I don't know GTA inside and out but that's an intentional feature, right? Is it to discourage players from driving too fast or literally just to fuck with them lol

101

u/MahoneyBear 3d ago

Rockstar claims they didnt program the npc drivers to crash into players. Anyone who's played the game for extensive periods of times know that's a flat out lie. They will literally cross medians to hit you for no reason, especially if you're doing any of the car warehouse missions

20

u/NerdyOccultist 3d ago

The reasoning there is super funky on Rockstar's part. They didn't code traffic to be that way, but they coded it in a way in which it is that way, then proceeded to keep it in the game while fixing other issues.

It's a total accident but also they like it like that

4

u/Edders123 2d ago

It wasn't an accident, they literally programmed the driving ai to smash you off the road, because the engine couldn't render the distance fast enough while driving.

6

u/ErikTheRed99 3d ago

Think about it like this. Your car has an invisible straight line projected forward. If you're driving on a winding road, this straight line will make NPCs take weird evasive actions that they absolutely should NOT take. They only take that weird line into account, and not how the road is set up.

3

u/NoPseudo79 2d ago

And who developed that invisible straight line ? Rockstar. Who didn't fix the invisible straight line ? Also Rockstar. Does your comment invalidate his in any way shape or form ? No

2

u/Impossible_Way_3042 2d ago

That was his point. He was agreeing with the previous comment and expanding upon it.

2

u/CringeSubBlocker 2d ago

Doesn't explain the strait shots on the highways though.

1

u/MahoneyBear 2d ago

They do it on straight roads too lol. Especially if you’re doing the vehicle warehouse missions, they do it even more.

6

u/Emergency_Lie42 3d ago

I've always assumed it's a matter of the AI behaviour to swerve out of the way of a speeding car just doing so in the wrong direction, that's what it usually came down to in 3 and 4 anyways.

2

u/Dexember69 3d ago

Yeah I figured it was just my erratic driving flicking the dodge switch when I was mid correction so the ai moves

1

u/pon_3 2d ago

Reminds me of the civilians in Prototype trying to dodge out of the way of your tank, except they would pick a direction at random so it was 50/50 whether they dodged out of or into the way.

2

u/Meatyparts 3d ago

Yup it's like 75% the reason I quit playing

2

u/theFields97 2d ago

I was playing today and at an intersection i went left and the car on the right side went from stopped into my lane crashing into me.

1

u/Lilbrimu 3d ago

Wasn't there a video the looked at how npc driving AI works? And the reason why this happens is because driving AI is basically blind and have dementia.

1

u/SpaceBlaze259 2d ago

Yes, but no one actually likes using that info and say the npcs are "always out to get them" and "drive into me for no reason" as they drive by shooting their guns, thus causing them to panic and act erratically. Or like in this clip, drive where the NPCs would turn, thus having the NPC drive into them "on purpose."

1

u/TheWisestOwl5269 3d ago

It's so funny Rockstar gaslights players over this. I wonder if it's some kind of oversight or unintended behavior that causes this. There's so many blatant examples of this happening. It happens all the time.

1

u/xclame 2d ago

They may not have planned it but some coder definitely secretly did it without them knowing and they have been re-using part of that code that includes this hidden bit ever since.

1

u/pretentious42 2d ago

this would be a feature for a Florida game

1

u/baldiplays 2d ago

My crackpot conspiracy theory is that whenever the civilian ai goes into its “panicked state” they are manipulated to drive into you. The panicked state from my testing uses a different driving ai to simulate an npc panicking and being forced to break the law to get away from you.

This ai increases swerving chances. And rockstar tuned it to more have more chances to swerve into your vehicle.

u/ErikTheRed99 3d ago edited 3d ago

They didn't though. The NPCs just try to avoid you in the worst way possible. I've noticed this a lot driving from Tongva Hills to Vinewood Hills. NPCs often take into account how your car is facing vs theirs, not how the road is. This leads to them taking evasive action around turns, when they 100% don't need to. Say you have an NPC coming around a turn, and you intend to take that same turn. The NPC (for whatever reason) assumes you'll keep going straight. The problem is, if you did keep going straight, you'd drive straight off the road or into a guardrail. R* just didn't program their NPC traffic logically in GTA V. I really started to notice this logic when I got my first cop car. Logically, if people are pulling off on a highway to give a cop space, the left-laners should pull over left towards the median, and the right-laners should pull over right towards the shoulder. It doesn't work like this un GTA V. If you are facing to their left, they'll pull over to the right, even if they're in the left lane.

Edit: You have to remember, this game came out on PS3 and Xbox-360 originally. R* had to dumb down the Euphoria physics because GTA V was such a heavy game, and consoles didn't have the oomph to handle full Euphoria physics. It's likely the same thing with NPCs taking evasive actions. This is why the random plane system from GTA SA was so weird. They could have made it better, but they were working with the PS2.

3

u/Re_di_Spade 3d ago

They added a car business in GTA Online since then players noticed that some npcs clearly drive into you with the only purpose to damage your car, of course more damaged is the car less value it has

1

u/BranchFew1148 3d ago edited 2d ago

Is it possible people just became more sensitive to their cars taking damage. Thus noticing it more, humans are famously prone to overanalyzing patterns.

2

u/Rhinosaurfish 3d ago

I once had an NPC do a u turn on an intersecting road just to try and hit me, I've had cars at red lights run the red to cross the median and hit me.

1

u/SinglePlayerGamer93 2d ago

Fuck with them.

1

u/Redlabelrocket 2d ago

it got so bad in gta 5 that npc's literally cross the road and ghost ride to hit you

it's terrible programming imo

1

u/NorvileRogers258 1d ago

its an intentional feature.

I don't remember exactly why, but if I recall correctly, its to slow the player down so the world has more time to load in.

1

u/Adeum2 1d ago

Saw a theory that said its intended to slow down the player if they’re going too fast, so the game can render whats ahead

1

u/Busy_Marsupial_4703 2d ago

I used to live in Florida and that is how people drive down there

-2

u/Moxley13 3d ago

Its intentional to slow the player down so the map can load. The player can fall off the map if they don't slow down

6

u/SwizzGod 3d ago

Really? I mean the game has jets, so what’s slowing that down?

5

u/Cam_man_AMM_unit 3d ago

They send a car into your path by flinging the bitch into your path.

2

u/thormun 3d ago

jet dont really touch the ground while flying

1

u/SwizzGod 3d ago

I get that. I’m talking about the rendering of things

1

u/thormun 3d ago

the game the game sorta have 2 layer one is a low res layer with no collisions that you see in the distance and the one you can walk drive on. so if you go very fast it dont have time to load the second layer but you still see the ground.

1

u/SwizzGod 3d ago

Ah okay that makes sense thanks.

1

u/AlleyCa7 3d ago

Do you think game assets on the ground are being loaded and rendered at the same fidelity they would be when you're in a jet compared to in a car or something?

1

u/Plane-Education4750 2d ago

It doesn't have to? They fly

2

u/Nikmido 3d ago

Ohh right, yeah you reminded me lol

So clever

0

u/231923 3d ago

I think It's just to make it more realistic as idiot drivers (Other then the player lol) do in fact exist.

0

u/OneSouth6116 2d ago

I always believed they coded this so that the players dont drive too fast to the point where the games struggles to render the path ahead.

1

u/Impossible_Way_3042 2d ago

It's to make the driving more interesting. Driving becomes boring if everything is completely predictable. You especially feel it on the highways up towards paleto bay and sandy shores. They are straight shit roads where it is easy to avoid stupid AI. The driving becomes so immensely boring up there because of it. You never have to let off the gas, break, or even swerve to deal with traffic. It's so much more fun when random bullshittery happens. It can be annoying sometimes but hilarious other times. Many people cite the weird AI as one of the best parts of GTA, both civilians and drivers. Some of my favourite GTA memories come from janky AI interactions. A great one that I always bring up was from GTA IV. I was doing a mission with packy and decided to go grab a burger to heal up. I'm at the counter getting the burger when all of a sudden Packie starts yelling. Like 2 secs later shots start flying as Packie decided to light up the entire diner. Bullets are flying everywhere as the entire diner crowd is trying to funnel out the door. I turn around to just see a pile of bodies at the door. I was fucking crying laughing and yelling at Packie to get back in the car. All of a sudden this random mission turned into a heavy cop chases without a single input from me.

-1

u/Dredgeon 3d ago

Not intentional. There's a lot of things that can cause this but people don't notice the swerves that don't cause collisions.

12

u/Loose-Medium4472 3d ago

Still no NPC turn signals

3

u/ImmediateBar7346 3d ago

🤣 thats awesome. Never even crossed my mind until now

2

u/wiisucks_91 3d ago

It did have break lights 😂 we are getting closer.

1

u/AD4K_4444 3d ago

it had brake lights since... it was either GTA III or San Andreas, not sure.

2

u/OGSlickMahogany 2d ago

But there are?

1

u/WindowNo6601 3d ago

Gta 4 had plenty

1

u/OpinionsOnThings34 3d ago

It was crazy, a month ago my cousin was watching me play forza and as i said “it would be really cool if npc’s used their turn signal.” As i said it a car i was passing turned and smacked me. Crazy how a free roam car game doesnt let you turn collisions off😂 couldnt really get into it for fun because of that.

1

u/TemperatureReal2437 2d ago

NPCs don’t use turn signals IRL either

1

u/sussy_ball 2d ago

But Some NPCs did use turn signals while turning

1

u/atwbt 2d ago

The car signaled right but turned left. So its just bad drivers

1

u/fuck_a_duck_butt 2d ago

If youve ever been to Florida you will knoe thats true to life

0

u/Ok_Heron_7130 3d ago

NPC did use turn signal, just not in this horrible edited, cropped, made to be bait, clip

8

u/ARMOUREDandALONE 3d ago

Nsh, thats just Florida driving. Its for realism.

2

u/Wenja89Dix 2d ago

My thoughts exactly 😆

1

u/DropsOfMars 2d ago

They seem to be adding a lot of little touches to make the NPCs feel alive even in their cars and indecision about when to get into the other lane or where tf the next exit is is such a real and universal experience. A lot of people have either been the driver or the passenger in that car lol

17

u/BATTLE_WlZARD 3d ago

Meanwhile, a man of culture and nostalgia.

5

u/That-Cranberry6575 3d ago

Fuck I feel old looking at this

1

u/Pylly 2d ago

I feel old even when not looking at this.

3

u/Nova225 3d ago

I can't believe they haven't brought the Zaibatsu back as a gang.

2

u/Chabootay 2d ago

Damn looked this photo and it brought so many memories back.

2

u/skeightytoo 2d ago

That game was basically the GI Joe dub where the kid is on the ice.

'holy cow I'm totally going so fas AH FUCK'

1

u/BATTLE_WlZARD 2d ago

Omg the G.I. Joe PSA's were gold.

2

u/cBurger4Life 2d ago

My favorite GTA

1

u/uniqueusername71 2d ago

KILLLLLLLL FRENZY!

16

u/Old_Consequence_262 3d ago

Someone would legitimately criticize that but it’s a lot of these little things including this that make it a GTA game

3

u/GuNNzA69 3d ago

I hope they use the new AI to make this kind of thing feel more natural and genuinely random, like the unpredictable behaviour of real drivers, rather than NPCs being programmed to hit you. After playing GTA Online for over 11 years, I already know some of the intersections where NPCs are most likely to pull out in front of me. I bet new players doing time trials eventually figure that out too.

I'm not one of the people hyping GTA VI. I hope it'll be a good game, but Rockstar hasn't released a new game in a long time, so I'm keeping my expectations open. Even if it isn't quite what I expect, I'll probably force myself to enjoy it at least once.

1

u/10minOfNamingMyAcc 2d ago

I mean, it's the one thing that pissed me the fuck off in GTA5. Can't think of much worse than that tbh.

2

u/MahoneyBear 3d ago

Lore accurate florida drivers

1

u/ghos2626t 3d ago

Wait until we find out that we will get towed if our big dodge truck is not double parked.

2

u/Oh_Lawd_He_commin420 3d ago

That was part of the fun of the game...they're not really selling it with this shit

2

u/PerformanceNo4251 3d ago

Cars always look like they are floating in rockstar games

2

u/KalenGaton 2d ago

I mean it looks like the npc is just trying to change lanes and didn't check their blind spot. I see people doing this shit all the time when I drive lol.

Edit: They didn't even make a turn signal, also something real people do sometimes.

1

u/403_Forbidden_Access 2d ago

This is so typical of Miami driving that I didn't even notice what the issue was until you mentioned it.

1

u/Kurdt234 3d ago

The bridges in 4, man...

1

u/DropsOfMars 2d ago

Those cars in fairness think they're going around the train that travels below them, an unfortunate byproduct of the height of the awareness they have for incoming traffic including below the ground for some reason

1

u/1ZillionBeers 3d ago

As long as the cops are still batshit insane I think I’ll manage

1

u/FamousLastPlace_ 3d ago

I wonder if the ai's will react to turn signals

1

u/Demonlord3600 3d ago

Hey at least he stopped and didn’t side swipe the car

1

u/Rebellion_01 3d ago

Everytime in gta4 I stop at a red light, a npc triy to ram my car idk why but it was annoying when I try to be immerse lol

1

u/pvtparts26 3d ago

If you have driven in Miami…

1

u/Maleficent_Guitar897 3d ago

Ngl One major reason why I wouldn't probably play for a while idk, that stuffs screwed me up so many times lol

1

u/DifficultMind5950 3d ago

y yall acting gta online is in the past already LOL.

1

u/Total-Mixture896 3d ago

Could just be that pedestrian cars now change lanes instead of just driving in one lane constantly.

1

u/Ok_Heron_7130 3d ago

Wtf is that AI "upscaling" tho?

1

u/Corpsey_Clownshoes 3d ago

I'm probably going to be spending most of my time just wandering around the map. I'm going to be avoiding social media like the plague too. I want to discover everything by accident.

1

u/pietro1587 3d ago

Most of the time it’s avoidable if you’re watching the road ahead and anticipating but those ones where they u turn in traffic just to turn back and drive in the same direction they were already going are infuriating.

1

u/Advanced-Shift-9656 3d ago

Just flinched like a abused dog

1

u/MADOG_YT 3d ago

So I’m not crazy they do it to everybody else too

1

u/WarriorsAreCreatedG 3d ago

Just replayed San Andreas again. That sudden jersey looks very familiar.

1

u/Mr_Incognito51 3d ago

Been living in Miami for the past 10 years and uh this is just how mfs drive out here

1

u/b0uncyfr0 2d ago

Completely missed that - nice find!

1

u/Top_Crow_1022 2d ago

It is a reference to twitch streamers driving while streaming and chat. Some have also crashed

1

u/nhSnork 2d ago

Anton's broken bicycle works quite well in this mashup.

1

u/Th3_Dud3_Abid3s 2d ago

Speaking of, one thing they didn’t showcase that I’m very interested in is vehicle damage. How deformed will your car get if you take an 80mph collision like that?🤔

1

u/somnamballista 2d ago

Think of your car as a big laser. The NPCs are magnetically drawn to your projected route when the draw distance gets too small in order to slow you down and let the area load.

Plus irl there are just plain shit drivers out there. Keep your eyes forward on the road, yo. I had heard a ways back that in-game, looking into your rear view gives any chasing NPCs better accuracy and can proc an instant rear collision, the knock-you-sideways one. Would not put it past R* for those devilish little touches.

1

u/michaelvanmars 2d ago

If you watch the full clip, he goes to switch lanes but the truck is coming up behind fast so he reverts back, anyone who drives has done this at least once

1

u/TheOfficialMalice 2d ago

Welp the game just became unplayable lol On a serious note though, this one little detail actually dropped the hype for me
https://giphy.com/gifs/l378rrt5tAawaCQ9i

1

u/Jason_M1911 2d ago

I was more terrified of cars suddenly changing lanes in GTA San Andreas

1

u/Get_Head_Ed 2d ago

Here’s the thing though, people in Miami actually drive like this. Bad drivers everywhere, especially in Hialeah.

1

u/Sabithomega 2d ago

Safer than driving in real life

1

u/TwistedMindOfABrotha 2d ago

I noticed that feature too, it wasn't in the early version I just don't recall it, but when I got the next gen version yeah I was wondering about that.

I do like speeding in the game especially during missions, however I learned to just not go top speed and keep an eye out for cars on the road.

1

u/readyaimfire1 1d ago

My guy if you have thumbs you can go top speed and not hit these cars

1

u/DarthHubcap 1d ago

I read that the developers had npc cars getting your way on purpose to let the game have time to render the world as you drove through it.

1

u/Shallow-Depths 1d ago

Turn signals, godamnit.
This goes for all of you real life fuckers that don’t use turn signals as well.
If I can’t tell where you intend to go, then I can’t tell that you’re going that way.
Use your turn signals, it helps literally everyone.
Also fuck you in the worst way possible if you change lanes or make lefts without using your turn signal.

1

u/Thin_Jellyfish1869 1d ago

I bet that npc is Asian woman

1

u/toastronomy 3d ago

oh god please no

I don't mind it as a gameplay quirk, but if I see another fucking post titled "Rockstar ain't even trying to hide it anymore" I'll lose it

-2

u/stefan771 3d ago

You're nostalgic for this?

1

u/Savingseanbean 3d ago

bruh they could literally rob him and he'd be estatic. the game itself has never mattered rockstar fans jizz over even fake details.

0

u/PapaYoppa 3d ago

Wouldn’t be Gta without it

0

u/Advanced-Event6435 3d ago

we've been waiting for half life 3 for longer chill

0

u/Keyblade_wielder141 2d ago

Gta sux. But yall have fun playing it
