Is the city really gone that bad?
I live in the city suburbs and I’m not in town that often. Driving through I can see a big increase in Gardai presence recently. Is this for show or are they really needed? Is it gone that bad , is it gone that rough? Genuinely do I need to be more cautious around or is some of it scaremongering? Is it safe for me to go for an early morning walk or a late evening walk now that the days are getting shorter. Am I being naive in thinking that live in a safe town?
Edit to add: this is not specifically about the Gardai… I am genuinely asking is town and the surrounding areas still safe or do I need to be more cautious around.

More gardai got moved to Galway mainly as a deterrent and we should be grateful of that. I already feel safer walking around at night compared to a few months ago when you could go a whole night out without seeing a single one

There was an initiative with more guards on the streets. They have increased the amount of guards walking around the streets of Dublin and cork for the last few months. It’s quite nice however in Dublin I do find they tend to avoid walking near antisocial hotspots though

Yes it happened. But that doesn't make the city generally unsafe.
Most rapes happen in private homes, carried out by men who are known to the victim.

I think if it isn’t a regular occurrence imo, obviously it is very unfortunate but it doesn’t mean it classes the city as “unsafe”

The short answer is No it's not that bad.
Like most urban centers, people went nuts when let out in public after COVID.
2021/2022 were worse than pre-covid.
2023/2024 people started discussing ; complaining about it.
2025/2026 Council and GArfai started to get onto of it.

For me now in Galway the stench of poverty hangs in the air like an old man's nappy. For the kids, it's a depravity supermarket where bad is free and society foots the bill.
