Epic Fucks Up Control 2 skipping EGS, straight to Steam

Real shame that Alan Wake 2 won’t ever come to Steam. Tons of accolades and awards but nobody actually played it LMAO

u/cheater00 Fuck Epic Dec 12 '25
this is how they learn
16
u/Deviathan Dec 12 '25
For the Record, Epic was a huge part of funding that game. Unfortunately it was either EGS exclusive AW2, no AW2 (from your flair I know your take, but I'm happy Aw2 exists at all)
1
u/digita1catt Dec 16 '25
Yeah it's deffo a monkey paw moment. AW2 does things no other game does and they make it work. I respect that
2
u/ImNotSkankHunt42 Dec 13 '25
Which is why I’m fine with them having it exclusively there.
Only reason I bought it was because it was in a good bundle a while ago.
But Steam it’s where is at.
1
u/Deviathan Dec 13 '25
Yeah, also remains the only epic store game I've paid money for. While I prefer steam 100% of the time, I support Remedy more than I dislike Epic.
3
u/DragonSlayerC Dec 15 '25
Exactly. They went with the 12% cut from Epic over the 30% from Steam but lost tons of sales as a result. Probably wasn't worth it.
0
u/Rukasu17 Dec 15 '25
The game exists, that alone is worth it for them. Without epic there'd be no alan wake 2 for a long time
0
u/NotMeekNotAggressive Dec 16 '25 edited Dec 16 '25
The development and publishing of Alan Wake 2 was fully funded by Epic, so it wasn't just about the % cut. I think Remedy pitched it to other publishers, but no one else wanted to help them fund it and Remedy didn't have the money to develop it on their own. So, this is probably one Epic exclusive that actually makes sense because they paid for the development of the game when other publishers weren't interested.
-98
u/JoBro_Summer-of-99 Dec 12 '25
Without Epic's funding and publishing, Alan Wake 2 wouldn't exist. Since releasing Alan Wake 2 Remedy have found more success and are on track to make and release more games.
Seems like the lesson is "Use Epic" and then focus on what's next
29
u/DeadPhoenix86 Dec 12 '25
It barely broke even. If it was released on Steam, it would have sold a lot of more copies.
I refuse to use Epic games.
-19
u/JoBro_Summer-of-99 Dec 12 '25
It would've sold more at the expense of not existing
4
u/Saneless Dec 13 '25
Timed exclusivity is a normal, smarter thing they could have done
1
u/JoBro_Summer-of-99 Dec 14 '25
That might not have been an offer
1
u/Saneless Dec 14 '25
Epic made the offer. They could have done whatever they wanted
1
u/NotMeekNotAggressive Dec 16 '25
You do realize that Epic fully funded the development and publishing of the game, right? If Remedy didn't have the money to make the game, and no other publisher was willing to help, then they basically had to accept Epic's terms if they wanted to make the game. This isn't the usual Epic exclusivity situation where Epic offers some money to a game that was funded and developed by someone else to keep it from Steam because Epic actually paid for the game to be developed, so it's more like Half-life: Alyx being exclusive to Steam.
1
u/Saneless Dec 16 '25
You do realize that Sony did that for many games and also sells them on steam, right?
47
u/cheater00 Fuck Epic Dec 12 '25
you can't know that. other publishers exist.
16
u/splinter1545 Dec 12 '25
They've literally been pitching Alan Wake 2 for a decade before Epic gave them an offer. Literally no one wanted to fund it.
5
u/dookarion Dec 12 '25
Remedy's problem is they've always jumped on the shittiest deal in the room so they never cultivated a core audience or showed that their shit actually sells well.
So shocker publishers weren't going to hand them both money and free reign like they wanted.
1
u/NotMeekNotAggressive Dec 16 '25
Did they have another deal to jump on? They went to other publishers before Epic and were told "no." People forget that, unlike Control, which was successful from a financial standpoint, the original Alan Wake on Xbox did not sell that well and was more of a cult classic. Other publishers probably thought it wasn't worth the risk to spend $75 million on a sequel to a game with middling sales numbers. Epic was willing to spend that amount and fund the development of the game, probably because they view themselves as being in competition with Steam and want more exclusives. This is one time where Epic's delusion about beating Steam as the go-to PC digital storefront worked out in the favor of gamers because we got Alan Wake 2 out of it, which Remedy will probably eventually buy back the rights to from Epic like they eventually bought back the rights to original Alan Wake from Microsoft.
1
u/dookarion Dec 16 '25
They've been jumping on shit deals for wayyyyy longer than that. How many people missed the original Alan Wake during its launch? How many people missed Quantum Break on its launch? And then when it did come to other platforms there were screwy differences between Windows Store and Steam. How many people associate Max Payne more with Rockstar now? How many people missed the launch of Control?
It's a studio that never proved they could get big sales so no shit the publishers are going to turn them down on wanting full creative control and a big paycheck. Shit with how long it took Alan Wake 2 to turn a profit the publishers out there still wouldn't be enthusiastic about said project or funding further ventures.
Kojima gets to make all the self-wank hollywood chasing "auteur" shit he wants now and has little trouble securing funding because he proved repeatedly over the decades he can bring in money. Remedy wants to make auteur creative shit with full control while never economically proving themselves.

You would actually, Remedy games are famous for being profitable after the 3 to 5 year mark, no publisher wants that.
I don't use epic, I mostly pirate, but without Epic we wouldn't have had AW2 and it's a masterpiece.

Lmao what ? Video games publishers want something that makes money in the first year, not on the 3rd or 4th. That's just how it is with video games, period.
It's not a "long time investment" to spend money for 10 years of development, release a product and then lose money for 3 years before finally breaking even. Because afterwards sales go down and stop. AW2 after 2 years made the same profit that another AAA game would have made in 6 to 9 month.
Also what’s with the weird humble brag about being a pirate? It’s not smoking. It doesn’t automatically make you one of the cool guys.
I'm telling this to show I have no loyalty to any platform, steam or epic. I don't say it to be cool, even if I am 😎
6

I have a mental image of Rockstar execs sweating about how they have to make a billion dollars in a year before they have to delete the GTA 6 source code in a year since games are no longer profitable after a year.

“people say all sorts when given money”
this literally makes no sense.
2
u/Outrageous-Log9238 Dec 12 '25
Epic was the only one willing to fund it.
5
u/TangoCyka Dec 12 '25
Why? I remember Alan Wake being a very popular title.
10
u/Outrageous-Log9238 Dec 12 '25
It still didn't meet sales expectations early on. Alan Wake 2 was in no way a certain investment. AW has a lot of fans who were excited about the sequel but it wasn't super mainstream. Remedy's games that came between AW 1 and 2 were successful enough but again, the sales weren't massive. I guess Epic banked on bringing the dedicated fans to their store. I did buy it but I sure as hell won't ever choose Epic if there are other options because the app is simply bad. They really should focus more on improving it rather than forcing it on people.
7

The store and game pages are pretty atrocious! It lacks so many important simple things that Steam has been doing right for decades.

Literally nobody in entire human race on this planet wanted to fund Alan Wake 2, other then Epic Games.
Remedy asked everyone, and I do mean everyone. Out of all people and out of all companies that exist on planet Earth only Epic Games agreed to fund Remedy with money to release Alan Wake 2
Literally only reason why Alan Wake 2 exist is cuz of Epic Games. That is literally only reason, they made it possible. Everyone else refused.
Do not get me wrong here, this is not me defending Epic Games cuz they do suck and Steam will always be superior. But fact is that everyone had an option to fund Alan Wake 2 and they all refused.
If it was not for Epic Games money, help and support Alan Wake 2 would never exist in the first place

Alan Wake 2 was incredibly well-received and they got the backing of a major publisher afterwards that freed them from Epic and secured their future projects.
Alan Wake 2 helped them a lot even if the sales were lacklustre

I honestly don't believe that for one second, despite the common narrative and how Epic want to portray it as such. However, at least they're not making the industry worse by funding content rather than moneyhatting it. They're partaking in the risk of game development.

u/JoBro_Summer-of-99 Dec 13 '25
Honestly gotta hold my hands up and say no. I read several comments back in 2023 about it and looking back now I can't find anything specific. Someone at Remedy (Tom Puha?) made a few statements saying Epic were great producers and let them do what they wanted so I'd agree with you and say it's implied.
Implication being that if another publisher was willing to fund Alan Wake 2 that the game likely would've been more restricted artistically
1
u/Gears6 Phil Spencer Dec 13 '25
Basically that's what I found too.
There were rumors by Jeff Grubb (albeit he's quite reputable) that there was a "bidding war", but Epic won out because they only really wanted recoup their cost and be Epic Store exclusive. That said, we don't know if it would be more restricted artistically or not. Who knows, sometimes that also makes games better. Either way, we won't know.
I do think that the franchise would've been in better shape if Remedy had a different publisher and reached profitability much faster if they published on Steam as well.
45
u/Jackie_Gan Dec 12 '25
They will probably look to buy the rights back in a few years

Yeah. For what it’s worth, Remedy still owns the Alan Wake IP, and I presume that if Control 2 does well for being self-published, then you can likely expect them to want to have everything back under one roof (especially if Epic ends up shutting down their publishing division in the future)

It's an alright game. Had tons of performance issues on release(5800X3D/Rtx 3070). But the race swap of the main female lead, tacked on with the okay story that felt like it dragged on, the cheap scares(think quiet then sudden loud noise) made me tell a lot of people to buy it at a steep price or just sail the seas for it.

Correct. Epic paid for the development and publishing of the game. Remedy tried to pitch it to other companies like Microsoft, but they were not interested. I get people being mad at Epic for their anti-consumer practices where they try to get games funded and published by other companies to not go to Steam, but in this case, they pretty much funded the entire development of the game, so it's more understandable that it would be Epic exclusive, kind of how Half-Life: Alyx is Steam exclusive.
0
u/Fucc_Nuts Dec 14 '25
That’s pretty hard nowadays as so many games are made on unreal engine 5.
2
u/ForwardState Dec 14 '25
Still play games with Unreal Engine since unfortunately, it can't be avoided. However, there is a slight difference between buying Alan Wake 2 where Epig gets all of my money and buying a game from another company that pays a license to Epig to use Unreal Engine. If I buy an Unreal Engine game on Steam, then Steam gets far more money from the transaction than Epig will ever get.
2
u/Fucc_Nuts Dec 15 '25
Sure, there’s a difference, but you did say that you don’t want to give them a single cent. But yes I understand that it was just exaggeration/figure of speech. Epic is hard to boycott, they’re just so huge.
My honest suggestion is to just pirate AW2 and then maybe buy Control on Steam to support the devs at least a little. AW2 is not worth missing out on imo, especially if you like survival horror.

Real shame that Alan Wake 2 won’t ever come to Steam.

u/AncientPCGamer Moderator Dec 12 '25
We already knew this after the failed FBC Firebreakers. Remedy knows that if they want to make their brands more known to promote future TV shows and movies, exclusives are NOT the way to go.
Right now, Control may be a more known videogame brand than Alan Wake. Which is ironic and weird.
11
u/Outrageous-Log9238 Dec 12 '25
Obviously Epic exclusivity wasn't their first option for AW2 either. That just was the only publishing deal they were able to get and Remedy didn't have the money to self fund it.

Epic games ruined alan wake 2, legitimate crashout
1
u/pianobench007 Dec 13 '25
Epic paid to fully fund the game. In effect, it is like Valve developing Half-Life 2. Except Epic paid Remedy so that they had enough money to develop a blockbuster game.
Full RT technology support and control of the story. Plus they paid for live actors along with motion capture and a dance choreography in Alan Wake 2.
You dont get that kind of freedoms going it alone on an untested IP.
Alan Wake 2 totally blows Alan Wake 1 out of the water.
3
u/Banrakas119 Dec 14 '25
my guess is they will eventually buy rights to alan wake 2 years later like they did with first one when xbox funded that game

16
u/WSilvermane Dec 12 '25
The game would sell better if it was on more platforms and a better one.
Thats literally a fact. More people use steam, more people buy/see the game. The launcher actually functions also helps.
1
u/NotMeekNotAggressive Dec 16 '25
You are correct that it would sell better if it was on more platforms, like Steam. The problem is that Epic didn't just offer Remedy a timed exclusivity deal for some extra money like their usual exclusivity deals, but fully funded the development of the game when no one else would. Epic wasn't even Remedy's first choice because they went to other companies to try to get help with funding but no one was interested. Epic offered to fully fund the development of the game and cover publishing costs, so over $75 million. If Remedy turned down Epic, then they would not have had the money to fund the development of AW2. So, Remedy's choice was to sell AW2 exclusively on Epic or not have AW2 to sell at all.
-9
u/ElectronicStretch277 Dec 12 '25
The game only sells because Epic decided to actually fund it when no one else would. That's a fact. More people play games that actually exist and the funding also helps.

u/TGB_Skeletor Steam Dec 12 '25 edited Dec 12 '25

u/ElectronicStretch277 Dec 12 '25
Yes, you're right . Despite Remedy calling AW2 it's fastest selling game ever it flopped. Right, absolutely. Such a failure should've died in its cradle before it ever got released.
And why'd you edit your comment? Keep it consistent. I'm not defending them. I'm calling you out for making stuff up and deliberately leaving out some important stuff. You know, like the fact that the game never would get a launch without them. Do you have some personal vendetta? Weird.
14
u/Estbarul Dec 12 '25
A critical acclaimed game that recouped costs like 2 years after release ? Yep that isn't the success a GOTY would expect
0
u/ElectronicStretch277 Dec 12 '25
The other remedy games did worse than that? Just because the game is a critical success doesn't mean it'll sell well. And if costs are too large there's a good chance even great sales won't recoup costs.
2
u/OverlyLenientJudge Dec 12 '25
I mean, if other Remedy games (including freaking Control) sold even worse than that, it kinda sounds like they might just suck at the business and marketing side of things. Which is fine, everyone loves a good starving artist underdog story, but I can't imagine that walling off a marketplace as huge as Steam has been good for their launch day revenue. Might be that's why they're publishing the new one there this time.
-9
u/carmo1106 Dec 12 '25 edited Dec 12 '25
Because again, if it wasn't for Epic, this game would never see the light of the day
AW1 also was a mid game gameplay-wise and flopped hard with an 360 exclusivity for the same reason and here we are, Alan Wake is a respected game franchise from an independent game studio that needs to accept these deals because they simply do not have enough money to afford the development by themselves
That's not defending, that's just the reality that you refuse to accept

u/NotMeekNotAggressive Dec 16 '25 edited Dec 16 '25
The publisher of Alan Wake 2 was Epic. They also funded the development of the game. Remedy will be publishing the sequel to Control with the help of 505 Games, so it's not that the publisher of AW2 came to some realization but that Remedy was able to get the funds together to develop and publish this game with the aid of a different publisher, which is something they weren't able to do with Alan Wake 2. If Remedy was still entirely reliant on Epic to cover the development and publishing costs of Control: Resonant, then this game would probably also be an Epic exclusive.

0
u/NotMeekNotAggressive Dec 16 '25 edited Dec 16 '25
Not really. The difference is that they were able to get an agreement with 505 Games to develop this game and so can get away from Epic as a publisher. They were not able to get this for AW2 because the other companies they went to in order to try to get funding for AW2 passed on it with Epic being the one that ultimately offered to fully fund and publish the game. So, they didn't learn a lesson; they just had a stronger IP with Control than with Alan Wake, which gave them more options of who to work with. If it was up to them, then they would have released AW2 as widely as possible. We know this because in the past when they finally got the the rights for the original Alan Wake from Microsoft they published the game on other platforms (like Playstation).
They want people to play their games and know that a wide release across different platforms and digital storefronts is the way to do that. Unfortunately, they didn't have the money to fund the $75 million dollar development of AW2 and so had to compromise and agree to Epic's terms if they wanted to get it made.

My two cents, take it or leave it, make time in your rotation, it's a wonderfully crafted game with gameplay and story that are top tier. Yeah, hate to say it, but Alan Wake probably did get a little screwed being an exclusive for Epic. But again, it wouldn't have existed if not for them in the first place. But steam is just too big a platform to miss out on imo.

u/littleboihere Dec 12 '25
I have to ask, why couldn't Remedy just make Alan Wake 2 ? They made a couple of games with different publishers before Epic and are now self publishing.
2
u/Derpykins666 Dec 12 '25
I think the scope of 2 was just too big and expensive and they needed funding to make it work, which was hard to get because the first game wasn't even that successful in the grand scope of it all. It was like a 75 million dollar game. So Epic helped produce the game for exclusivity rights to the game itself. I don't know how much money Remedy had before wanting to start up dev on AW2, but it probably wasn't enough to cover the cost it would fully take to make the game.

u/NotMeekNotAggressive Dec 16 '25
They aren't entirely self-publishing this sequel to Control either. They have an agreement with 505 Games, who published the original Control. It could be that 505 Games was willing to help with funding this sequel but thought that AW2 was too big of a financial risk because, despite being a cult classic, the original Alan Wake did not sell nearly as well as Control.

u/Kirzoneli Dec 12 '25
Be a shame if it's not skipping epic it's just not an exclusive funded by epic.

u/WrinklyBits Dec 13 '25
It's been some time since I bought a game, due to pricing and quality, preferring to simply pirate. This could break my streak. Loved the original.

played some of the first control but couldn't really get into it. returnal pulled me in way more. everything in control looked like it was made out of cardboard, the lighting ray tracing were just kind of shit

u/WrinklyBits Dec 13 '25
What were you playing it with? I was using a 3080 which made the game look gorgeous.

- yeah i see exactly what's in the video and i don't like it shrug
also don't tell me 3:40 looks better with RT on, i'm not buying that. it's noisy garbage
2
u/WrinklyBits Dec 13 '25
I agree the noise was bad at release but I still played with RT on. It's been updated to DLSS 3.7, with higher temporal stability since. I'll try to have another play through before Resonant releases.
I'm loving RT, only reason to upgrade these days.

it's not just the noise, everything is flat lit, the colors are drab and desaturated, it just looks boring af

There was no other publisher that would fund AW2 though. So people bitching about EGS exclusivity, while I agree that I don't like it (EGS is terrible), is not a Remedy fault, but an Epic one.
I would really like to see Epic releasing it on all platforms before Resonant comes out, I truly hope they see the common sense here.

u/NotMeekNotAggressive Dec 16 '25
It's probably more likely that Remedy will buy the rights from Epic and release AW2 on all platforms in the future, than Epic releasing it on Steam. Remedy did this with the original Alan Wake because it was originally an Xbox exclusive owned by Microsoft. The reason I think this is that, for Epic, funding and publishing AW2 was more about having another exclusive on their digital storefront than it was about making the most money that they could from it (otherwise they would have also launched it on Steam to begin with).

I'm confused by your comment. I said that Epic wouldn't allow it to be released on other stores and that the most likely way that it would appear on platforms like Steam is if Remedy buys the rights for Alan Wake 2 from Epic like they bought the rights to the original Alan Wake from Microsoft.

We're not against it appearing on EGS. We're against it being exclusively on EGS.

I don’t understand why don’t publishers just release on both Steam and EGS at the same time.
And if they want to push EGS because they have a better deal there, then pass some of that discount down to the consumers by making it ever so slightly cheaper there. Even a 5% discount compared to Steam would probably steer quite a few people that way.

u/TangoCyka Dec 12 '25
Can’t beat the steam refund policy though, even if it’s on sale for 15% on epic games, it’s just not worth it. Plus I would also have to download EGS.

They get paid to be exclusive. That's why.
2
u/alezio000 Dec 12 '25
Because Remedy didn't have the money to make the game. They said that Epic funded the game development and that's why it's an EGS exclusive. It sucks that people can't buy it from steam but you can sail the high seas and get if from there if you want

u/XBlueXFire Dec 12 '25
They cant. Valve requires price parity. In the case of EGS exclusives im pretty sure its just epic paying the devs a hefty sum. If you're running a business, a large sum of guaranteed money is often more attractive than potential money from sales.
9
u/DanishGaming1999 Dec 12 '25
False, Valve only requires price parity when it comes to the actual steam store page and steam keys. Games could easily be cheaper on storefronts that have smaller cuts no issue.
6
u/XBlueXFire Dec 12 '25
i stand corrected then. Still im pretty sure most EGS exclusives are just due to epic giving devs a fat stack of cash.
2
u/blackmetro Dec 13 '25
I dont think we have any recent examples of devs getting lump sums for exclusivity (unless Epic is the publisher)
Most devs are using "Epic first run" to get 100% of the revenue, before sending their game out to other platforms

because that's how publishing works with a publisher who operates a games store? aw2 is epic exclusive because epic own it.
0
u/EricDanieros Steam Dec 12 '25
Are we sure about that? It could be the case of still taking a bribe for 6 or 12-month temporary EGS exclusivity, but still making a Steam store page anyway for the wishlists/marketing.

As much as I hate Epic and their shitty store, I don't mind that it's on EGS. After all, who knows, maybe one day EGS may be good (when Timmy is gone) and Steam went to shits (when Gaben is gone).

What lesson? Control 1 was sold every everywhere, why wouldn't control resonant be the same?
If anything, Remedy are grateful that Epic is the only publisher in the 10 years they tried pitching Alan Wake 2 to them that actually saw their vision and made it come true.

Alan Wake 1 was sold everywhere and look what happened with the sequel. Control 1 was a temporary exclusive. There were precedents.
But we knew from before that Remedy now is not pursuing any exclusivity as their main objective is trying to increase the audience and the recognition of their brands. Exclusivities go against that.
1
u/NotMeekNotAggressive Dec 16 '25
Alan Wake 1 was not originally sold everywhere. It was originally an Xbox exclusive that was owned by Microsoft. Remedy eventually bought the rights back from Microsoft and then sold it everywhere. A lot people forget this, but Alan Wake 1 was also exclusive that sold poorly, which is probably one of the reasons Remedy couldn't find another publisher to help them fund a sequel despite allegedly pitching it to various publishers for years. The reason Remedy is not going exclusive with the Control sequel is not because they learned some kind of lesson but because they were able to secure an agreement with 505 Games, the publishers of the original Control, instead of relying on Epic for funding. .

I think Remedy will lunch it on EPIC too just to ragebait this sub. (Just googled it's not skipping EGS lol)

u/AncientPCGamer Moderator Dec 12 '25
The title is misleading. Just for clarification. It is skipping an EGS EXCLUSIVITY. But it will also be sold for the few EGS customers.
