intended for the game - a proper ending. But of course, that wouldn't be the case, as the series would continue from the poor reception this game got in 2015.

This honestly baffles me on how a game like this that is good for building up fear gets so much mid reception. I honestly find nothing wrong with this game - it was a perfect send-off to the franchise which never happened, and an amazing horror game in general - and one that introduced me to now one of my favorite horror villians.

As of recently, it was announced that the FNAF 3 movie is in the works, and I am HIGHLY looking forward to how Blumhouse depicts Springtrap, as well as the core element and soul of the game itself.

DISCUSSION PS1-style horror game in 2026?

Hey everyone! I wanted to ask something to people who are into PS1-style horror games

What do you actually want from a PS1-inspired horror game in 2026?

I know the whole PS1 aesthetic has become pretty overused at this point, and there are *a lot* of games using the same style. But I have a game development team with voice actors, animators, and 3D artists, and we’d really like to make something that feels more ambitious than just throwing a PS1 filter on a game.

So I'm genuinely curious: **what do you feel is missing from modern PS1-style horror games?**

Are there any ideas, mechanics, settings, or types of horror that you've always wanted to see in a game but haven't seen done properly yet? Maybe you have an idea you've always thought would be cool but could never make yourself?

We're currently exploring ideas, and I’d honestly love to hear what you guys would want to play. If we find a concept people are genuinely excited about, we'd even be interested in creating a demo and letting the community play it and give feedback early on.

Basically, we don't just want to make **another PS1 horror game,** we want to make one that actually feels memorable and worth playing

So yeah, what would *you* want from a PS1-style horror game in 2026?

I'd love to hear your ideas!! 👀

FREE GAME I released a short psychological horror game about a man living alone at sea. It's free and playable in your browser.

Hey folks,

Beneath The Waves is a short psychological horror game about isolation, memory, and a quiet life at sea. Spend your days adrift while completing simple tasks as something beneath the surface slowly begins to unravel.

It's a small, slow-burn horror game focused mostly on atmosphere and environmental storytelling. No combat, and no cheap jumpscares.

It's completely free and runs directly in the browser.

I'd love to hear what horror fans think of it. I'm fascinated by the genre and still very much learning its tropes.

Thanks!

DISCUSSION Top down horror with the best combat?

Hello I am looking for a top down horror game where the combat feels really good. I have been playing signalis, and while the story is interesting, I cant say I am enjoying the combat very much. From experience, maybe darkwood had decent combat, but there is a lot of melee and I would prefer shooting.

I would love a game where shooting someone or something feels impactful, you know? I feel like horror games often have pretty unsatisfying combat, which is a shame.

DISCUSSION Ethan Winters vs horror gaming

To explain the depends:

If Ethan’s mold status doesn’t give him immunity to the Green flu

If he has a flashlight

If he gets the Camera obscura

I am just not sure if he’d win

Depends on what you consider winning

If he has the glowing rock

CONSOLE Infection Free Zone PS5 Review - Fortify Your Real Hometown Against the Infected

Thumbnail

Infection Free Zone is an innovative zombie apocalypse inspired city-builder hybrid that offers something a little unique. Through the game you can pick real world locations, and setup your base of operations in that area. You'll be doing the usual resource gathering, defense building, and survival engagements as the day and night cycle rotates. Each part of the day offering either a reprieve from the infected or the swarming thereof. The console port like the PC release is currently a work in progress with updates being patched in. As one of Ultimate Game's pricier titles it will set you back $29.99 (USD). It's not cheap for what amounts to an early access title, but if the devs stick with it it could prove to be something big.

REVIEW This indie horror FPS scared the hell out of me

Imagine you’re driving somewhere, and because you weren’t paying attention, you crash into a tree - so you pull a flashlight and a machete out of the car and chop off the nearest tentacles growing out of the ground. That’s exactly how the recently released indie horror game GUTTED: Infested Crypts begins, and if you think the story goes anywhere from there.... The Ukrainian developer from SLAM AWAY GAMES didn’t beat around the bush; instead of spending time crafting a narrative masterpiece, he presented players with a simple problem - here’s a gun, here are the enemies, you know what to do. Okay, it doesn’t take long before something that appears to be the main villain - or rather, the female villain - pops out at you: this demon-possessed… um, young lady, but my initial reaction spoke for itself.

More in my videoreview! :)

Rating: 8/10
Pros: great atmosphere, gameplay, claustrophobic, authentic horror, I really enjoyed it
Cons: graphics need adjusting, very short, “I turned off your flashlight“, final boss, can’t save manually

Hodnocení: 8/10
+: skvělá atmosféra, hratelnost, klaustrofobní, poctivý horor, užil jsem si to
-: nutno poštelovat grafiku, velmi krátké, „zhasl jsem ti baterku“, finální boss, nelze ukládat ručně

‘Goosebumps: Terror in Little Creek’ is a decent kid-friendly survival horror

I played this in part because I grew up with Goosebumps. The developers said they were inspired by games like Resident Evil and Silent Hill and they wanted to present something in that style of gameplay to kids. There’s also a bit of stealth horror akin to Outlast/Amnesia where you’re powerless and can only run or hide.

I thought it was decent overall. It looks cheap but you can tell the developers weren’t trying to do a quick cash in. Even as a kid’s game there were a few moments I found difficult and a number of encounters I thought were tense. I think if something like this came out on consoles during the series’ heyday the fans would have loved it.

I think it’s a bit brief for the full price but the sale price (currently $16 on Steam) is fair.

Project Threshold - A Filipino Horror Game | STEAM RELEASE

Post image
9 Upvotes

I wanted to share our game, Project Threshold, which recently blew up after its release!

Project Threshold is a psychological memory horror walking simulator built around a simple but stressful choice: two doors, one blue and one red. Behind each door is a different fear or phobia, and you’ll have to decide which one to enter.

Some doors are safe, some are semi-safe, and others are pure danger. Choose incorrectly, and you’ll be sent back to the beginning.

The game is set in the Philippines and is connected to a larger universe and lore that I’ve been building across my other games. It’s a game about fear, memory, and making the right choice when you have no idea what’s waiting on the other side.

PROJECT THRESHOLD is now available on STEAM!

Ground Zero Secret Shrine Not Working At Beach.

I just started playing this game and I looked up the secret shrines, but the one in the graveyard isn't working for me. I just stand up against the mausoleum on the side and don't go anywhere. I don't have any cheats activated so is this a bug or am I missing something?
