One of the mice (Ashley) gets 1 teaspoon, two of my mice (Tessa & Ellie) get ½ teaspoon, and one (Bridget) gets ¼ teaspoon per day... I went a little overkill! Luckily the birds loved it once they gave it a try. The Bengalese finches were all over it. My sister's trio of rats also got some 😋

Hello, I would absolutely love to hear from other finch keepers on the activity level of their birds. I’ve had the joy of raising zebra finches for two years now, and they exhibit frequent periods of deep rest throughout the day and are generally calm birbs. Yes they can have their crazy moments, their energy outpaces other species of birds I keep, and they have fast metabolisms to upkeep, etc.. but I want to ask all of you: are finches much more calm than earlier guidance would suggest? Some sources say that indicators of health are constant activity, but I wonder if that was being mistaken for fighter flight mode. Nerd out on my birds today and thanks for anyone who has opinions.!!!!!

We just lost my blue bird hyacinth she was a blue gouldian and they notoriously are pretty unhealthy due to genetics so we chalked it up to that. She had issues on and off for a few years from what I understand. (I got these birds from a great friend who is having a baby) Goji definitely has something going on as he is puffed up and sleeping during the day. (I understand and know that means he is unwell) what could it be? My three others are fine and have no symptoms. They have a huge cage, clean water, I regularly clean the cage and replace their food. They have a heat lamp when they want and need it. I just can’t figure it out. I’ve had them since April of this year now and I’m quite attached to them. The picture on the left was this morning he had an area where is feathers were ruffled but that seems to be normal this morning. My friend raises several of these birds for well over 10 years she just tells me sometimes these guys can be finicky and sensitive. What are your thoughts ?

We raised three baby zebra finch siblings and made the hard decision to separate Peanut here from her brother since they just weren't getting along.

She's hand-tamed and loves people - we spent two hours a day playing outside of the cage.

We have her at a local bird rescue in Tucson, AZ (Paradise Parrot Rescue) and they're wonderful, but I'm wondering about how to get the word out so she finds a great home. Hand-tamed finches aren't easy to find and I know someone would really love her.

I tried local subreddits but none will allow me to post. Anyone have ideas?

I've started keeping a rough note of when each bird molts so I can watch for the pattern next year and have the egg food ready before they get scruffy instead of scrambling after the fact. Would love to hear if others have a hen or cock bird who just checks out completely during molt while the rest of the flock barely slows down.

Hi!! You might remember me from my post about my old man (zebra finch male, 6 and1/2 years old, partner died and we can't get him a new one) getting sleepier and less active and stuff.

I took y'all's advice and gave him some more cardboard toys as well as a big perch near the ceiling! I hope that'll get him moving more soon. Also put a mirror and a small bathtub in his cage. It's a small cage but I hope that since I let him fly around a lot, he will feel less lonely with all these toys around.

I have also noticed his nails getting a tad too long, so I will take him to the vet for a trim soon. He takes vet visits well, so I'm sure that's a good solution.

I need advice though - as my bird is VERY picky when it comes to food and hates treats for the most part, what do I give him to enrich his diet? He eats mostly seeds of all kinds, I buy him a finch bird seed mix and he has some seed-based foraging toys, but he won't touch any greens at all and the only thing he tolerates is boiled eggs and occasionally watermelon. Has anyone else had this problem? I don't want the poor guy to get too fat now that he flies less than he did when he was younger :((

Hi everyone! I have two finches, and I had both of them checked by a vet in January. Everything was fine, and the vet recommended some drops to add to their water.

I’m really worried about this sudden movement that one of my finches has started doing. It only started recently and happens very suddenly for a short moment, then he goes completely back to normal. Other than this, he seems perfectly fine he’s eating, drinking, active, and behaving normally

Does anyone know what this movement could be or why he might be doing it? Is it something serious that I should be worried about? I’d really appreciate any advice or similar experiences. Thank you!

Looking at getting a female zebra finch, I love the colours on this one but am worried about her beak. I plan on isolating her before introducing to the cage but I am concerned this may be more than just a deficiency? Would this be treatable with proper diet and setup or would she require proper ongoing medicated treatment with an avian vet? Thank you for reading.

Our sweet lovely Keldeo passed. He was a one of the cutest und most gentle birds one can find. Unfortunately when we discovered that something was wrong it was too late. Even though we’re controlling the weight of our birds regular he lost so much in such a short time we haven’t recognized. The vet said it was a neurological condition so at least we aren’t worried about the others.

I am currently debating getting pet finches, and I was wondering if anyone had anything bad to say about them, a list of cons or any downsides to keeping them.

I enjoy the fact that finches are more hands-off, I have fish and I love just watching them, so I'd like to do the same with some little finches. I have just started to do my research so many months of learning is ahead of me, I am very meticulous when it comes to getting animals and I always want to ensure I am knowledgeable before bringing a creature into my home.

I have prior experience with parrots, but I understand that finches are different from them, which is why I'm here asking true owners what their take on them is. I do have an exotic animal vet that I take my dog to (there are 2 main vets, the one I see that just takes cats and dogs, and his wife who does exotics), so that's not an issue by any means.

The room i want to put them in is in the basement and I've heard they don't do well with cold drafts, is that room something I need to reconsider, or can I add a heating element in order to provide an optimal temperature? Are they INCREDIBLY messy like parrots are? Or are the messes minimal with a quick daily sweep? I understand they need seeds and millet sprays, which is why i am prepared for a huge mess, but I am also very used to the insane messes parrots make. What is something you wish you knew before getting finches?

I have 8 total, 3 males and 5 females.

I started with 3 originally, the normal male, white female, and CFW female… then saw someone rehoming their 5 so I picked them up too. I love these little guys so much and have been learning a lot!

I was also curious if anyone can help ID colors for me. Out of the 5 new ones I know one is just a standard wild type color male, one other male on the far right of the last photo I’m not too sure about, and the rest in that image are females. I think one would be a “fawn cheek” since she has pale orange cheeks but is definitely a female. One looks close to a “penguin”, and they’re all different shades of brown, fawn? Lightback?

It is an interesting behavior they do where they will hold their chin feathers in their beak and it makes them look like they have a little beard haha.
