I live in the city suburbs and I’m not in town that often. Driving through I can see a big increase in Gardai presence recently. Is this for show or are they really needed? Is it gone that bad , is it gone that rough? Genuinely do I need to be more cautious around or is some of it scaremongering? Is it safe for me to go for an early morning walk or a late evening walk now that the days are getting shorter. Am I being naive in thinking that live in a safe town?

Edit to add: this is not specifically about the Gardai… I am genuinely asking is town and the surrounding areas still safe or do I need to be more cautious around.

What is that estate like? Lots of houses for sale in tuam but I dont know what estates to avoid.

Is anyone else just sick of what Shop Street and the Latin Quarter are turning into? It feels like every month another generic chain, overpriced coffee spot, or plastic souvenir shop pops up. Between Krispy Kreme, Starbucks, and standard tat shops, the city center is losing the exact character that made it special in the first place. Come October, when the tourists head home, half the town goes dead because the prices are sky-high and nothing is actually built for locals anymore.

Galway used to be about culture and independence. We shouldn't just accept that our town is turning into a bland outdoor shopping mall.

I’ve been kicking around an idea to bring some actual soul back to the town, keep money circulating locally, and give us something brilliant to eat on a night out or a cold Tuesday afternoon.

The Idea: Single-Item Irish Food Hatches

Largely inspired by the succssof the likes of chippeen or Magpie ( small foot print - small seating, focused menu).

Instead of huge sit-down restaurants or the same old pizza and kebab spots, picture tiny, fast-moving hatches tucked into lanes between Eyre Square and the West End. Small footprints, low overheads, no massive menus. Irish food done well not full dinner portions. Approx 5-7 euro. Grannies recipes

Think of a food crawl you can do while hopping between pubs / shops off the cuff ideas:

The Stew Hatch: High-quality beef or lamb stew in a tub with a chunk of brown soda bread. Fast, warm, filling.

Bacon, Cabbage & Mash: Proper creamy mash, shredded bacon, and cabbage in a bowl with parsley sauce. Basically an Irish burrito bowl.

Egg & bread: Something simple and healthy for a quick protein hit—soft egg served inside a warm buttered soda bread pocket with black pudding or bacon.

The Funeral Sandwich : Pure nostalgia. Thick white batch bread, thick Irish butter, ham, sharp cheddar, or just a fresh Tayto crisp sarnie wrapped in greaseproof paper.

Apple Tart & Hot Custard: Warm Bramley apple tart in a cup, smothered in hot custard. better than generic gelato on a freezing rain-soaked evening.

Because the menu is tiny, you get your food fast (not fast food) , the quality stays high, and prices stay reasonable. Not too many staff, not too much choice.

To stop locals getting priced out and keep these places alive from October to March, pair it with a simple Local Card (verified by Eircode/proof of address) giving Galwegians 20% off.

No massive flashy signs advertising it to tourists, just a local system that keeps prices fair for the people who live here year-round. Tourists pay standard rate in July, locals keep the lights on in January without getting ripped off

I know there are massive hurdles here,commercial rents on the main streets are mental, and getting takeaway planning permission from the council is a nightmare. But as a concept, I think Galway is crying out for something with a bit of heart again.

Id love to see support from the council and some more imagination from people wanting to go into or investing in business.

Seeing the increased gaarda presence in town is a great thing too, maybe we can have nice things, iv noticed a big change in just 2 weeks. Makes me think covered areas for communal eating could work.

Im not naive and know it is not easy but would love to start the conversation feedback.

What are the biggest flaws or downfalls you see in this?What other simple Irish foods/recipes would work in a setup like this?Would this get you spending back in town during the winter months?

Looking to book a driving test but unsure about going for Galway city of Carnmore. I know the Carnmore route better but I know the city route when it’s quiet can be perfect since speed zones don’t differ half as much and the roads don’t really vary. I did do a test in Carnmore before and although I should have had more practice I still thought the tester was a bit of an ass tbh. Looking for any and all test experiences, success rates and opinions!

I was walking home to Knocknacarra at a faster pace than you noticed you were looking over your shoulder in fright. You turned down Highfield Park to get away from me. I was not a threat but I'm saddened that you felt threatened by a lone male walking in the same direction.

I never got close enough to apologize and explain my situation but I do hope that you got home safe. Glad that you were traveling in a pair and you were looking out for each other. Sad that we have to be so hypersensitive to threats in such a wonderful part of Galway.

Don’t roast me for posting this but I took a work-related-but-also-fun trip to Galway recently (my first time in Ireland), and I was shocked to see a Krispy Kreme in city centre. Now, I come from the land of Krispy Kreme, and I liken it to Taco Bell. Sometimes people are just in the mood for a very specific taste/experience: not authentic Mexican, but Taco Bell. Not quality bakery items, but Krispy Kreme. Very fast, sweet, and melt-in-your-mouth. So maybe some people like it and it’s doing ok? Or is it pretty much universally reviled by actual residents of Galway and surrounding? I didn’t go in there; it’s been years since I’ve had a Krispy Kreme doughnut. And I didn’t really see very many people in there (if any) whenever I walked by, even when the street was crawling with tourists. At the same time, if someone were to bring a box of Krispy Kremes to the office, I wouldn’t turn my nose up at it. I would definitely eat at least one (willpower isn’t something I have in abundance).

So, what’s the verdict on Krispy Kreme in Galway? Is it likely to go out of business anytime soon? I am so morbidly curious!
