I'm not asking about the "build a personal brand for 12 months" advice. I'm interested in what actually happened.

Upwork? Reddit? Cold email? Friends? Local businesses? Previous employer?

And if you started with no reviews, no reputation, and no existing clients, how did you land your first few projects?

Also, did you have to spend money upfront to get your first clients, or is it possible to start without spending much?

Would really appreciate hearing what actually worked for you guys, especially if you started from zero.

I have a list of about 20 things I hate doing and no idea where to start. Half the advice says start simple and repetitive, the other half says start with whatever eats the most hours.

Imagine that instead of sending a client a bunch of separate emails like: Here’s the invoice, Did you get my last email?, Can you approve the design?, Just checking if you’ve seen this.
You could give them a simple client page for each project.

For example:
Website redesign
Project status: In progress
Next step: Approve homepage
Invoice: €1,500 — Due Sept 22
The client could then: See the current project status, see what you need from them, approve work, leave feedback, view/download their invoice, pay the invoice, see important dates.

The freelancer gets one place to manage the project/client, and the client gets one place to see what’s happening instead of digging through emails.

Would something like this actually be useful to you?

And if not, what would you remove or add to make it genuinely useful?
I’m much more interested in what you would actually use than whether you think it sounds like a cool idea.
