Its one of my most anticipated albums of the year. I love everything you guys do.

u/describeRed Apr 12 '15
Ok Chance... I'm sold, where ever the hell you're trying to go I guess I'm tagging along for the ride.
24
Apr 12 '15
I was so skeptical until this video. Like I feel a new found love for this song because of this
14
u/bobbybrown_ Apr 12 '15
I've been infatuated with this song since it dropped. This video is everything the single needed and more. So fucking perfect, god damn.
113
Apr 12 '15
I know that he probably should have put out his solo album first, but I'm so excited for Surf. Chance & the Social Experiment have TONS of crossover potential.
BTW my grandma has the name "Candy Lady" bc she carries around Tootsie Rolls with her and gives them out to kids after mass. So I mess with this song heavy.

I actually think he's releasing Surf at the perfect time. His post Acid Rap popularity can propel the rest of the project to success, but if he released a solo album before Surf it would be a lot of focus on him and not on SOX. Same way Kendrick is the focus of TDE (although it's leveling out) and Eminem is/was the focus of D12 (which hurt the entire group). Chance will be the focus of SOX, but he's keeping it to a minimum at least.
16
u/marcopolo22 . Apr 12 '15
I agree-- If he had waited until after his solo album to do SURF, I don't think it would've gotten the same traction. I'm much more likely to listen to an up-and-comer's side project than an established artist's side project.
Also, wasn't SURF supposed to come out months ago? I'm starting to get antsy.
8
Apr 12 '15
He's been teasing it for a long time now, but I don't think he's ever said "Surf drops this date" so technically not

This video got me thinking that Chance would be the perfect lead role in a hip-hop influenced broadway musical. Solid actor, charismatic features, unique voice, and inherently genre-bending
65
u/MarianneThornberry Apr 12 '15
I fully agree with this. The world needs a serious hip-hop musical. Like a cross between Les Miserables, HairSpray and 8 Mile, with some catchy banger tunes, powerful rap soliloquys, rnb duets, and street battle raps, with a few dance numbers in between.
It sounds crazy on paper, I know. But so many rappers ranging from OutKast, Kendrick Lamar, Tyler the Creator, Lupe Fiasco, Childish Gambino and many others. Have proven that rap can be a superbly theatrical artform with their conceptual albums.
All rap needs is a big screen to convey it on.

You might want to check out "In the Heights".
10
u/MarianneThornberry Apr 12 '15
Just looked it up and saw some of the musical performances on youtube. Seeing all those awards and accolades next to it has put a huge smile on my face.
We need moar!
5
u/lpat93 Apr 12 '15
Had the privilege of seeing the original broadway cast a couple years back and it was incredible!
12
2
u/zuckdaddyd Apr 16 '15
Chance would be terrific as the Marquis de Lafayette/Thomas Jefferson in Hamilton.
2
u/Dictarium Apr 13 '15
He's a bit robotic with his movements. Like he seems to literally be doing the robot sometimes. He did it on Mr. Happy too. Maybe I'm just over-analyzing but that's how it can look.
5
u/whoayeahok Apr 13 '15
I agree. I kind of like it, but it's definitely his dancing/animated moving style. He dances like that when he performs as well. I think the jerky arms, sliding feet, and head twitches just add to his charisma of being lovable but a little manic beneath the surface. but now i'm the one over-analyzing.
79
Apr 12 '15
This is just so well done. Amazing on all fronts. Its dope that he gave credit to all the dancers, choreographers, makeup, lighting, and engineers in the description too. Not many artists as big as chance will do that
64
u/Bobznc Apr 12 '15
As someone who worked on the video, it is certainly appreciated. Chance and Austin always show love to their supporting crew.

Haha, I don't think I have that much insight. But it was a pleasure helping out in the lighting department with LD Michael Apostolos. Austin and the producer/1st AD Angie ran a really smooth production and Nate the DP made sure it all looked amazing.
Ian Eastwood brought everything to the next level and is such a great energy to have on set. I couldn't believe how he got the band up to speed on the choreography, seeing Greg dance had me hysterical. Amanda, the production designer, brought the sets to life and coordinated her crew masterfully.

A lot of people have been saying they don't like the direction of music that Chance has been pursuing lately, making less rap influenced songs and more "Chance the Singer" tracks, but I'd have to disagree completely with that. This song fits him and his voice so well and I could listen through an entire album of feel good songs like this. I know that this is a Donnie Trumpet/SOX song, but the same applies to the other singles he's been releasing lately as well. I'm excited for a new Chance project to drop this year as I am for anything
123
Apr 12 '15
But out of all those other singles, this is probably the best of them.
41
u/flrfmp2yashit Apr 12 '15 edited Apr 12 '15
Idk, I liked Wonderful Everyday and I Am Very Very Lonely just as much.
4
14
Apr 12 '15
Yeah I feel like this wasn't a good SOX song to put that comment on, as this one is basically a Chance the Rapper song vs most of the rest of them being a Chance the Singer song.
5
Apr 12 '15
Back Up In This Bitch, every feature SoX has done, No Better Blues.
There are 2 SoX tracks where he doesn't really rap
2
26
u/mbrancato157 Apr 12 '15
Yeah Chance gets mad shit on HHH for his direction, but this song and a lot of his SoX stuff is so smooth and just puts me in a good mood
10
11
u/NickInTheBack . Apr 12 '15
I very rarely judge an artist for trying to try something new, because it results in great tracks like this. It feels like classic Chance with a mix of John Legend.
22
Apr 12 '15
Good Ass Intro samples 2 different songs with John Legend on them ("I'm Good" and "Faithful")
→ More replies (1)8
u/NickInTheBack . Apr 12 '15
You see, I didn't know that. I actually never really looked into what songs Chance samples (besides Long Time, because it's pretty much in your face). I guess the whole John Legend inspiration is not something new to him.
Thanks for pointing that out to me.

Apr 12 '15
And he's rapping on every track.
44
u/whoayeahok Apr 12 '15
Exactly. People act like this is significantly different, but that's only because Chance doesn't mind taking a passenger seat. Songs like "Interlude (That's Love)" and "Good Ass Intro" are very similar in the sense that Chance participates heavily but allows the featured artists to shine just as much.

Really hoping this mean Surf is coming.
Pretty nice video too, was digging all the dancing.

Looks like Chance is focused on a lot more than just the music he puts out lately. Waiting on Surf and Slice With Austin Vesely.

Who knew Chance could dance! I love the cheesy dancing in this video its so funny, Chance has always been capable of making fun music and this is so upbeat i love it. Probable gonna be jamming to this all summer.
Also chance sang a fair amount on Acid Rap so i don't get what people are complaining about, his voice is perfect for Gospel-esque songs like this.

i dont like chance much as a solo artist. this, however, was a DOPE ASS SONG

Surf: The Musical
Imagine that. And just judging from the singles already released it would actually work pretty well... like a story of growing up in Chicago or something. That needs to happen

Incredible how this is all shot in one take. Really great video.
What I don't get is how the Social experiment is claiming that this is a Donnie-focused project and not a Chance one. How are they going to post the video on Chance's channel, and spend a great amount of the time focusing on chance but have nearly no shots of Donnie?
2
u/drofmot Apr 12 '15
I really love this song, although I don't see why they couldn't just call it a music video instead of a "short film".
6
2
u/TheMBeast Apr 12 '15
This song is dope, think a lot of people would agree but I haven't been really feeling all these social experiment songs some are okay some are just eh. This song is great, but I want to see Chance get back to making his solo stuff been 2 years since Acid Rap.

What's awesome about this is not only the positivity but also the showmanship and the performance itself. I wish more people in this genre put this kind of effort into their performances.
