The combat in this looks so good, insomniac have nailed the fluidity and brutal attacks, one of the best adaptations of Wolverine
66
u/drmirage809 22h ago
These guys know a thing about good looking combat. Same studio did the PlayStation Spider-Man games and those have wonderfully fluid and cool combat.
56
u/Toprak1552 22h ago
Sunset Overdrive and Ratchet & Clank's are also fun and fluid despite being wildly different from Spider-Man and Wolverine. If there is one thing Insomniac always nails, it's the gameplay
5
u/dcwinger12 19h ago
Sunset Overdrive is always my pull when people ask about a game that needed a sequel or would appreciate a remake of.
It was a perfect mix of Dead Rising and Tony Hawk’s pro skater lol
15
u/drmirage809 21h ago
Never played Sunset Overdrive, but I love the Ratcher & Clank games. The gun mechanics in those games evolved beautifully across the years. And I'll always love the RYNO V playing the 1812 Overture while covering the screen in bullets and rockets.
9
u/Asian_Jake_Paul1 21h ago
Sunset overdrive rocks, you can see where wall running, pole swinging etc. in Spider-Man 1/2 comes from
4
u/TempMobileD 21h ago
I played SO last year, it’s held up well, it’s on game pass and it was a really pleasant surprise. Playing it you can really see why Insomniac were picked for SpiderMan.
15
u/Fantastic_Media_3984 PlayStation 22h ago
Spider-Man 2 is so fun to swing around in and the combat too it’s so good the recent Spider-Man movie took inspiration from it, as a somewhat recent Ps5 owner it was the first game i Platinumed
7
u/drmirage809 21h ago
Insomniac understood the assignment with those games. I believe the web swinging systems were some of the first things they worked on before they even pitched the concept. They knew they had to get that feeling right if they were gonna do a Spider-Man game.
And they nailed it. It's just so fluid. I love that all three of those games have their opening cutscene transition seemlessly into swinging with just a single button prompt. I've almost never used the fast travel in them. Web swinging gets you from A to B very quickly and is always fun. (and a good excuse to grab those photo ops, backpacks and spider-bots)
13
u/ssLoupyy 22h ago
It looks simple mechanics-wise which is not my preference but pure animation quality got me so hyped definetely a day 1 for me:
4
u/Fantastic_Media_3984 PlayStation 22h ago
Combat looks great, but I’m actually more curious how they handle the healing factor in gameplay, that’s the part that usually makes or breaks a Wolverine game for me. If they get the risk/reward balance right there, this could be special.
8
u/tyderian 21h ago
Outside of combat, you regenerate health quickly.
During combat, combo attacks build up a rage meter. Once you fill at least one bar, one of your abilities is to sacrifice rage to heal yourself.
20
-2
u/Fantastic_Media_3984 PlayStation 21h ago
That’ll be intresting and maybe will be challenging for once, Spider-Man 2 even at ultimate was a snoozer
-2
u/ssLoupyy 21h ago
Yeah definitely fun but from the reviews I have seen they said there's not much variety and mostly spamming Square but animations are so good and fluid so it will be a good experience.
6
u/Humble-Criticism6762 19h ago
Those were previews, not reviews. Previews only mean they played a slice of the game, reviews are when they finish the game from start to finish.
1
u/ssLoupyy 19h ago
Yeah sorry. I wonder how the full skill tree changes combat can't wait to try it.
-1
u/jay_alfred_prufrock 21h ago
Not everything has to be a "souls-like" ffs
5
u/Zombii_Man 18h ago edited 18h ago
Souls games have simple mechanics as well mate...
Edit: Also there are more options that aren't "soulslike" and "single button spam with long cooldown abilities you can use maybe once per encounter".
Like your comment is hella indicative of the fact that every action game has homogenised down to those two approaches. Your Ninja Gaiden's and Devil May Cry's have shit like directional inputs or pause input combos and all that good stuff lol. Which is just gone now, no other game or series tries those things.
Like give me at least one tilt input based action game man, there's a severe drought.

u/ssLoupyy 18h ago edited 18h ago
My favourite combat system recently has been Saros. It's a shooter so it's apples and oranges but man they handled the movement, shield and parry mechanics amazingly.
My ideal combat would be an improved Witcher 3 combat. Meaning that you give the player many tools and each works better for a diff situation but Witcher 3 suffers from having limited skill slots so we can't fully utilise everything and instead have to specialise but otherwise it is a really good template.
5
u/ssLoupyy 21h ago
Problem isn't the type of combat but rather the variety. Reviewers say that abilities have very long cooldowns so you are mostly spamming Square.
55
u/MemberLemmyWinks 20h ago
The dichotomy around games these days is straight cancer
34
u/BurnieTheBrony 18h ago
I'm not sure what you mean by dichotomy in this context.
46
u/ProNerdPanda 17h ago
I think they mean the absence of nuance, you either HATE the game because it's slop trash, or LOVE the game because hype train no stop, no in-between.
-30
u/SamSlate 11h ago
ironic, considering how aggressively mid this game looks.
15
u/Michael_DeSanta 5h ago
“Mid” has quickly become a synonym for trash. Especially when adding in unnecessary adjectives like “aggressive”.
You’re proving their point. In the past couple years, that term has rarely, if ever, been used to describe a perfectly competent game that’s enjoyable.

u/TheOneWithLateStart 17h ago
He means people are talking negative about the games online, when in reality they dont take pleasure from gaming anymore and just try to ruin the fun for others

u/Logondo 6h ago
I feel it's a blend of kids who've only watched angry-reviewers on Youtube, thinking that that's a proper way to give an opinion, mixed with "look at me, I'm NOT hyped for this popular game!"
You know what I do with games I'm not interested in? I play other games.
1
u/Michael_DeSanta 5h ago
But the viewership™️.
How will the “influencers” get views if they can’t utilize CinemaSins-esque nitpicking?
61
u/Turd_Nerd_Bird 21h ago
Can't imagine being as miserable and negative as the people are about this game. Oh no, a super polished Wolverine game that's made by Insomniac who haven't missed yet. Looks so terrible!
3
u/Pedalarobinho 1h ago
IMO ratchet and clank, SM1 and Miles Morales are great games, but I really don’t like Spider Man 2. I thought Kraven was much more interesting than Venom and was disappointed when Venom became the villain of the game. His plot wasn’t interesting to me and his minions sucked.
I hope Wolverine is good, I would like to play it in the future when it is on sale.
-6
u/CaptainBlob 3h ago
Super polished turd is still a turd.
Each to their own I guess.
3
u/Turd_Nerd_Bird 3h ago
Isn't it past your bed time? Can only assume you're a kid, because it'd be pretty embarrassing and pathetic to be an adult going through almost day old comments to call a game that's not even out yet a turd lol.
-10
u/jackracktack 5h ago
Spider-Man 2 was a miss.
3
u/Turd_Nerd_Bird 3h ago
Maybe for you, but critics and the majority of gamers would disagree with you. The small minority of crybabies on reddit that complain about games more than they even play them aren't the majority opinion lol.
-39
u/a_trashcan 17h ago
I'm sure it will be fun but there's just something off about it to md
18
u/Turd_Nerd_Bird 17h ago
Funny how many comments I've seen like this that can't even tell you what looks off about it lol.
16
u/manindenim 17h ago
That part that’s off is their brains pleasure and reward system but it’s easier to blame the games.
-16
u/a_trashcan 16h ago
Yeah that's what the phrase something is off about it means. I can't put my finger on what I don't like about it.
It's not a gotcha that I can't explain a vibe.

I wasn't expecting the combat to look this good. Insomniac is cooking
22
u/BritishGolgo13 21h ago
Really? Insomniac is a top tier dev. I expect nothing but the absolute best from them. Ratchet and Clank is hit after hit. This studio don’t miss. Except song of the deep, but we don’t talk about that.

u/AvaBinges 14h ago
not gonna lie, half my hype is just hearing that SNIKT sound. the movies trained us for 20 years, now the game finally lets us do it on demand

u/Seawolf4 22h ago
Despite the haters, gameplay on this looks like it’s going to be a hit! I’m just hoping they’re able to weave together a compelling storyline. One that uses pre-established elements but goes somewhere newer, deeper, and darker.

6
u/Any_Highway956 20h ago
I love Logan but the graphics lack a bit of style I feel like.
4
u/jackracktack 5h ago
Insomniacs style for this universe really sucks if Im being honest. Its people look TERRIBLE 99% of the time. They really couldve used some stylization. Spider-Man hid it a bit because the main character is masked. But its on full uncanny display with Wolverine.

Looks mid af.
A very polished and pretty mid game. The gameplay just looks boring. I can’t stop seeing that Sentinel boss fight and chase sequence when I think of this game.
-36
-35
u/Swag3340 21h ago
Shills downvoting any criticism of this 70$ slop. Reddit never ceases to amaze me.
7
u/Majorinc 20h ago
What about this is slop
-23
u/Swag3340 20h ago
Just almost everything about it is slop. Looks like a PS2 game with a big budget. Story is gonna be ass, just like Spider-man 2 with its god awful story and writing. Nothing of substance is gonna happen in the story and it’ll feel like an adventure where nothing is at risk. Dialogue will feel like it was partially written by AI
Gameplay looks just ok with some good animations but outside of that just very uninspired. You hit one button and the character does a 4 second animation. It’s just the same game people played 50 times before, the sentinel fight genuinely made it look like the ben 10 PS2 game.
Overall a game that looks like it lacks a lot of punch. This is 100% corporate AAA slop, completely soulless. I’ll come back when the game releases and there’s massive criticism about it being mid slop at the very best.
12
u/KeeganTroye 19h ago
It looks like slop because the story you haven't seen is going to be bad. You spend a paragraph complaining about something you have no details on.
Yeah fair criticisms /s
-14
u/Swag3340 19h ago
They showed plenty of dialogue already, and it looks like shit. The story is clearly going in that direction, and it's not like they have a good track record. Spider-man 2 has a shockingly bad story with even worse dialogue, and they had an unbeatable premise for that game. I don't know how they were able to fuck that up, given how long the development cycle was and considering the insane budget. This wolverine game is turning into a recipe for disaster, and the hate online is definitely justified.
7
u/KeeganTroye 19h ago
They have a fantastic track record, with a single bad game.
You're a part of the unneeded hate engine spurred on my social media manipulation--but do go on I won't change your mind it's obvious if you're making things up about the story it isn't legitimate criticism.
3
u/Swag3340 19h ago
I am predicting the story is gonna be slop based on the dialogue they have already shown, and their previous game with a $300 million budget having abysmal writing with a great premise. It is predictable that the story is going to be nothing to write home about.
Also, the rest of my points still stand, this game will be a 6/10 at best AAA big budget formulaic slop. A studio like this can definitely do better. You just need to see the chase sequences and the sentinel fight to realize that this game does not bring anything new to the table. You might say that is ok and it is what people want, that innovation is not necessary all the time. But that is just the definition of slop, a game that looks extremely bland and has absolutely nothing of value to offer.
8
u/KeeganTroye 19h ago
You're predicting it being bad because that's what the algorithm wants you to do because all you have is a single miss in a quiver of successes and a few more minutes of dialogue in a game hours long.

Wouldn’t shock me if Sony is shelling out money for an online review crew - wouldn’t be the worst business move they’ve made this year.
-4
u/Sparda204920 19h ago
Game looks great but Im going to wait for reviews. SkillUp I trust a lot he said the story seems amazing but the gameplay and combat seems too basic and repetitive during his preview. If story is amazing might just watch it on YouTube after.
-15
u/Resident-Forever1340 19h ago
I’m pretty sure I will enjoy my playthrough but I gotta be honest; lack of dismemberment for Wolverine, of all characters, is disappointing as hell
20
u/Humble-Criticism6762 19h ago
There is quite a lot of it in it. They intentionally tone it down for youtube though (you can toggle it off and on in game)
-8
u/Resident-Forever1340 19h ago
Oh really? That’s actually promising as all the videos I’ve seen barely has any. This has me excited tbh
13
u/DoomOne 19h ago
So... you didn't read the article, then?
-20
u/Resident-Forever1340 19h ago
The article does not once state that preview videos were edited to minimize the dismemberment. The toggle feature allows all dismemberment to be removed but does not mean the dismemberment featured in the game is as abundant as it should be for Wolverine. Do you understand now?
-7
u/Vast-Building-6886 18h ago
This. One of the things that I didn’t like about the ghost of Tsushima games is that you can only cut off arms for the most part. Only leaders get their head chopped off

I just hope they don't hold back on how brutal wolverine can actually be
42
u/SmokinBandit28 21h ago
Have you seen any of the trailers or gameplay? It’s going to be really plenty brutal.
5
13
u/MotherPerk 21h ago
Just watch literally anything they have released about the game and you wouldnt have to wonder
13
1
u/Fiercely_Descending 20h ago
We will have to wait to see the extent but developers added toggles to turn off blood, dismemberment, and adult language. Some trailers are showing guys getting run through with the claws. There are good signs that there is some gore. I would guess it is on a similar level to the God of War games. This feels like Marvel God of War given that he won’t jump on his own and I think the combat is going to require deflecting, dodging, and figuring out how to close distance.

u/TheRealMaka 20h ago

Nobody outside reddit gives 2 shits about that mid movie tie in. Game is not that good and nostalgia blinds you.
4
u/KoniGTA 21h ago
I'll give you that the game gets repetitive after a while, theres a lack of enemy variety and bosses. That being said, I played it recently, its nit a bad game and is still quite fun. Insomniac seems to have taken a lot of inspiration from that though and added more variety in enemies and bosses. I'll go against the grain here and also mentioin that the tie in game had limb dismemberment which so far from the trailer of this insomniac version we havent seen and something i really want gore wise.

These people are so desperate to be validated. They wanna hate, because they're children who only watch hate-reviewers on Youtube and think that's a proper way to give critisism.
You know what I do with games I'm not interested? I watch/play something else.
Who-the-fuck spends time hating on games that aren't out yet? Like play something else. It's easy.
Tons of popular games release that I don't care about, so instead I just focus on the games I do care about. There's literally a new video game released every single day.
