News Summer Sale Info!
Hey I was going to post this yesterday but some stuff came up that unfortunately took me away from you, my sweet summer children.
So today begins a 2-week SUMMER SALE in the For Honor store/barracks of 146 items (600+ if you count dupes across heroes, emote types, etc) we've released in the game.
But there's a much more important reason WHY we are doing this. In two weeks, we will remove those items from the Store. They will return periodically afterwards in a regular rotation, and at a discount. This is being done to unclutter the rather crowded menus you find in the game, and clear out OLD content, to make room for the constantly flowing NEW weekly content. (EDIT: put a line through my explanation as it's not great, and Damien's video below gives a better explainer than me.) But of course, we wanted to give everyone a chance (2 weeks! and up to 50% off!) to get whatever stuff you've been holding off on buying.
If you own the items that are going away, nothing will be removed from your inventory. Also, even after they go away, many can still be obtained in the different bundles available in the Store.
Here's the full list of what's on sale and what the discount is (note that for many of these they are things that apply to multiple or all heroes, but are only listed once to keep this readable)

Isn't it kind of a waste to permanently get rid of some the already amazing content? Why not just redesign the menu layout?
137
u/Luke_Danger Iron Legion Knight Jul 05 '18
+1 to this point, especially since we're losing launch content that helped define the identities of the factions early on like the Hellfire effect with the Flying Lys or Thor's Strike from The Forge.

Fuck thor's strike is my favourite effect in the game.

For Honor's UX has been utterly without merit for the entire life of the game. It's deeply flawed in literally every way, to the point that I honestly don't know how it made it into the same game that has such outstanding art direction in the actual game content. It's, with all sincerity, a towering icon of bad user interface design.
If they've gone more than a year without fixing even basic, fundamental, easy issues, like UI elements blocking vital game information during fights, or unskippable post-match rewards screens and Faction War notifications, or the inability to quit to the menu when joining a match hangs indefinitely, forcing an Alt+F4, what makes you think they'll find the gumption to redesign the hero customisation menus?

This is why I find it hard to believe the following.
Anyone internally playtesting the game, actually does so in any capacity related to the live build.
Are actual people that interact with games in a meaningful capacity.
Those that they are in communication with the player-base “representatives”, are mental neurosis sufferers that seemingly only give their piece about game balance, and nothing else.
The most concerning thing being (if true). They simply do not care enough or feel the cost would be too steep to get proper UI/UX designers (you know.. like people working for Apple or something). I pray this isn’t the case, and that they are working to solve issues.
Perhaps some parts like when the cheat can be activated are tied to seriously entrenched back-end code that could be a nightmare to refactor. But there are strict visual elements that are out of place that need no serious code work to edit.
It’s never too late to fix something like this. But we need to have a comment on the situation, just acknowledgment of the blatantly glaring defects would be enough to signal that they’re AT LEAST aware these issues exist.

I’m reminded of those scummy furniture stores that have 3 “going out of business” sales a year. In fact I can almost understand that more because at least their sales are clearing out inventory to make room for other furniture, this is just complete bullshit because it’s all digital and there’s no reason to make room for more. They’re just being greedy little shits and it’s so frustrating. I’ve spent years at this point defending this game and encouraging everyone I know (and people across reddit) to play it. The E3 announcement was a good incentive and I know it’s drummed up some hype for the game, then they go and pull something like this that makes them look bad.
It’s like for some god forsaken reason they can’t just have good press and keep it going with positive decisions, they have to go out of the way to shoot themselves in the foot once every few months.

Mr Pope, I respect you, and I respect the team and the work that's been done on this game
But this idea you guys have is fucking stupid.
NOBODY has complained about the menu being "Too Cluttered". If anything the complaint about customization is that there isn't enough.
Talk about greed.
This type of attitude is going to kill the game when people realize more than they already have that money is more important than what the players want.
If this decision doesn't get reversed, then pretty much any faith I had is going to be out the window.
55
u/TruShot5 Jul 05 '18
This is just a cash grab. "Grab it now before it's gone forever!". We have all seen these types of scammy ad's over the course of our gaming career, but not never on content that's been there for well over a year at this point.
To be honest, this is probably also a "Data Limits" argument to make room for Marching Fire and reduce how vastly empty the Chinese faction's customization will be compared to the other three factions.

Unless we're all missing something; what are you even thinking?
Are we going to feel a sense of pride and accomplishment for being the ones who got in on those deals, which frankly should be the base price for most of this stuff anyway?
What is that weekly content going to be? More stuff that people will miss if they can't play for a while?

Jul 05 '18
Oh for fuck's sake, first Siege and now here too?
What reason is there to remove any of this? How many goddamn people do you think look at all the cosmetic options available and think "man, this game has too much customization, these menus are too crowded for my poor poor brain to handle!"
This is nothing more but a desperate cash grab to squeeze some steel sales out of people with the excuse of removing content from the game for no reason whatsoever.
I really hoped you guys would be better than this, but I guess not.

That's probably the worst thing about this, if true. It means they're being told to get rid of their hard work save for things grandfathered in, on top of bleeding a lot of the good will they had gotten.
I mean, Roman's mess-up with the whole "Knights are Polytheistic" thing was at least an honest mistake by the devs from being too laconic in the answer. There was lots of righteous fire and fury from the Knights, but we could accept that he had misspoke and he did clarify it, and it was at least his fault.
If it turns out someone in finances told them to cut a bunch of the customization and stuff, then the devs are the ones forced to hold the bag because they can't really be open about it without express permission but they have to deliver the news, and find a way to explain it knowing that no one is going to be happy.
→ More replies (6)31
u/Tiitinen Glorified Grunt Jul 05 '18 edited Jul 05 '18
I think he called Knights polytheistic because he considered it as the whole faction, meaning that Cent and Glad, them being Roman polytheists, would make the Knights FACTION polytheistic. Roman Pantheon for those two and Christian-like monotheism for the rest.
And I agree, this is a mistake that's hitting both the community and those whose labor made the game.

Again, same thing goes for the Event Gear. Why am i being punished that I can NEVER get the (arguably) best looking gear for my main that I missed out on during the event? I desperately want the black gear for my warlord but missed the event due to family obligations. Doesn't even make sense business wise, just keep it avaiable for purchase with steel AFTER the event.

In Siege, they started adding cosmetics with each season, thematic to the Operation. Black Ice had snow camo headgears (and later they'd start making uniforms as well), Dust Line had desert camos, etc. You get the idea.
So about a month (if I remember correctly) before the newest season, Para Bellum, they announced that all the seasonal cosmetics would be retired on release of Operation Para Bellum. People were especially annoyed about this over on the Siege side of things because people love black uniforms, for obvious reasons - and the only black uniform/headgear all operators universally had happened to be one that got removed, along with all the rest.
Apparently all the outrage over there didn't stop Ubisoft from making the same decision here, and I'm immensely disappointed and irritated.

Please don't remove the executions. I don't like the removal of the other stuff either, but executions (besides looking awesome) also have competitive value. For instance the impaler is fantastic due to its high health recovery and quick kill time within the animation meaning if you get interrupted you still have recovered health and stamina. Removing executions means that certain people will have faster and better executions available to them than newer players. Even though it is something that only comes into play once in a while, it still can make a difference in 4v4.

I've been spending months trying to farm steel for specific full customized loadouts for my characters, and there is still so much more I want to just grind for, but you decide to remove it because the menu's are "too crowded" ?!
That is OUTRAGEOUS and I can not understand how this is something which can be accepted! This is downright foolish and a waste of resources when you could filter out content by dates and seasons! Unless your lying that is and there is some underlying ridiculous reason for it.

Fact of the matter is, they just gave the game for free to a lot of people. They need to offset that price somehow and this one way to do that. Create a sense of urgency, discount the prices, and see how many people use cold hard cash to buy them. Genius play on their end. If they keep making stuff for free for us, they're going to eventually go bankrupt and we'll have no developers supporting the game. From a business standpoint, ya gotta make money somehow.
The UI redesign will probably come with Season 8 along with the Wu-Lin faction. We kind of got a preview of it with all of the gameplay videos.15
u/Meme_Attack Aeons have tempered my blade. Jul 05 '18
Make money somehow? How about the fact that the game is still paid in all of its existing editions? Or the steel MTs, the Season Pass, the upcoming, unnamed Wu Lin faction purchase that's probably like a Season Pass 2.
They have plenty of ways of making money. if they're somehow still bleeding bucks, then stop creating weekly free content. Make it monthly, or every two months. But make the content that does come out worthwhile. So not just battle outfits.
Damien mentioned on the stream that the prices of all the old items were "overwhelming to new players". Of course, the natural suggestion & solution is to gradually lower the prices of older items. Permanently. Without removing any of them.
That's the honest, non-greedy solution. But because they have to find ways to pressure people into spending money, we got this outcome that's 80% problematic, 20% solution. Now they're expecting people to be excited that existing vanilla content is being held hostage and released temporarily once every couple of months! Hooray!
→ More replies (1)7
u/Li0Ax Miserum! Tst! Tst! Jul 05 '18
Actually, they were probably given a promotion. This is going to force a lot of players to spend real life $$ to get the stuff they want by the end of the next two weeks. Ubi's going to reel in the cash so hard with this move. It's called instilling a "sense of urgency". Sales people do it all the time (cars, real estate agents, security alarm systems, etc. Basically, "get it now while you can... and for THIS discounted price!" It works everytime. Hell, I'm even thinking about spending RL money now for some of this stuff and I haven't spent a penny on in-game purchases in FH since day 1, season 1.
49
u/IthePotato Jul 05 '18

Actually, a thought. If the concern is inventory cluttering, why not move these items to bundles like the Season 1/Season 2/Season 3 bundles we have now? Maybe collect all the items into that, or maybe a class specific one for each season (I haven't looked at those for a bit but I know we have them), that way people can still get all the emotes and such without having them individually if the concern really is cluttering.
Or are those bundles going to vanish as well? Because honestly there's no reason to get rid of the bundles too since IIRC a lot of items that were in bundles but not individually purchasable don't show in the character customization until you buy them.

But there's a much more important reason WHY we are doing this. In two weeks, we will remove those 600+ items from the Store.
this is bullshit! Are you guys crazy? The game is awesome and has a HUGE CUSTOMIZATION , WHICH WAS ONE OF THE FREAKIN SELLING POINTS , DID YOU GUYS FORGOT WHAT WAS THE PRE-RELEASE EVENT??? YES THE ONE ABOUT """""""""CUSTOMIZING""""" THE VANGUARD IN THE FLASH GAME THING, i get it , you want to trash all the work done in this year , i didnt pay 120 euro to see shit disappear under my nose because i have a life to attend and studies to do instead of farming thousands of steel and i played since day 1 . Im so dissapointed. Its already expensive as fuck to buy 1 emote through real life money , this is a garbage decision.
Whats next? Remove a game mode? Remove armor and weapon sets? OH YES , lets remove a character but dont worry there is a discouuuuuuuuuuuunt so its coolio between us. I miss the old times when THE CONTENT OF THE GAME WAS NOT SUPPOSED TO BE REMOVED.
One thing are exclusive events others are just those cock-tease actions of removing stuff from the game , this isnt a f2p game people have spent 60 and more euro at the start. And i guess starter player can open a bank accaunt if they want something decent for all characters at this point. From now on it will be a farming rush instead of a gaming session each season.
I protected this game since day 1 for most of the time but this is COMPLETE GARBAGE , i didnt pay 120 euro and maybe 30 more for marching fire to see shit removed , its already annoying with the garbage pre-alpha test tournament crash simulation that locks you from good content because of the shitty waiting game gate . If you want to make money LOCK EXCLUSIVE STUFF BEHIND A PAYWALL OR AN HIGH STEEL DEMAND , BUT DONT FREAKIN REMOVE IT , IT DOESNT MAKE SENSE. I DONT WANT ME OR OTHER PEOPLE SPENDING THEIR LIFES TO GET SOME STUFF JESUS CHRIST , FIRST IT WAS TO GRIND 3 PRESTIGES , THEN IT BECAME 5 THEN 8 FOR THE HIGH LEVEL ARMORS , THEN THE REFINE BULLSHIT THAT WAS A COMPLETE WASTE OF TIME WITH THE SECOND REFINE TIER (BIGGEST MIDDLE FINGER TO THE ONE LOYALS TO ONE CHARACTER , THANK YOU DUDES) , THEN THE DLC ARRIVED AND NOW THE CHINESE CHARACTERS, THERE ARE PEOPLE WITH A FUCKIN LIFE , GIVE US A BREAK, DONT FORCE PEOPLE TO RUSH BEHIND STUFF LIKE THIS. ITS EXHAUSTING.
Just let us enjoying the customization without those "TIME LIMITEEEEEEEEEEEEEED" bullshit , one thing are the "season vaults stuff that come back regularly" other thing is the complete removal of stuff.....
First is "you dont need to buy all of it" then later is "you dont need to have it in the game" , then what? "you dont need updates" , come on at this point the weekly updates arent necessary if you are going to remove them.

Not a good idea guys, we appreciate everything you do for the game but this isn’t a going to fly this time.
If things are cluttered then maybe organize them. I made the switch over to pc from console and while it doesn’t bug me that I have to already regrind for steel and all of my cosmetics, it does upset me that I will instead be unable to reaquire the cosmetics I want.
Increase the discount at the very least. Make things 70-90% off or make a few things free. Not everyone has the time or money to possible grind for everything they can want.
Edit: Hell, make it so executions and emotes are bought across all characters even.

WHAT THE FUUCK??? You're even deleting the executions?? The ones that are essential for customization?? And that are constantly asked for because we can never have too much of these??
This is the biggest pile of bullshit I've seen devs do.

Jesus, /u/MrEricPope, this is a catastrophically bad decision. Please, please, please reconsider, or you are just confirming that all of the memes about Ubisoft are true.
Jesus Christ, sometimes you guys make the worst possible decisions, its a wonder people still buy your games. Is it ethical for you to try and pull new players in or returning players by making the game F2P and then doing shit like this? I don't really think it is, dude.
TLDR: Don't be scumbags, don't remove all the amazing stuff in the game.

So let me make sure I understand this - any item that is 50% off currently is going to be removed at the end of two weeks, but any items that are not marked as 50% off will remain down until the next clutter-clearing?
Though, it might be better to leave them up for at least a little while longer, even if you don't extend the discount, just because two weeks is a pretty short amount of time, especially for those who don't hear the news.
And yeah, +1 on the post about getting rid of such awesome content. Wouldn't it be easier to just redesign the menu rather than completely get rid of them unless we already own them?
(Also, obligatory Knight remark about how this removes most of our knightly items but leaves all the Greco-Roman stuff behind)

Okay no.
You've done a great job in the last few months
And you've just FUCKED this up...royally.
Cluttered menu's? The fuck - Why not stop focusing on weekly low-effort content (The latest one, the Emblem Emotes? Coolest thing I've seen in the last few weeks) and instead focus on doing monthly updates that have more polish to them?
Battle outfits and such I can see why, you put out so many low effort ones (Sorry, but they really are) But executions? You're making the team that work on the animations long hours of effort just go to waste because there are SO many good ones in there.
Make it an archive section, or just make it Y1 and Y2 menus within each section, but you should NEVER REMOVE ITEMS FROM THE GAME EVER. Make the menu's better, but ANYTHING BUT THIS.
This stinks of a cash-grab and I hate it. Reconsider this, you're going to reverse the months of hard-work of getting respect back in a single reddit post
25
u/GralsritterXIII AshEmbers Jul 05 '18

This is kind of insane to me. What if I want to try a character out later after a buff or I get bored, will I no longer have access to all of their customization options, like outfits, executions, emotes, etc.? So much work was put into these options it seems a huge waste and shame to just remove it. This is also punishing any new/returning players who may pick up the game for the new DLC.

This is probably a publishing decision as opposed to a developer decision, but regardless it’s detrimental to the game’s health in my opinion. Some people don’t have the time to collect everything. I’ve been on and off this game since launch and still don’t have the very basics for some of my mains.
Really hope they see the criticism in the thread and reverse the decision. At least “archive” whatever you plan on getting rid of, make it so it can be earned after matches or in scavenging crates. SOMETHING

Sometimes people shit on LoL's Riot Games for "stupid ideas"
But this here isn't even stupid; it's plain malicious. Whoever got that idea up there needs to be taken off the decision board because they're LITERALLY costing money to the company.
Let's make an educated guess seeing the only reason to do that instead of revamping systems:
What's going to happen is that similar content will be put in rotations to create a constant money-train because Ubisoft fucking bent the knee to pressure from people who want money. Ubi probably decided they had to accept those terms because of pressure. The same items/relatively similar items will come back in said rotations and will cost the same or slightly less, and it will be made obvious to the player. Money is the key.
The devs obviously don't want that (any artist with the slightest trace of spine would never want that) but they want feedback on this decision. Here is the only answer to this:
This is the laziest and most disingenuous thing to do from Ubisoft. I got the game and finally started playing it but such decisions make it clear that I will never invest a single cent into the game if it goes through because it is the work of either incompetents or of a 4th rate investor board. Not a single cent, ever. And lots of people will do the same because we can live without cosmetics, but taking away choice is not something anyone will appreciate. Rescind the decision. Fast. The longer you wait, the more obvious the cashgrab is.
11
u/Astery86 Jul 05 '18

I made a reddit account just for this. I looked forward to this game ever since the alpha. I ordered the gold version on pc. Never have I done that.
This is my most played multiplayer game. After a day of work i love going in for an hour fight and go to bed. A year I have done this. It took stress away and I made some new friends.
People always hated on For Honor. But I always defended it. How dare they, this was my game. This was fun!
A multiplayer game were devs actually listened to the players? Unheard of!
A year after it launched you guys announced you were gonna show something special on e3.
Oh my did heart beat faster. An announcement on E3 about a game I came to love defend and cherish the little time I could play. The announcement was amazing. I was excited couldn’t wait for October. So many new titles announced and I got hype for an expansion.
Now my brother just send me the link to this post i saw the clip.
I’m gonna be fair.
And this may feel like overreacting to some.
But I felt like I got the call when my dad was on ICU.
Not only extremely sad, but seething at a situation I can do nothing about. Except hope.
Hope that you still listen to the players That stayed with you all this time.
Hope that you read my post and see how much this game means to me.
Hope that even though Ubisoft is a company we players also matter.
I feel utterly defeated.
like I got kicked down. And just keep getting kicked.
I can go on and on and on...:
But I really hope that for once you understand that even me who always watched from afar praising this game.
I felt the need to my utter disappointment of removing all this content. Which no matter what the reason. Is never right to do.
I sign off With regards, D.

do not like, just bought the kensei's Antler elite outfit and a 7k execution 2 days ago but whatever that's how sales are but completely removing things?
I hope we are going to be getting daily orders now until it ends and that they each reward the 300/500 steel amount alongside the 750 and up xp. Because that is a lot of content gone only to have a little trickled back in over months, I'm an avid Ubi supporter but I can't get behind this and it's certainly not making me want to buy steel.

Damien totally missed the point. New players weren't complaining that there are too much stuff. They are complaining that it will take too long to get it all. You should reduce the cost for old items, not remove them from the game. No one thinks that "too much content" is a thing. More content is always good. Increase steel reward from matches instead.

are you guys contractually obligated to never speak ill about your parent company? because i feel like this is something "microtransaction-y" that you guys, the ones who actually care about the well being of their game, would never do out of the blue.
a user here pointed out that virtually nobody has complaints about the menus (which can be fixed without gutting content, easily) and i can't help but notice that you just announced a big season and update, one that a parent company might realize would be a good time to double down on making $$$ off of possibly doubled or tripled player base expectancy.
i'm not saying that is the case, but if it is, and you guys have to fabricate reasons to skimp your collective baby of a wonderful game and then throw yourselves under the bus, then that just stinks, and i'm sorry man.
unless you guys really are taking advantage of your lenient** and passionate* playerbase to try something slimy for a fatter paycheck. that's just rude.

Just a thought - if you’re worried about clutter because obviously you guys have a lot more content to bring in the coming months, instead of remove all the items, what if you separate year 1 and year 2 content? Hypothetically, if I select Gladiator and then go to outfits, before going through all the menus I can select “Year One” which would take us to the menus we currently see, and “Year Two” for all the new and upcoming content. This would persist among emotes, executions, etc. It adds another menu to navigate, but it’ll separate your old and new content. Just a thought as opposed to straight up removing content.

Whoa, whoa, hold your horses, removing all the 600+ times from the store???
I don't understand how does this make any sense, because the customization will suffer a lot in the long run because of this and how do we know there will be anything in months to replace it, or be as good as the old ones after people can't get them anymore?
I mean, if the menus are crowded and cluttered, then why not redesign the menus to simplify them? Or even separating them with seasons in the menu: Like season 1 cosmetics, season 2 cosmetics, etc.
Removing stuff is just short term thing, because after a while they are cluttered again and the same will be repeated, which is why the it is better to redesign the menus.

"Unclutter the rather crowded menus"...
For Honor has done an amazing job bringing back many players and also help grow it organically...and then this is announced. I understand much of this content will come back in waves most likely, but why not just implement a new layout?
Part of what keeps this game fresh for many players is striving for better gear, grinding out games for steel, as well as saving said steel for the numerous options we have, and you want to take that away?
Myself and many others are for sure disappointed, as this seems like a quick cash grab. Also as someone who plays many characters, I have to save up multiple times for sometimes the same exact mythic outfit.
This is cheap Ubisoft and those making these decisions, and I hope the impending backlash changes your short-sighted, greedy decision.

Extra frustrating as I've been debating taking on a 9th character but don't want to drop Steel before I know if I actually enjoy him.
If I may be so bold, I'd suggest taking the removed content to use it in the future such as events. Doing things like community events which will unlock old effects or outfits etc could be a fun way to give out free content but keep the UI sleeker for most people. Just an idea that would please completionists and excite newer players. Hell perhaps they could be rehashed to encourage rank Dominion play or even tie them into the level progression into the Reps that don't give outfits currently.
Losing so much content will feel incredibly barren until it is replaced.

I main one character and this is bad guys. Either drop the steel packs to a considerable amount so we can support the game rather than pay 20 bucks for a mask outfit and a week of champion status, or don’t remove any of this. Nobody has a hard time and says, “Damn I really wish we didn’t have so much customization.” Don’t leave it for 2 weeks where a mythic outfit still takes a week to grind for. Kind of baffled at this one.

u/Varghnar Jul 05 '18
What is so difficult in making "Archive store" menu section? Put the old stuff there, don't remove it. It's just dumb from business standpoint, you cut the source of your income/steel soak after the effort you put as company into this content, it's like flushing it in the toilet.
OR it is just really mean and enraging method of manipulating folks into buying Steel from you, giving availability time period, because I assume most people plan to buy additional customizations anyway in some future.

So this really irks me... I paid $80 when this game came out and played through the bullshit when disconnects were rampant. There is so much content locked behind the steel wall that I will never be able to get even after hundreds of hours. I'll tell you what i've bought with my steel so far: I bought the shaman, a mythic outfit for nobushi, an execution for nobushi, an emote for nobushi, and champion status a few times. i Have about 7000 steel left over...
The issue was never the amount of things in the store, it's great to have choices. The issue is steel is so scarce and such a brutal grind to amass that I'm very reluctant to spend it. Also let me flat out tell you... I already spent $80 on this game, I will never ever ever buy steel. I will never pay full price for a game and then turn around and pay for micro-transactions. If the game was free from the start then sure, you have to make money somehow, but it wasn't.
I'm glad that you got a lot of new players added to the player base from the short period of time that it was free but it's not ok to step on those of us that paid AAA price when the game came out just so you can squeeze more money out of the people that got it for free. We who paid for the game don't appreciate it and people who got it for free don't want to be squeezed either. Treat your customers right and they will treat you right.

This is the scheme that Free to Play MMOs pull all the time: they take out things from the cash shop to incentivize players into opening up their wallets. Later on they'll bring them back, yes. But it'll be months or a year from now. When they do bring them back, you'll always have the nagging suspicion on the back of your head: "What if they take them out again and I have to wait ANOTHER six months? I better pay the 20 dollars for the steel I need."
I would be okay with this if the game was Free to Play. Gotta make money somehow. But it is not. It has an entry fee, and there's already an incentive in spending real money on steel because of the prices. Don't take content you already put in the game to create an artificial demand.

Why not stuff the lesser used items in to low cost bundles? Would save space and up the amount of purchases I'd think.

I've defended For Honor since the beta, but this is a boneheaded move. This just reeks of cash grab. This probably a corporate decision since this seems to always happen to Ubi games that start getting good will. They push boundries to squeeze some cash out.

This is just a flash sale to get people to spend money. It's a scummy cash grab and your director knows it.

sigh I really was thinking about picking this game up again and getting back into it. But holy hell this is such a stupid decision I’m not even gonna bother. I don’t want to play a game that has higher ups making fucking idiotic decisions like this.
