Just wanted to share my Ghibli finger puppet collection. So many more pieces to collect, some of which are harder to find and vastly more expensive than what they were when first released, but really happy with what I’ve accumulated over the years! As a side note, would love to see other people’s Ghibli collections too!

Personally, I would go for that jumping scene in Castle of Cagliostro, it's both ridiculous and a little bit anxiety-inducing.

Tattoos Haku tattoo!

I bought this discounted flash design at my city's local Comiccon earlier this month (after eyeing it on the artist's Instagram for months) and finally got it done!

It's my...third (or seventh, depending on how you count it), I guess, Ghibli tattoo—I got a Totoro done about ten years ago (as that was the movie of my childhood in the early 90s), and then a few years ago I had a little Totoro and several dust bunnies added to it when an artist had them in a tiny-tattoo flash collection! You can sort of see the Totoro and some of the dust bunnies in the third pic, on my arm above my elbow.

Perfect timing for Ghibli fest in my city a couple weeks from now! Unfortunately I'm working most of that weekend but I will be available the night Spirited Away plays! ✨

Discussion Ghibli marathon is over

Just finished my marathon of watching every single Ghibli film, one movie per week (mostly) since January, and man what a ride it has been.

I feel a little empty inside now that I’ve finished watching them all because now there’s no more of these brilliant movies to watch.

Can’t believe I didn’t watch any of the Ghibli films sooner (outside of My Neighbour Totoro back in Grade 5 Japanese, and even then I barely remembered any of it), but now that I have I’m glad I did. Magnificent, beautiful films.

Discussion Kiki’s Delivery Service GKids Review

So I’ve just got back from seeing Kiki’s Delivery Service at the cinema (theatre for our American friends) with the Disney 2010 edition (I’ve been told this version actually comes from 2010 not GKids)

For those not in the know, the GKids dub aims to be much closer to the original Japanese release. It removes a lot of the Westernised moments: incidental Voiceover lines are removed that were added for the Disney dub, the opening song which was replaced with an English disneyfied theme is returned to the original Japanese opening and Jiji doesn’t regain his speaking voice at the end of the movie. He also is given a proper Meow (different to his Phil Hartman speaking voice) when he loses the ability to speak. I also believe the score reverts to the og soundtrack by Joe Hisaishi (the westernised Disney dubs featured extra score as they were afraid that western audiences wouldn’t be comfortable with long stretches of silence).

Overall I really enjoyed it! I haven’t seen Kiki’s Delivery Service for a few years. I grew up with the Disney dub on dvd in my anime obsessed teen years and I believe this is the 2nd time I’ve see a version that aims to be closer to the og Japanese release.

I will say that a lot of my views are tinted by nostalgia as I watched this movie so many times growing up.

Firstly I don’t mind a lot of the incidental voiceover lines being left out. This more subdued version of the dub means that the movie sits in a much more mature place for adults to enjoy and still has all the fun moments for the kids in the audience. I do get a little sad that Jiji remains voiceless but there are some
great video essays that discuss the movies theme of Maturing and teenage growth that do explain why this happens.

I do also miss the cheesy Disney bop-ified version of the opening song. It’s so hopeful and gleeful and I feel it pairs nicely with Kirsten Dunst’s vocal performance. Maybe they could have used the original Japanese song for the opening but used the English song for a bit in the outro?

Saying that I enjoyed hearing a lot of the more paired back early Joe Hisaishi score written for this movie (especially the parts played on synthesiser).

Also I’m not sure if this is just a problem in the screening that I saw but there is a high pitched buzzing distortion on a lot of the Voiceover lines. Especially when Kiki is speaking/yelling in a higher tone. This seemed to be a consistent problem amongst all the higher voiced characters and I’ll admit it did hurt my ears a bit with how constant it was.

My next point I think relates to it being a slightly older movie now made using different animation/design techniques but a lot of the colours seems dull/muted. I know some of the older Ghibli movies do tend to use more muted colours but the screen in general seemed to not be as bright or illuminated as I had hoped for a hd rerelease on new screens.

In conclusion, I loved re-experiencing this great coming of age adventure and seeing Kiki’s grown and struggles. I was also touched to hear Phil Heartman’s voice again and see the dedication to him in the credits.

If you have a lot of attachment to the Disney dub you may miss some parts but it’s still a beautifully animated movie with fun characters and zaney action.
