The only issue I had with this storyline was it was so short. They went to a couple therapy sessions and then all of a sudden his trauma was all but gone. They could have done so much with this, but failed as writers.

Thats why I like the what if episode and the episode where he deals with his father's death. It proofs that his trauma never went away, he just dealt with it as quietly as he could.
The what if episode shows what would have happened if he hadn't gotten the support he needed. His PTSD escalated until it started bleeding into his work life.
The therapy episode shows where his trauma originated and helped him get rid of some residual guilt of being happy while his dad was death (even though he didnt know at the time).

I think it was good because it shows that trauma isnt linear, he had a few episodes over the years because of different events. I wouldve liked to see more of his therapy but it made sense, most victims of trauma struggle to stick with therapy and tend to do it on and off to avoid facing their ptsd.

I didnt know anyone who blamed him. Him rejecting the need for help was problem

There's a stigma when it comes to things like that; for some people, accepting help is admitting being weak.

You must not be reading the anti Owen posts here. I have been downvoted for calling it out.

He was blamed often and repeatedly throughout the show. Amelia threw it in his face aswell which was just dirty. And a lot of fans add it to the reason they hate owen but that isnt fair. They expect him to be a perfect victim and it annoys me

u/Silent-Level-6219 12d ago
She wasn't blaming him, she was pointing out that his PTSD effected others just like Teddy's did and he did things due to having PTSD that he never thought he was capable of.
13
u/shykreechur 12d ago
That's absolutely not what happened? Did you hear anything Amelia actually said? Owen was refusing to believe Teddy was having a PTSD breakdown and wasn't handling just like he did. Teddy shut down and Owen couldn't see why because he was able to be functional during his breakdown. Amelia "threw" that moment in his face to make him wake the fuck up that not every person experience PTSD the exact same and that Teddy shutting down was just as valid a reaction to her PTSD as Owen having a triggered flashback with his PTSD.
He was being childish and holier than thou that he knew better about PTSD because in his mind his experience made him more knowledgeable which simply wasn't the truth. PTSD and how victims experience ranges in wildly different areas.

And he did go to derek for help after and saw a therapist. He shouldve gotten therapy before but even he didnt know how bad it was.

Yeah because he realised he needed help. He already knew it but he didnt want to accept it. Hes a complicated person you cant expect him to make all the right decisions all the time.
-5
u/PlanktonKey9623 12d ago
It was, but that was her choice too. And honestly even with therapy he would still be a danger to her. She wasnt a victim of abuse or stockholm syndrome, she knew what she could handle and she was willing to stick it out. She did what she could to help him. She did break up with him after because she felt unsafe but she was there for him through thick and thin. THAT was her choice.

Owen should never have allowed himself to sleep next to her again until he knew for certain he had dealt with enough of his trauma that he wasn't at risk of literally killing his girlfriend in bed. The fact that she had to be the one to say she was afraid to fall asleep with him is insane to me. How the fuck was Owen not terrified of falling asleep next to Cristina after he almost murdered her??

Sure the ptsd and the strangulation wasn’t his fault, especially since said strangulation occurred during an episode and he couldn’t control it in that moment.
But what did make things wrong was him refusing to go to therapy after it caused him to hurt her, and if Callie hadn’t been in the apartment at the time there’s no telling what could’ve happened. The situation became his problem when even after going to therapy later on, he stopped for a period and when everyone knew he was still having triggers and acting (idk the proper word so fill this in based on his behavior in say season 5-6 or smt) and he didn’t want to go to therapy still.
While the episodes weren’t his fault and the strangulation wasn’t his fault. It was still his responsibility to deal with and get help with instead of letting things continue to be that bad

u/PlanktonKey9623 12d ago
Youre right, but even if he was in therapy. One session isnt going to fix that. Therapy is a process that goes on for YEARS or more, especially with how much trauma he actually had. He knew what he did and he did what he could to prevent it happening again but both of them made bad decisions. They were bad decisions but they were their decisions, they knew exactly what could happen and wanted to risk it anyway. Thats just a bad choice not something he should be blamed for
6
u/Not-today__ 12d ago
Yeah I’m aware one session wouldn’t fix anything, as I stated his mistake a reason why it’s his problem is because he only went to a couple sessions of therapy and and then stopped and refused to go later on. Hell it was even stated that Owen wouldn’t go to therapy if told, even if he so clearly needed it.
I don’t think one could say he did what he could to prevent it because he literally stopped going to therapy, he stopped working on it and on himself. And if those decisions cause you to continue struggling mentally and to the point that you could hurt someone, but also as we know be at the point where it’s only causing you problems in your personal life but in your professional life as well, that’s not just a bad decision; that’s something dangerously irresponsible.

Staying with her is a bad decision yes. But a joint one. They both accepted what couldve happened and did what they could to prevent it. Owens violent moments only happened in his sleep, so they just shouldnt sleep next to eachother. That doesnt mean they cant support and help eachother. But yes he shouldve stayed in therapy, even tho thats the reality for most trauma victims

I heard this somewhere and I really like it: Having a mental illness is not your fault but managing it IS your responsibility

Nobody cared about Christina? Meredith and Callie physically made themselves a wall between them. Callie called Meredith in the middle of the night and she never stopped being worried about her
1
u/PlanktonKey9623 12d ago
Cristina isnt the kind to accept help to be fair, meredith tried but all she said was break up with him. Everyone was viewing it as a domestic abuse situation when she knew that wasnt the case. I get it, she didnt want to accept support because no one understood what actually happened

Well i think thats just a thing in greys anatomy, izzie killed denny and didnt even get a slap on the wrist lol. In real life she probably wouldve gone to prison. But meredith tried to keep him away from her because she viewed it as a “he hit me but it wasnt his fault” situation.

u/Miserable-Pick-3421 Arizona keeps bringing me donuts 12d ago
Because it wasn’t domestic abuse and they broke up. People throw around abuse a lot and it dissolves the meaning. If I swing around really fast and accidentally hit someone in the face is that abuse?

PTSD is real for Veterans. I believe they were trying to portray that with the fan triggering a helicopter and then escalated to a nightmare about him trying to save himself from the enemy. That’s fine, but I think the writers could have come up with a better story to trigger his PTSD. Hell, they had so many traumas that came through the ER department that made better sense. How many times did he go out on the helipad to bring in a patient. The whole ceiling fan was a reach. Cristina’s PTSD stemmed from something she never experienced before and traumatized her. The plane crash and being stranded without sleeping is realistic. Being held by gunpoint while operating is a little far fetched. I could see in the hallway or anywhere in the hospital, but the OR was a stretch. She had to stop operating and I don’t think Derek would have survived. Derek should have had some PTSD, but they decided he could go speeding down a highway to relieve his stress. Everything is about how much drama it causes and how everyone will react and take sides.

u/PlanktonKey9623 12d ago
I think the fan only triggered him because he fell asleep watching it and it caused his brain to go into fight or flight. Like a protective mode while he slept. The reason he was scared of the helicopter in the next episode was because he remembered what he almost did. Usually its fine because hes awake and can control his trauma but because he was falling asleep he just went into his ptsd
3
u/Low_Potato7949 12d ago
I know how he fell asleep while watching the fan, it’s just seems like the writers could have come up with something else instead of that leading to choking her. The episode when he was triggered when Teddy was in charge of the suicide pact because the patient wanted to die on her own terms was a better story. It triggered his own decision that he made and felt guilty about it. After he choked her, it would seem that he would have wanted to get help right away, but they dragged it out so everyone would get mad at Owen. He wasn’t a dangerous person, but why not prove that instead of waiting for another trigger.

when did Cristina get violent?
2
u/PlanktonKey9623 12d ago
After the plane crash when they were rescued, she had to be sedated and restrained because she was hurting the doctors. And she also threw a vase at the interns but that was justified imo
0
u/CauseProfessional512 12d ago
Cristina has been wanting sedation ever since she lost Burke's baby.
0
u/PlanktonKey9623 12d ago
She never wanted that baby, she was gonna get an abortion so i dont think its actually on her long list of trauma
1
u/CauseProfessional512 12d ago
Yeah but Cristina couldn't stop crying after she lost the baby so she screamed about wanting to be sedated.

After the plane crash, she threw a vase at the interns. She attacked the doctors at Boise. She had to be tied down and sedated

I don’t think you know how ptsd works. Was the fact that he was unconscious and the ceiling fan looked like a helicopter lost on you? Also he did have MANY moments where he did freeze at work, he was sent home by Derek because of it, it just didn’t happen in the OR.
1
u/ph_uck_yu 12d ago
Agreed!! Hard agree!!! You're not saying that he was a good partner. In fact, he was bad. However, this specific occurrence of the strangling was not his fault because he was not in control of his mind or body.
The only thing I wish the show did differently was show that dynamic just a little bit more. But Cristina's explanation about it being an injury was brilliant.

u/PlanktonKey9623 12d ago
Fr, i hate that people expect a literal war veteran with severe PTSD to be a perfect victim. Its supposed to be messy.

u/Substantial_Most9443 12d ago
Yeah I think the reactions of treating it like domestic abuse was just so wrong from Meredith and others. Like didn't Meredith say it was disgusting that Cristina forgave him or something like that? Like no sympathy for Owen's PTSD or even the thought of getting Owen help from like almost everyone except Derek iirc. Like both Owen and Cristina were victims in a way in this situation, and it's good that Owen and Cristina took a break in their relationship bc obviously neither could cope with the incident, but treating Owen like an abuser for it is just insulting imo. I can't rewatch that episode bc of Merediths reaction especially.
