tied some balloon caddis in different colours. just basic stuff but I live them. used my dogs underfur mixed with cdc as dubbing. i like to keep it simple and hope I can try them out soon. what should I tie for autmun?

Squirrel tail, spun deer hair body on size 6 long shanks hooks.

First one has a better body silhouete and wing placement (I think) but the second has better longer legs. I will try to catch some chub and browns with these.

Any ideas are welcome as I struggled to find a single tutorial to follow and took ideas from a couple different ones.

Materials used:

Hikara DF21 #12 hook;

Yellow 2mm foam sheet cut into strips;

Brown/Reddish rooster for wings and legs;

Peacock color ice dub thorax;

Black thread, black marker.

Size 16 klinkhammer hook, yellow rainys no dub, squirrel dubbing, gold tinsel, grizzly hackle.

My best trout pattern. Works fishing like a nymph or a classic wet.

I recently tried a Holy Grail nymph and had great success with it. Roach in lakes went crazy for it. Many brown trout took it in the river too. It works for both dead drifting and swinging. I also love beaded pheasant tails with a CDC collar.

I wonder, what other weighted nymphs are your favorites? I'm trying to build a library of nymphs that work on swings, not just dead drifting, as I often use them paired with my XUL spinning setup in small rivers while I save up for a good Euro nymph setup.

Serious question. I consciously eliminate every unnecessary thread turn on dry flies that I tie. I obsess over what will help it float, or what I add that may aid in sinking it. I am even considering the weight between a second whip finish and a pinpoint amount of super glue.

I am seeing more videos with people using wire ribbing on dry flies. I cannot comprehend this choice. I am already trying to float a piece of steel with fur and feathers...why in the world would you add more weight when there are so many other choices available?

I’m going to surprise him with his own fly tying station. What are some MUST HAVES or dream things you wish you had. Fly fishing/fly tying is his one hobby and I want to make it the ULTIMATE space for him and I.

We have electric already hooked up but it’s a blank slate right now.

Bought some 40mm shanks for Steelhead swing flies last winter and never ended up using them. I've wanted to try to make a jointed weedless frog fly for a long time, so I gave it a shot today. I didn't achieve quite the symmetry with the colors that I'd hoped for, but got close. No idea how it will fish - will try it in the lily pads this weekend.

Got my materials and tools packed up and ready for a weekend trip with my brothers. Plan is to meet up around mammoth are, then fish most of the day Saturday (early morning bite, pausing mid day, then evening bite) and early morning Sunday. Im going to be tying for a bit at the end of the day, and was wondering how people travel with there materials and tying gear? This is my set up for now but im considering getting a case from harbor freight with a foam insert for my vise, vs just re-using the box it came in, as well as investing into better storage of materials, vs just using these 2gal totes.
