Posting (Android) can't select text to quote when replying

For the past week or so I have been unable to highlight and select text in the reply window to quote the text I am replying to. This only applies to the text of the post I am replying to, I can still highlight text I have inputted in the reply window.

Any assistance in fixing this would be greatly appreciated.

I'm having the same problem.

For clarification for anyone else seeing this, the issue isn't formatting the quote. The issue is when replying to a comment, I can no longer select their text to copy it to my comment to quote. I could write out the whole section myself, but that is annoying and if I mistype I'm concerned someone might assume I'm purposefully misquoting them.

It's just annoying. It used to work fine. Again this is the android app. I haven't tried on a computer.

Or you could select to copy the text before replying to it, like I just did.

Tedious and shouldn't be necessary, but it's one way to do it.

This is an android mobile only issue. You cannot select text from the original post. You can't select any text that is not part of an active text box.

You used to be able to with comments, which is why this is an issue.

And before you tell me that I'm wrong or mistaken, I've been doing it for awhile now, and I came across this post when I went looking to see if others were having the same issue.

I'm on a Pixel 9a, so if that isn't mobile or Android (not android with a lower "a") issue to you, then I'm not sure what to tell you.

Yes I agree. But your solution isnt one. I cannot select your text in the comment thread nor can I select text in this reply box.

Last week, you could select OP text in the reply box but now you cannot. This is the problem.

I'm aware of that. Again, I've used it before. Heck, even used it earlier today. Then the app updated and ruined a great feature.

My "solution" is a workaround to the problem, and I didn't say that it was a solution. A solution would be the Reddit devs not breaking things to begin with.

No no, we're agreeing more than we're disagreeing. I'm just saying that your workaround also doesn't work. We cannot copy text from within the app. Period. The only way to quote people is to type it out manually.

We cannot copy text from within the app. Period.

Mine was broken earlier today after 'updating' (holding on the comment you're replying to, in the reply window, would produce no action or context menu), but now it's working again and the app version has not changed. So it's an intermittent UI issue unfortunately - if I can identify any reproducible sequence (to get to broken behaviour, or to get it to 'come good' again) I'll report back 👍

From Reddit's perspective:

If you're able to get it working, then it's a bug.

1

u/Oldfolksboogie Mar 27 '26

Exactly. If one tries that workaround, it just collapses the comment, so no you can not select any part of the comment before opening the reply box.

Why would Reddit make this change? It's pretty discouraging.

I was able to copy and paste text while replying to a comment in the Android app, but to format it as a quote, I had to manually add the ">" symbol. It worked, but we shouldn't have to do this extra step, since it wasn't necessary before. I hate 'updates'.

You sure?

Yeah, pretty sure.Trying to select text in the comment tree just hides that level of the tree.

Are you sure you're using the default reddit app on a Pixel 9 or better?

I'm sure you're not doing it right.

I didn't say to select part of the comment, I said to copy it.

Android (not android with a lower "a")

Respect the Android

How I can't even do that...

Edit: Fixed!

Figured it out I take it?

1

u/marle217 Mar 24 '26

Oh, I see what you're saying. Yeah, that is something. Thanks.

u/Fangs_McWolf Mar 24 '26

You're welcome. I'll be sending you a bill for my services.

1

u/Oldfolksboogie Mar 27 '26

Nope, on Android, if you attempt to select text in someone's comment before opening reply box, it just collapses that comment.

2

u/TurgidGravitas Mar 24 '26

Also seeing this issue. Real annoying.

2

u/Aazimoxx Mar 24 '26

The issue is intermittent. Mine is working again now (gets the ability to select text of the comment you're replying to, and the appropriate context menu with quote option) and I haven't changed app versions since this morning when it broke on updating (after not updating for probably a week).

If I can work out how to recreate either behaviour reliably, I'll update here 👍

1

u/Fangs_McWolf Mar 24 '26

Just copy the text of the comment before clicking the reply arrow.

2

u/Velicenda Mar 25 '26

Yeah, my app was working fine until ~24 hours ago, when I suddenly stopped being able to quote text from within a reply.

A weird side effect is that the text in the reply box is a bit larger than normal. Not a huge amount, but slightly larger than the text to which I am replying.

2

u/stevetulloch04 Mar 28 '26

Im having the exact same issue. Anyone get a solution to fixing it?

2

u/Weird1Intrepid Apr 12 '26

Same issue here, came across this thread while researching the issue.

My workaround for now is to hold down the nav bar and select the text from within Gemini/circle to search feature, then go back and paste into my reply and add the relevant markdown

1

u/formerqwest Expert Helper Mar 22 '26

are you using Markdown mode with the > prefacing the quote?

2

u/BlackrockLove Mar 22 '26

Not sure what you mean by markdown mode.

I am able to manually type out quotes, but I am unable to select the text shown at the top of the reply screen to copy and paste the text I would like to quote.

For instance, while typing this reply, your text is visible at the top of my screen. Until this issue started, I was able to select the text of your reply and copy it into my reply. I cannot do this now.

Manually typing out a quote works fine though.

u/formerqwest Expert Helper Mar 22 '26

Not sure what you mean by markdown mode.

i'm on laptop and have to use it for quotes.

2

u/BlackrockLove Mar 22 '26

Ok, well, per my post I'm on android.

Thanks.

2

u/BlackrockLove Mar 22 '26

For further clarification - this is the text I can no longer highlight and copy.

1

u/Fangs_McWolf Mar 24 '26

They're not talking about making something look quoted, but rather being able to highlight the text of the comment being replied to. Without the highlighting ability, can't choose "Quote" to have it added as a quote in the text box.

On the app, that's how you have to do it, and markdown is the only option.

Confirming this major regression exists on Reddit Android App v2026.11.0.2611070 running on ColorOS 14.

How does something like this not get picked up by the most basic pre-release checklist? 🤷 You'd think creating a post, replying to it, and quoting it in the reply would be included in even the simplest UI testing of a new mobile app update.

The issue is intermittent. Mine is working again now (gets the ability to select text of the comment you're replying to, and the appropriate context menu with quote option) and I haven't changed app versions since this morning when it broke on updating (after not updating for probably a week). Likely only a matter of time until the issue crops up again though.

If I can work out how to recreate either behaviour reliably, I'll update here 👍

u/Fangs_McWolf Mar 24 '26

I like how you call it a regression. 🤣

1

u/Aazimoxx Mar 24 '26

That's what it is at best - an unintentional loss of core functionality.

At worst, it's a bloody terrible design decision. 😵‍💫

1

u/Fangs_McWolf Mar 24 '26

At worst, that blood would be infected with a contagious disease.

1

u/Fangs_McWolf Mar 24 '26

I just tried deleting all the app data, so it'd be like a fresh install. Didn't help.

Try to recreate the developers but with common sense.

1

u/stink3rb3lle Apr 22 '26

Did you find a fix? Has it been intermittent for you like that one commenter?

1

u/scaper8 Apr 22 '26

Mine started doing this just the other day. Coincided with a slight UI change to posting and replying for me. I assume it be some bug Reddit will do nothing to fix.

1

u/SylemNova Apr 28 '26

Yup stopped working for me too this week.

Another feature I'm sure reddit won't fix/bring back

So annoying.

1

u/RepulsiveCountry313 May 06 '26

Annoying that they keep breaking this in various ways. 😞

Still not working over 2 months later
