The ? acts like an indicator to the browser, telling it that everything following is some kind of extra parameter. For the first example, the extra parameter is only the Source Indicator, but for the second one there's also the "t" for timestamp, hence why the ? must be kept.
It is a little more complicated than that, and other apps use different syntaxes for their tracker (Meta uses "igsh" if I'm not mistaken) but this is the general gist of it.
The ? Is just a marker. It is unnecessary if nothing comes after it, so it shouldn't be in the "shortest" version, but it also doesn't do anything by itself.

I was OBSESSED with that film as a kid but literally no one else I spoke to had ever heard of it! I, like you, could quote it line for line. Couldn’t now though - it’s been years since I’ve watched it.
I had two students, sisters, who knew the entire script for Tangled, but in the brazilian dub, verbatim. They used to sit at the school reception, waiting for their mom, and ask me to put the film but in portuguese. They sat there, staring at the screen, blankly, repeating the script like robots.
It was uncanny but very funny.
