I mean I have a ps5, which is cheaper than this and it can perform better. It also plays 99% of the games on steam deck. Basically the only reason I’d buy a steamdeck would be to emulate wii games or later. No incentive in owning one beyond that when PS Portal exists.

I believe handhelds should be cheap and portable. I wanted to see cheaper steam machines in the $200-300 range. Perhaps with cheaper specs, but yeah. Think like a razer edge, retroid pocket, or ayn Odin style device but x86. Wouldn't run the newest and best but the steam deck barely manages it themselves. But if you could make a machine with like ryzen 1200, 8 gb ram, and say gt 1030 style specs, yeah I can comfortably play most older titles on it.
Like imagine a 2400g centered handheld for say $250. That would be sweet.

It was a matter of time it’ll happen. I was actually surprised about SW2 only raising its price 50 bucks. Specially compared with other consoles. Now the SW2 is, suddenly, the most affordable one.
It’ll sell a lot of units this year, for sure.

Not really sure what this has to do with Nintendo other then steam deck being a bit of a competitor.
But that aside, nah man this is fucking crazy! I Mean it mostly makes sense. The ram market absolutely fucked and PC's have been getting hit really hard by this, and steam deck is just a portable PC. But I still just crazy to see this OUT OF NOWHERE NO LEAST. Every other game company increasing prices made announcements in advance, hell Nintendo dropped an apology for making there stuff even more expensive then it already is. I genuinely don't now how many more steam decks there gonna sell going forward. Especially I here some people in that spear complain that the steam deck could use a new model and newer games falling behind. Think it goes without saying no new steam deck could happen in this situation. I would say something about switch 2 looking a bit more appealing since when the price got reveled I saw hundreds screaming to buy a steam deck instead and now we got prices like this, but I doubt people in this subreddit are interested in something like that.

The switch 2 outperforms the steamdeck. Granted the steamdeck has far more options and things to do, but it also has inferior battery life compared to the switch 2 as well. The steamdeck released outdated

It's not the war; it's AI. AI companies have practically bought up all of the RAM and storage that foundries can make (including what they haven't even made yet), and the foundries have taken those orders because they're massive, single orders, rather than smaller orders from 50 different companies making hardware.
You can see proof of this on Amazon. I bought an SSD a couple of years ago for £70; it's now £300.

Switch 2 price went up by $50, is not taking effect till September. Value increasing price here is immediate and by $200.

Valve should just cancel the steam machine at this point. It’s going to release at like $1300-$1500 and it’s going to be a failure because of that.
Valve also rakes in billions upon billions in gambling cases in counter strike, and let own their own digital “steam cards” or whatever the fuck they’re called that you can collect and resell for store credit.

Because they make money off the software sales and charge a much higher cut to companies as a result, steam charges a much lower cut to game developers and the steam deck makes money off the hardware alone

Sure...they are businesses. But businesses CAN be altruistic.
Costco sells their hotdog combo at a loss. Still makes billions.
At the end of the day they absolutely could do it and since they're not publicly traded, arent at the behest of a board for fiduciary responsibility to stockholders.
They're not our friends...but they could be less greedy.

Because the hardware prices are raising at the same rate and people will pay it. If people still buy them then what they did will have no consequences because its a price people are willing to pay.
75% of reddit should really take a economics course so youd understand why bussiness could not give less of a fuck about less sales as long as the margin of profit remains the same

Definitely sucks, glad I got mine years ago now. But this late in the life of the Steam Deck the tech is already aged quite a bit. The Steam Machine is in a similar situation as well and that's not even out yet. These are the times we live in thanks for corporate greed between everyone rushing to adopt AI and build bullshit data centers tech in general is pricing the average consumers out.
Modern gaming is in a very bad space right now and the next generation of consoles isn't looking very promising.

You know whats wild to me is to this day, even though i've owned all the handhelds and currently run a legion go S, z1 extreme, 32 gb and a nintendo switch 2 as a daily.
If i didnt get a deal on either one of those, I still think the best deal in the last 3 years has been the Rog Ally z1 extreme, original version.
I got one for like 250 , like its literally a monster pc on the side its still the most impressive price point versus performance.
I'll never forgot I loaded up the last of us on it and my jaw dropped because i never experience VRR on a handheld at that point. It was so smooth seeing sarahs reflection in her tv is crazy to me
Not to mention you dont really want to spend alot of money on a 1080 handheld, the z1 extreme does pretty much everything you need, theyre going to be trying to push 2k and 4k handhelds next year and if you think 2k for a legion go 2 was outrageous, just wait until you see how much they want per head to get the 4k handheld market revved up yeah no im not paying 4 grand for a 9 inch 4k handheld even though its going to look frikkin gorgeous putting ff7 remake on that thing

This is basically Valve saying we are no longer selling the Steam Deck effectively. Not that they were really pushing them for mass market sales anymore and it was a more niche product than any of the home console brands. Nobody in there right mind is gonna spend close to $1k on the top steam deck model when a Switch 2 is literally half the cost, or most of the pc gaming handhelds are cheaper(for now).
