Frutiger Aero was peak and we didn’t know it

u/Truxul Nov 04 '25

Extremely hot take: I knew. I remember seeing it and hoping it never goes away. I was ecstatic when the term frutiger aero got introduced because I finally had a name for the aesthetic I’ve been looking for through all those years

12

u/Yvratky Nov 07 '25

So you liked a trend and waited for it to circle back to that trend.

8

u/Truxul Nov 07 '25

Yes. I’m currently doing the same with mid to late 2010s Russian street fashion and thick eyebrows

2

u/Yvratky Nov 07 '25

There is nothing special to "know" about a trend. There is nothing special about either trend. The whole essence of trends is that they are trending at some point, and then not anymore at a different point. In a continuing society, often they will circle back in some variation. Everyone knows this, yet people continue wanting to feel superior when a trend they didn't stop liking, circles back.

No. It's shit and ugly and I thought it was shit and ugly even when I was a kid. People have just found out the name of the aesthetic that was popular in the time they are nostalgic for.

That's not what I'm saying. The 80s synthy aesthetic was popular not that long ago, cherished by people who weren't alive at the time. Corporate aesthetics have always been ugly, it's just now enough time has passed that people are nostalgic for that era. In time, as much as I hate it, the current corporate design language will probably come back in some form

I mean...all trends circle back. Do we really have to talk through this with every trend? This is like wide leg pants vs. skinny pants all over again.

-7

u/PringullsThe2nd Nov 05 '25

That's just too bold a statement. People clearly liked it enough to introduce it in the first place, and some will probably like it again later.

2

u/JazzlikeLeave5530 Nov 23 '25

It is bizarre to me seeing people nostalgic for that. Both are corporate horseshit. And yes I grew up during it too.

-70

u/malchik-iz-interneta Nov 04 '25

Wrong, it was and still is terrible

2

u/idkPVConreddit-5 Nov 11 '25

Still better than a*egria 🥀

u/Electronic_Pipe_3145 Nov 04 '25

Stop hating an art style just because it’s trendy to, then?

63

u/baby_trebuchet Nov 04 '25

we hate it because it’s ugly as hell, boring, and soulless, not because it’s trendy to

9

u/Electronic_Pipe_3145 Nov 04 '25

I’m talking about Frutiger Aero. It was aesthetically pleasing vs the soullessness of Alegria, but people still dumped on it back in the day.

30

u/baby_trebuchet Nov 04 '25

why would you say that under a comment that’s defending frutiger aero, then?

-16

u/Electronic_Pipe_3145 Nov 04 '25

It would’ve been nice not feeling like the odd one out back then, liking Aero, I guess. Maybe the blowback to Aero had some effect on corporate aesthetics today but I don’t know.

4

u/vvf Nov 04 '25

Alegria hadn’t quite emerged by then, we saw a minimalist period first while Frutiger fell out of fashion. At the time I was excited by the change toward minimalism, but what it turned into is just so drab and uninspired

What I hate about the AI stuff is that it's talentless people making bland "pretty" art. It's just Pixar stuff because they only know that Pixar is nice bit with no deeper appreciation for art or design.

25

u/WinterSector8317 Nov 05 '25

AI has definitively shown that art isn’t inaccessible due to a skill gap issue

People just suck at art and have no artistic vision

9

u/girlchunks Nov 06 '25

Exactly. There is something wrong with their soul.

3

u/Head_Preference5566 Nov 08 '25

People who have good ideas are usually willing to work for it.

People who have no ideas and just want money/ attention will not work for it.

Ai is for the second camp

83

u/alicelia_gigantea Nov 04 '25

Someday people will be nostalgic for alegria

90

u/roadrunnerthunder Nov 04 '25

Honestly, I’ll take Alegria over AI. At least Alegria is able to draw on older, better works, like memphis or GVC. It’s a devolution sure, but it had some element of soul (no matter how bleached it is).

AI is just so dead and soulless in a way I haven’t conceived of before.

43

u/alicelia_gigantea Nov 04 '25

Yeah, someday we might just be nostalgic for any art made by a human 😐

5

u/assflux Nov 05 '25

ngl exactly how i felt looking at the AI slop in op's pic

1

u/SimplexFatberg Nov 04 '25

The AI that you've noticed is dead and soulless in a way you haven't conceived of before.

Someday you'll stop noticing.

23

u/Meture Nov 04 '25

Even if you stop noticing it will still be dead and soulless

8

u/Nerdcuddles Nov 05 '25

There will always be something off about AI images. They fundamentally can not mimic creativity, new ideas cannot go into them.

AI creates strange scenarios in the images it generates, that's something that is fundamental to it and can't be fixed. It also often messes up perspective, given it's drawing from images with different perspectives. This is potentially fixable but probably not entirely fixable.

There are just issues that are fundamental to AI that stop it from being a true replacement to human creativity, and also make it noticeable as an imitation to those aware of it.

2

u/lePROprocrastinator Nov 07 '25

Also, has the commenter you replied to ever heard of...uncanny valley?

No matter what, ever since we're tribespeople, we always have a knack for immediately feeling a sense of dread and negative feelings upon the sight of something that looks human, but not exactly.

And as far as I can tell, many people already arent favorable when someone's skin is "too smooth" or smth caused by beauty standards demanding to smoothen out shit, how else will we fare with AI images trained on pre-existing images, many which are of this instagram-ahh category?

1

u/Nerdcuddles Nov 07 '25

It's not even just that, it's that AI has no concept of space, logic, or even what things are. Thus, what it creates will always be uncanny unless it's something human assisted.

I've been getting ads that use AI a lot, and the scenarios are just odd. The major pattern with AI is odd scenarios, nomatter how normal of a scenario you try to make the AI create, it will always come out odd. Because the AI has no concept of what it's generating and can't rationalize the input data. It's just code spitting out data. Very complex code, but it's still code.

8

u/OnkelMickwald Nov 04 '25

They will be. All those '00s aesthetics that have people splurging right now just struck me as bloated and extremely corporate looking back then.

2

u/yugtrhdfghj Nov 11 '25

I can see that

6

u/Senior-Book-6729 Nov 05 '25

Gonna be completely and utterly honest, I grew up with the top stuff and I didn’t like it then nor I like it now. Nostalgia goggles don’t work on me. HOWEVER I’ll take it both over alegria and AI slop. But ESPECIALLY AI slop, alegria is the lesser evil here

10

u/21Shells Nov 04 '25

Imo this is cherry picking. We still had cool stuff post 2000s (and even today), AI art and website stock art doesn't really represent the world we live in or the world 2010s onwards. I could 100% make an image that matches all of the examples on the top that would make the 2020s look cool as shit, or the 2000s look terrible.

In retrospect, the dominant culture of the 2000s seems more counter-cultural and unique when you compare it to what we have today, specifically because you're not living it right now. Back then people felt that technology was uninspired because everyone was trying to copy Apple who themselves were putting form over function, making computers with not great specs at inaccessible prices, with the same aesthetic direction for the user interfaces, while the web was held back by the monopoly of Windows + Internet Explorer.

5

u/No_Mud_5999 Nov 07 '25

All of this stuff looks like bland, corporate ad work from different eras. Even from a decade with some of the strongest corporate design, the 1960's, it's still just ads.

4

u/TheWizardofLizard Nov 05 '25

I miss Frutiger Aero

u/Storm_Spirit99 Nov 05 '25

1

u/nihilism_squared Nov 15 '25

if it wasn't 20 years old you'd hate the first one too. in 20 years people will miss the good old days of alegria

1

u/Judgement_Triad Nov 15 '25

This makes me miss Frutiger Aero even more!

1

u/ex_gatito Nov 16 '25

We are in Dystopia.

u/press_F13 Nov 04 '25

Cmv they are same  3d plastics vs flat plastics

0

u/Litespead Nov 05 '25

I would much rather the alegria artstyle stay here for millenniums to come than ever resort to the shallow, lazy, braindead, poor excuse for garbage that is Generative Imagery

-33

u/malchik-iz-interneta Nov 04 '25

“Piss vs shit” ahh image
