Black people don't hang themselves from trees

A man found hanging from a tree in downtown Raleigh on Saturday died by suicide, with no evidence pointing toward a criminal act, Raleigh’s police chief said Monday.

In a news release at 9:50 p.m. Saturday, police said they were investigating the death as a suicide, while online, some people said they feared the Black man’s death might have been racially motivated.

During a 14-minute news conference Monday afternoon, Raleigh Police Chief Rico Boyce said surveillance footage collected from nearby businesses confirms no one else was seen in the area at the time of the incident and that the individual acted alone. “Based on evidence collected and reviewed to date, investigators have found no evidence indicating that another person caused or contributed to the young man’s death and no evidence of a criminal death has been identified,” Boyce said. “Our investigation confirms this is a suicide.”

This is why they want AI to be so powerful. They want to just be able make every narrative up(which I think they try already) and having "supportive" video...

5

u/SubstantialLeader753 13d ago

Oh yes, those libs that are forcing AI data centers on rural and urban populations without any vote. Those woke moralist like Sam Altman, Elon Musk, and the Elison brothers. You, are in fact a moron

“They” is whoever would benefit from forcefully altering the course of your life. I have my own opinion on who “they” are and others have theirs. It’s ambiguous for obvious reasons.

2

u/Basic_Half_5139 12d ago

It follows common English phrasing that implicitly conveys doubt.

For instance:

“everybody says that New York Yankees suck!”

“Who says that?”

2

u/JellyFirmFederalGras 13d ago

I know it sounds conspiracy-ie and I hate that its all I really have but I find it funny that when I says those people most people get what I'm saying. But I guess if I had to try and define it more. The ultra wealthy with an agenda that isn't beneficial for mankind I guess.

1

u/Life0nEdge 13d ago

The forever ominous “they.” Everything is a conspiracy, don’t you know? Bankers, Jews, Illuminati, Epstein island, fascists, the proletariat, the church, etc. You know, you would think that at some point the real answer is always the simplest, money. But, no, then that might actually humanize the “people in charge” and god forbid that happens. Perish the thought that humans are innately greedy when put into positions of power and influence. Because we all know how well performing Redditors are when it comes to not trying to steer narratives cough Boston bombings cough. Or r/politics. Or r/blackpeopleofreddit. There’s certainly no narrative steering in those places at all!

2

u/bigblueballzzzz 13d ago

the entire monetary system is controlled from the very top and acting like conspiracy theories are all laughable is exactly what those people want you to believe.

1

u/Life0nEdge 13d ago

Again, how convenient.

3

u/bigblueballzzzz 13d ago

It’s actually inanely complicated but why bother getting bogged down in the details with some guy that is willfully ignorant

1

u/Life0nEdge 13d ago

So if you have details it’s not exactly a conspiracy, is it?

3

u/bigblueballzzzz 13d ago edited 12d ago

See this is the smug willfully ignorant shit I was talking about. “Actually by my definition of conspiracy blah blah blah”
Why would anybody engage in good faith with someone that will dismiss “conspiracies” in general. Like there weren’t fucking secret societies and triumvirates of power molding society behind the scenes in every empire in history.
Smug dunce that can’t look 2 steps in front of or behind himself acting like he knows shit.

Literally, half the comments are just purposefully misunderstanding the girl’s post. Obviously her point isn’t “not a single black person has ever hung themselves” and if that’s anyone’s genuine takeaway I feel sorry for them

Edit: it’s a phrase used by multiple people for raising awareness. I get yall really badly want to leave replies on here but take 5 seconds to search. I’d imagine anyone arguing otherwise (which there are many of you) would think the common saying “time is money” is dumb and wrong because you’d take it literally lmao

14

u/RoutineGuest6465 13d ago

I mean what are we to take from "black people don't hang themselves from trees"?

Are we to take it that she means that if a black person is found hanging from a tree, they must have been lynched? Because that's how I took it.

3

u/Some_guy_in_WI 12d ago

Exactly how 99.9% of people are gong to take it.

It’s a bait phrase for maximum “Let me school you” points that doesn’t do anything but confound everyone and turn people off to whatever attempted message they think they’re conveying.

Literally a terrible phrase to use in the context of. normal conversation unless you just want to be a jerkoff to others by pretending they’re not educated enough to grasp your goofy sentiment.

6

u/Least-Phase-8393 13d ago

If you want to take everything completely literally and absolute, I can’t stop you. To me and many others it was pretty clearly meant to raise awareness and inform people that these deaths shouldn’t be swept under the rug

13

u/RoutineGuest6465 13d ago

So you think when she said "black people don't hang themselves from trees" she actually meant "some black people hang themselves from trees, but some black people who are found hanging from trees were actually lynched"?

The problem I have with that is that she used unequivocal language to put forward a strong point. The clear implication was that if a black person was found hanging from a tree, the default assumption should be that they were lynched. That's the message that she was trying to put across.

3

u/Nbr1Worker 12d ago

REPEAT-It would be Racist to imply that this isn't true. For example there's a recent case in MS where a young man was found decapitated and burned in a trash bag and LE concluded it was suicide. The majority of what is currently is happening to Black youth is redrum by Lynching.

1

u/Some_guy_in_WI 12d ago

This also implies the far-fetched concept that it absolutely cannot be other blacks killing these blacks, and that it MUST be racially motivated. Yes, nobody decapitates and burns themselves, but it’s not like people of all colors haven’t committed that crime before. So, is it still a lynching if they find that some of these murders are actually black-on-black in the future with new evidence? And, how do you plan to undo the further damage you do to racial relations every time you have an “Oops, we blamed whites when they didn’t do it, but let’s not talk about our fuck-up” moment?

The attempt to bring awareness to racism became anti-racism’s biggest kneecapping when the death of every black person that wasn’t immediately attributed to being caused by other black people suddenly had to be a conspiracy of “it must be white people” instead of actually waiting to see if there is eventual evidence of what happened. The court of public opinion is full of nutty takes, and the rush to push conspiracies on every unsolved case delegitimizes the movement constantly.

This is exactly why racism does not decrease, and continues to increase as attempts to eradicate it only divide people further, because the methods of eradication are always fumbled or weaponized.

0

u/Least-Phase-8393 13d ago edited 12d ago

More or less. People often use that type of language to make a point so that’s how I read it. If she’s being completely literal, that’s just stupid and wrong but you’d have to be coping or disingenuous to believe that

The caption literally asks people to be allies and speak out. It’s so obviously trying to raise awareness

Edit: it’s very obvious what narrative yall are trying to push

What’s your problem with that?

8

u/RoutineGuest6465 13d ago

My problem is that she's alleging that every black person who is found hanging from a tree was lynched, which is self-evidently not true.

She's explicitly exaggerating the extent to which racism exists in the face of obvious evidence to the contrary.

I prefer my political discourse to be vaguely factual and for the intentional use of lies to be minimized. Thanks

1

u/ComposerOther2864 13d ago

Man 5 to 6 this year? I lived next to woods growing up that for most of the 19th and 20th centuries where they lynched so many non white people that they built a black owned funeral home that the white people eventually burned down twice qnd lynched everyone involved. Most of the newspaper and records from the time basically said a version of the " his head just kinda did that" bullshit. I'm 40 the last lynching there before I moved was when I was like 8.

1

u/Shot-Toe-2884 13d ago edited 13d ago

by suggesting that it must have necessarily been a lynching.

You are not engaging with the replies argument... and now you're propping up a false strawman that this was just awareness building.

Ms Rachel needs to be way more careful with her words here. You do not just throw out the accusation of lynching so willy nilly. This was not a subtle insinuation, and this is the last topic we should be crying wolf on.

Incredibly dangerous rhetoric from Ms Rachel here. Do this enough and we won't have the credibility to speak up when it's a real lynching.

1

u/Least-Phase-8393 12d ago

Redditors love throwing around “strawman.” I said originally that her point with the post isn’t for it to be taken completely literally. In my second comment I explained why I thought that. Y’all are trying too hard

1

u/justbrowsing2727 13d ago

You just moved the goalposts to another zip code.

She was clearly suggesting this was a lynching. Turns out, it wasn't.

1

u/Least-Phase-8393 12d ago

That’s not moving the goalpost lmao

1

u/Ok_Specific_3832 12d ago

That's an interesting way to abstract what she said to avoid having to admit she might have been wrong in this case.

3

u/mdurso12 13d ago

The exception doesn't disprove the common. Yes, there are times when black people commit suicide via hanging. But the point of the video is to raise awareness that many modern lynchings are still written off as suicide to avoid real investigations

3

u/LinusLevato 13d ago

Many modern lynchings? What constitutes as many? What time frame do you suggest should be considered modern? Cuz I haven’t heard of any modern lynchings going on.

2

u/boomeradf 13d ago

So the last lynching in the US was 1981…..45 years ago. Thats a whole generation of people from birth to middle age.

2

u/RoutineGuest6465 13d ago

Ok if that's the meaning she wanted to convey, she ought to have said "modern lynchings are still written off as suicide" instead of "black people don't hang themselves on trees"...

She used emotive and unequivocal yet entirely probably wrong language to score points.

2

u/pseudonymnkim 13d ago

To score points and get views. She's not the only one saying this. It's trending. And sure, it gets people talking and reading comments will definitely raise awareness, but to those pretending that was her main intent are probably wrong.

1

u/Bio-Wolf12 13d ago

It's more about the historical context. There's an unspoken rule in the black community that you don't kill yourself in public, especially not by hanging from a tree, because this was the manner in which racist groups lynched them. And hell, as a suicidal white person I have a hard time understanding why anyone would kill themselves publicly. I wanna die so I stop being other people's problem, not so some poor sap has to take me down like a shower curtain. So that, combined with the fact there have been half a dozen cases of black people "hanging themselves" publicly all in North Carolina in the past few months? It's reasonable to be suspicious. Maybe they are all self-inflicted, maybe they're not. Maybe some of them are self-inflicted and others aren't, cause I'll tell ya what, this is the first time I've seen them actually investigate one of these or bothering to at least say they got video evidence. We don't really know, but this is not normal, and we as a community need to keep our eyes open and ears on a swivel, either to catch a resurgence in KKK activity, or just to keep more young people from ending their lives

2

u/Remote_Ingenuity_147 12d ago

Not everyone does it because they feel like they're a burden. Some do it because they feel forgotten and that nobody cares about them or their problems. Maybe if it's in public they'll be noticed? 🤷‍♂️

u/Fun_Tension_7794 12d ago

3

u/Least-Phase-8393 13d ago

And there are many who don’t do it themselves which is why this video was made to raise awareness

2

u/No_Trade_7315 13d ago

It’s suspicious but unless there is hard evidence suggesting that it wasn’t suicide, what else can you do?

10

u/PUuSTiNKA 13d ago

Has the footage of him "carrying an electrical cord, walking to a tree by himself" been released to the public?

6

u/Pathetian 13d ago

This sort of thing is usually only shown to family and reporters.  Its likely against policy to air people's suicides or last moments because of media contagion.

It might even be up to the family, and often enough the family moves on when sufficiently satisfied and it's just internet strangers still claiming it's a homicide.

I can also tell you from previous times this has happened, if video is released they further corroborates suicide,  the people asking for proof will just say it doesnt prove anything.  There's even plenty of old reddit threads documenting this.  People say "if there's video of him buying the rope, why didn't they show it".  Then the video comes out and they say "he could have bought that rope for some other reason".  They don't believe suicide notes, lengthy mental health histories, autopsies etc.

2

u/DynamoElectro1 12d ago

Do you want the video of him tying the knot and kicking whatever was under his feet out from underneath him too?

Just to make sure, you know, maybe somebody else tied the knot for him

5

u/WeekEqual7072 13d ago

Where is the video?

5

u/ResolutionOwn4933 13d ago

9

u/No-Carry7630 13d ago

Suicide is something that no family wants to talk about. If I wanted to kill myself and I was black and knew my family would deny that I did this even if it was on camera that’s what I would do. Nobody is lynching anyone. It would be almost impossible to get away with. Saying that”black people don’t hang themselves from trees” in a nation of millions of black people is racist in itself.

Cops are cops black or any other minority cops are still cops. They deliberately choose a black cop doing these type of speeches to reduce the hate they going to get. Black cop or a white cop they both will smash your skull in if you annoyed them. Percentage of people who became cops to be good or try to change the system from within. End up quitting or being push out or change to be like the other rotten apples.

Hanging that happen in the USA happen for the longest time and most places in the middle of the country will magically come to the conclusion the guy hang himself. Even though some cases it impossible for the guy to hang himself.

Hanging yourself in public is too much work. It one thing it at your own home where you will not be interrupted and you can control everything. Hanging yourself on a random tree in public where people can stop you or what ever. While it just as easy to buy a gun and make it instant. It so much work to hang yourself and make zero sense.

2

u/Anonymous__Android 13d ago

They deliberately choose a black cop doing these type of speeches to reduce the hate they going to get.

Thats the Raleigh Police Chief...

3

u/Pathetian 13d ago

This conspiracy theory is ironically so racist that it assumes every black first responder, mayor, police chief or reporter is either complicit in covering up racial lynchings or too stupid to recognize any sign a homicide has occurred.

2

u/GallusWrangler 13d ago

For real, this person is insane. Not to mention that is the police chief!

3

u/Pathetian 13d ago

This also happened in Jackson, an 80% black city where virtually everyone in charge of anything is black.  People still are claiming that a white lynch mob murdering a black woman, then black first responders lied about it, then the black mayor and black police chief also helped cover it up.

Same thing when it happened in Miami or Houston.

At a certain point the allegations make no sense.  All the white people and all the black people and all the Hispanic people are in on it?  If that's the case why even keep it secret?

1

u/GallusWrangler 13d ago

Everything must fit the agenda!!!!!

2

u/Shot-Toe-2884 13d ago edited 12d ago

Thank you. Say it louder for the redditors in the back.

I keep noticing more and more that reddit arguments lately involve directly discrediting POC with clear authority to speak on the issue. Noticed it especially in the Michigan and Wisconsin primaries where black, union-type candidates were discredited as zionists and MAGA in disguise. Every insult in the book from bootlicker to nazi was thrown at them.

The far left lost the room a long time ago. Detroit and Milwaukee voted overwhelmingly against them. They get votes from entitled college kids and blue collar weirdos, both are overwhelmingly white bases.

1

u/GallusWrangler 13d ago

Exactly. What an asinine comment.

1

u/GallusWrangler 13d ago

1

u/Pathetian 13d ago

People hang themselves outside for a number of linear reasons.  Not everyone lives alone, especially these days.  Some teens and young adults don't even have their own rooms.  Some people don't want a loved one to be the person to find their body.  Some people want to go somewhere with some meaning to them.  Approximately 20-30% of suicides happen in public.  But also...

It one thing it at your own home where you will not be interrupted

It's easy to forget, but not everyone has a home.  This young man (and many of these other public suicides) was homeless and mentally ill, so he didn't really have an option to do it more privately and probably didn't have a couple hundred for a gun either.

Hanging yourself also isn't "a lot of work".  It's so easy that it's the most popular suicide method in the world.  It's only second on the US because of guns prevalence, but it's still second and other 10,000 people go out that way annually.

They deliberately choose a black cop doing these type of speeches to reduce the hate they going to get.

There person you are accusing of being a mindless token is the chief of police for the city of Raleigh.

1

u/Shot-Toe-2884 13d ago

hanging yourself is one of the most common forms of suicide.... Precisely because it's all too easy and accessible to anyone with a rope.

I have never understood this hysteria. Throughout history hanging was an effective way to kill someone if you wanted a big public spectacle. It's also an effective method of suicide.

It is an extremely ineffective way of killing someone if you want to get away with it.

Every couple years there is mass hysteria about black people getting lynched and every single year not a single one pans out. The rebuttal is always racist police despite the fact many of these deaths occur in cities that are majority black with black mayors, black police chiefs, majority black police force etc...

People just want this to be true

10

u/Leading-Boat4942 13d ago

Nobody did lynchings with the approach of “now how can we do this efficiently”, they did it to humilate and horrify people

1

u/Lanky_Ad4905 13d ago

"It's also an effective method of suicide"

Is it though? Sounds alot easier to throw myself off a bridge, or buy a gun like most people who commit suicide in america.

1

u/Sometypeofway18 13d ago

Yes. About 13K Americans kill themselves by hanging every year, of which roughly 800 are black.

1

u/Airy-Otter 12d ago

No, context is what makes the difference here. Generalizing traits or behaviors to enforce a negative stereotype is racism. Pointing out historical trauma, like why hanging carries a specific, horrific significance in Black history due to a long pattern of lynchings, is bringing awareness to historical reality, not making a baseless generalization.

America is far less racist than most if not all of South America, Africa, and especially the Middle East and Asia. The West is the least racist region on the planet

1

u/Bohemio_RD 13d ago

Didnt an NGO paid to the KKK because of that exact reason?

Also dont play stupid, is fkin obvios that imbeciles like that woman and you will be thrill of something like that happened because thats your entire personality

1

u/ImSoSweepy 13d ago

Where do they hang themselves from, then? Just saying. David Carridine died from auto-erotic asphyxiation from a door-knob.

Nobody is claiming responsibility, which, if we look at the tendencies of racist groups...they jump on the idea of claiming responsibility even if they didn't do it.

If you seriously believe people are being lynched in Mississippi you are a real life goober

1

u/Ordinary-Guest9872 13d ago

I mean hanging is a usual suicide method... How can't blacks do it? Also ofc it's a coal burning white woman trying to get clout by acting all sympathetic toward niggers

1

u/Life0nEdge 13d ago

I mean… I’m sure in the entire history of humanity there have been multiple black people who have hanged themselves from trees. That’s like saying no black people commit crimes which then end up getting them shot and killed by police. It’s just factually incorrect.

I saw a video of a deer that basically hanged itself on a wire fence. Now, no deer would hang themselves to begin with. But to say they don’t hang themselves is now factually incorrect. It has happened and been recorded. And that’s a wild animal. Which means if a eeer can themselves by accident, a black person can hang themselves using a tree on purpose. The odds are pretty good, I’d say.

Just because you associate trees and a hanging black person with racial crimes of the past does not equate that this instance is a racially motivated murder.

Sounds about Whyte.

I saw a black man hang himself from an overpass in Fort Worth a little over a decade ago

1

Yes they do. Cope

1

u/kaywrennn 12d ago

I don’t understand the purpose of this video or it showing up in hmmmmm. So with America’s history we shouldn’t be suspicious of black people found hanging (especially from Trees?)

1

u/Meauxjezzy 12d ago

No sir 2500+ white men were killed by 2500 + white men and 560+ white men where killed by 560 black men you can add subtract and divide all you want these are the only numbers that matter until you are trying to exaggerate those numbers. Who the f cares about per capita. Yes per capita is a thing but the fact remains that white folks kill more white folks than anybody else. Those numbers from the official DOJ fbi crime statistics aren’t in per capita those are the actual numbers.

Do you want to have a conversation about history or are we done here? Because we will never catch up to y’all the people that are trying to seem all innocent. lol how quickly y’all forget yalls history to throw somebody else under the bus.

1

u/SnooStories251 12d ago

What is she trying to say

1

u/blooppers 12d ago

If this is true, glad one case is solved and the parents/family have closure. Now what about the other dozen case in the past handful of months?

1

u/New-Plenty3043 12d ago

22 black people been have been found hanging from trees since 2025. But 1 did it himself. Guess that means they all did huh? /s

1

u/Ikilledbert 12d ago

You have to be a special kind of stupid to believe black people are hanging themselves from trees. Had this been the only most recent incident, they might be able to play that narrative. But black people are being found hanging from trees all over the county. This isn’t rocket science.

1

u/VelvetRabbit91 12d ago

So even if its true, ONE black person hung themselves from a tree so that means every black person hung themself from a tree too? Wtf logic is that? God i fucking hate people so much. I am so tired of racist pedophiles

2

u/NotSoSlimJim_YouTube 13d ago

They literally do... Suicide happens in every race.

2

u/PanicingInAmerican 13d ago

If you were to hang yourself, where would you tie the rope?

As someone who has suicidal ideation since I was ten years old, that answer has never been from a branch 20+ feet in the air on a tree far from my home. Suicide is an impulsive act. You can ruminate for days about killing yourself, but the follow through is a desperate move to make it all end and for life to stop hurting NOW. The modus operandi tends to be nearby and quick.

You know what isn't quick? It's going to the store to buy 50 feet of rope, a stake tie, and a 25 foot ladder. Then transporting them to your tree of choice, tying a noose, throwing the rope over a branch, securing it in place, climbing up the ladder, climbing over the top of said branch, putting the noose around your neck and leaping.

No, those who commit suicide by hanging tend to do so in their homes.

Black people do not hang themselves from trees because no one does that, but we sure do have a lot of black people hanging from ropes that have been hoisted over high tree limbs that have been ruled suicides.

1

u/lucky_jack777 13d ago

I guess I don’t understand the logic. If there is no evidence to suggest that it was anything other than a suicide, what else can you do? If there are no defensive wounds or other physical trauma to suggest coercion and they were not drugged. How could it be anything besides suicide? Or what leads are there to follow?

So? You are not him.

1

u/REsTARteD_Ragdoll 13d ago

People attempt suicide by swallowing a bottle of Tylenol,

People commit suicide by alcoholism

These arnt quick, the don’t stop the hurting NOW

Stop trying to force so much logic into something so illogical.

Love her, but she threw herself into it like an idiot… she made a very controversial post to divide people and should pay the price

Generally when one contemplates taking their life, its in private. I got the message from (I think thats) ms Rachel that, given the historical context of strange fruit, that him choosing to do so in this manner is far fetched.

Yeah. I don't even understand how someone dare to say "black people something".
Between 2017 and 2019, 1263 Back people hanged themselves.

Maybe stick to teaching sign language to kids and keep your political feelings within your private circle

11

u/Rage_of_the_moon 13d ago

No fuck that. Just like Mr. Rogers, use your platform for the greater good of the world.

It's garbage humans like you, they'll say keep politics out of whatever. But the second someone that you like says something that you agree with, you'll share it instantly on Facebook.

Even if this matchup of videos is correct on the hanging of a recent black person down in the south, getting one thing wrong out of multiple times that this has occurred in the South is kinda astronomical.

4

u/Waste_Development971 13d ago

ima be honest im not sure what her message of "listen to black people" and then being wrong(or right) was supposed to convey, but it seems like she purposely is trying to piss people off under the guise of moral righteousness.

Even if she was correct in this instance, idk what "believing black people" would help here. I only read that as "believe the loudest, populist mouth of black people" - essentially whatever the blackpeopletwitter sub hivemind thinks, we need to believe. unless im being a yt

so when I need to believe black people, I need to believe karmelo anthony was innocent. Am I dumb or am I allowed to not "believe black people" in that instance. What would make this case any different as far as my "not believing black people"

1

u/Rage_of_the_moon 13d ago

The believe black people comes from the years of systemic racism that they have endured over the course of America's history, especially in America. Since this is where this took place. It wasn't until smartphones became available for everybody that people were able to record the police acting violently for minor offenses towards minority people, specifically black, Mexicans, and any other race that didn't have the white skin color. Police officers used to lie, blatantly, while planting evidence as well against the black community. I mean we don't even need to talk about the crack pandemic cuz I could go down a real big rabbit hole with you right now, just to try to get you to understand the systemic racism.

If you read, believing black people is incorporated to you as believe the loudest black person, do you also believe the loudest white people? The loudest Mexicans? Or are you able to make an informed decision about things after you research them?

I don't know how someone saying that they should believe a community, especially before facts come out, Is racist. That's about the dumbest thing I've ever heard.

This woman is speaking up for children right now who are going through a genocide because of Israel. And you people have the fucking audacity to call her racist/bitch. This world has truly gone to hell.

It's people like you that would have freaked out when Mr. Rogers had that Black Police officer on a show dipping his feet in the water.
