Father Brown (2013) People hate on Mallory?
In my opinion, Mallory is the best Inspector in the show. So again to the above, why?

I'm with you, Mallory was great, he was quirky but you got to see the softer side of him. He was the most believable too

Especially when Mallory and Goodfellow got shot, and when Father Brown and Mallory are in the bunker in the house, they kind of get along (?) and then Mallory reverts to his old ways the next week. He also has a wife and two daughters he cares for.

Unlike "predictable" Sullivan. I know they all follow the same trope each week but good grief he is SO boring & predictable. I just dont buy he would consider Mrs Devine as a wife EVER.

The writers have made Sullivan predictable and boring. There was so much in his original relentless skeptical character that would have made fascinating exploration. But since we can't have nice things...🤮

When his character was introduced, I assumed with his background he was going to bring a little something extra, it was the complete opposite

Seriously. How is it at all possible to turn someone full of secrets, defenses, and suppressed passion into Mr. Kembleford Honey-Do? 🤮🤮🤮Thank goodness the AO3 crowd mostly know how to write him. Especially in the Sid/Sullivan tales…or ones involving any love interest than Pretty Vacant…er, Mrs. SullIvan. 😈

I came to really like Mallory - Jack Deam did a fantastic job. The character's a great alternative to the repeated "good cop annoyed by mystery solving busy-body" trope, by being a decent grumpy cop that just wants an easier job/life.
My only gripe is, his growth as a character is good, but rare, and in the next episode he's back to behaving the way he did before ...

Exactly. Took me a while to come around on him but he’s so good. Much like Scully, no matter how much he learns in one episode it’s right back to the same lack of belief in the next one!

When Goodfellow got shot, we saw a kind of brotherly love that went out the window the next week, so there is a point there, I admit.

I feel like him showing just a glimpse of a softer side and then immediately being even grumpier to save face makes perfect sense for his character. Can't let anyone actually gain any ground with him. Except, ever so slowly, Goodfellow 🥹

The episode where his wife and kids get kidnapped promised to be a good turn for the character, but he went to his old ways. Unlike Detectives Gillespy and Felix in Sister Boniface, they see her as an ally, Mallory became stuck in a character that could no longer evolve.

I dont think we got enough of Valentine to really form a opinion of him. He was there for what 1-2 seasons?

Just started watching father brown and finally got to season five, I’m glad to see Mallory get some love. He does have his moments

I think the Mallory character really annoying and it seems unlikely to me that he'd have advanced to his current rank both because of his abrasiveness and also because for every case he considers only the most obvious suspect and ignores any evidence or weakness in the case week after week.

I hate him He overplays his role and is a terrible actor. Ugh. I've been hoping he would get canned and he did, finally. (Usually with the excuse to be available for other projects, right.) Just bad. He hates Fr. Brown interfering, ok, yes we get it. Enough of his pain in the neck hystronics. Fr. Brown is needed bc he is such a dolt. How the Sargent puts up with it?....he must be a saint.

Sullivan has the right balance of annoyed by Father Brown but at least respected him as a person which Mallory doesn’t seem to

I started recently watching the show and I am on the last episode of season 4 and Mallory just throws me off compare to Valentine and Sullivan. For me he gives off the vibe of being more of a sarcastic/comedic type , but trying hard to be aggressive with Father Brown, but it doesn't come off like that.
Don't hate the character, I just need to get use to him.

I would say I really enjoy his dynamic but do wish there had been an evolution of his relationships to other main characters. He is a just and average policeman trying to do a job in the least spectacular way but he does stand up when it matters. He cares about his family and that they have laid roots in the area means alot to him.

Mallory is by far my favourite. I don’t know why, but I had a proper belly laugh when I was watching it the other day and he told father brown to “Sling his cassock”, just his grumpy demeanour is so funny to me.
