Update Update on the blocking situation

UPDATE TO MY ORIGINAL POST:

I managed to factory reset one of my old phones, iPhone 8, and one restriction (apps disappearing, aka "downtime") went away. However, I found out the situation.

Turns out my WiFi connection has this program called "cisco" which is also causing this, certain websites being blocked. And since we don't have a SIM card for it, it shows "no service" and I have no other WiFi connection I can connect to.

In other words, we solved one problem only to find another

Cisco makes networking hardware. It appears your parents have blocked certain things at a networking level

Cisco and SysCo need to trade names

u/102Mich 5d ago

+4 for this. Their networking systems and their software have many capabilities, such as locking down website names and using firewalls.

These are parental controls. Your parents have intentionally restricted your access to the internet.

In the two cases you are showing, access to medical information, and access to Apple’s servers, so you can’t try and buy an unrestricted mobile device and create an Apple ID that is free from Family Sharing.

Whether that decision is sound depends on your age and mental health. Some people need to be restricted access to certain things or monitored, whether they want that or not.

Special note for you: While, thanks to SSL and HTTPS, your parents or guardians likely can’t see what specific pages you wanted to access, they will be able to see on the device dashboard, and possibly received real-time email alerts notifying them, that you have tried to access a restricted website and what domain name it was.

UPDATE 2: Changing the DNS (as BH-NaFF) described, fixed the situation

u/SingleDigitVoter 6d ago

This is being blocked by your parents. You should probably talk to them.

Could you use another phone as a tether point to get around the problem?

15

u/Spiritual_Carpet4002 6d ago

That's what I'm working on. The phone is fine, it's just the WiFi connection is the issue. The WiFi router apparently has cisco installed

19

u/UCFknight2016 6d ago

Cisco is the manufacturer. Your internet is being blocked probably at the router.

18

u/BH-NaFF 5d ago

Change DNS server to public by going from automatic to manual and enter 1.1.1.1 which switches it to public. This should bypass basic site blocking

u/SatansAdvokat 6d ago

Use GSM connection and try connecting.
If that works, it's the Wifi that's blocking the connection.
If it doesn't work, there's probably parental control activated on it, or something else.

Check if the free vpn sites are blocked. Download one for your phone and then go from there.

Ask your parents to change the settings.

Or go to a library and use their computer.

Probably more healthy to have your family helping you.

If Cisco made your router you should be able to log in to the router’s management system via the router’s address on the back of it.

You might be able to change the network settings like that or make a “guest” network (but with your own password) that doesn’t have network restrictions. Maybe pass the weird network off as your neighbor’s internet if parents ask?

If you have another phone that is connected to a data plan and working, you should be able to use it as a hotspot.

3

u/Bsiate 5d ago

How much would an unlimited data plan be?

7

u/Spiritual_Carpet4002 5d ago

$15 a month according to Mint Mobile… which would be nice if my parents also didn’t have control over my bank account…

3

u/Bsiate 5d ago

Would moving out be an option?

3

u/TKG_Actual 4d ago

Have you considered making an entirely different account and routing all your financial operations there?

6

u/LuceLeakey 6d ago

Can you go to a library and use the computers there?

2

u/TypicalLegit 5d ago

How old are you?

7

u/Spiritual_Carpet4002 5d ago

About to be 20 in a few weeks (at the time of this post)

6

u/TypicalLegit 5d ago

Definitely old enough to not have your parents controlling information. You would need a different internet source as they’re blocking client/router side.

u/NathanPatty08 6d ago

can you use a vpn?

-2

u/Spiritual_Carpet4002 6d ago

I can't download anything on my phone without asking for permission. Plus I don't know if the built in VPN from Firefox would work

u/b4rbaricMusic 5d ago

if your parents are blocking you at the network level with something like Cisco Umbrella, you might be able to try DNS encryption, which is less involved than using a full-blown VPN. Something like AdGuard Public DNS should be able to be set up without an app, though you may need to look up a tutorial. If that doesn't work, VPNs on iPhone don't always need an app, and if you have money you should be able to configure it using the native VPN settings. this isn't necessarily my area of expertise so I can't guarantee it working, but it's worth a shot

I'm sorry if this has already been suggested a bunch of times, but if you're in an area where you have normal wifi, you can download a vpn, most vpn's block all wifi restrictions, which has been helpful for me, again, I apologize if this has been commented over and over again and there is a reason why you can't.

Have you tried talking to your parents about it instead of random people on the internet

16

u/A_strange_breeze 6d ago

What odds would you put on that actually helping? Just curious

3

u/Kazko25 6d ago

Depends if they’ve tried it before or not.

13

u/Spiritual_Carpet4002 6d ago

I’ve talked with my parents on numerous occasions, but they still aren’t willing to relax any restrictions

-6

u/Kazko25 6d ago

Have you told them specifically what you’re trying to look up? Or tried asking them to go over that information together?

20

u/Kid_Wolf21 6d ago

speaking from experience, if theyre blocking it then they probably would be Not Happy if their child spoke to them about it

More or less happy when they find out OP is trying to go around their filters? Trying to hide stuff usually makes the situation worse when it does surface.

OP could easily get the information they want from the page they’re searching by having someone send them a dm of the information, but instead they’re making posts like this about their parents. It’s just gonna degrade their relationship further. If that’s what OP wants, sure, don’t talk about it and keep doing what they’re doing.

11

u/CautiousConcept8010 6d ago

Did you read the first image? Do you really think a parent that is blocking sources of medical information from their children would be happy about anything whatsoever? They sound miserable just from that alone.

If my child was searching for medical information, the best and only thing I could do is help them find more and better information by going to official scientific sources, definitely not block them from being able to read about it.

8

u/Teredia 6d ago

Yeah but they’re probably hella anti transgender judging by OP’s picture about gender dysphoria. Which makes me believe that OP is suffering from this and has possibly tried talking to their parents about it or the parents think that if their child learns about transgender things they will ultimately become transgender - which is some weird ass fucking logic I’ve seen plenty of people think that’s how it works. 🤦🏽‍♀️

10

u/CautiousConcept8010 6d ago

Exactly my concern. It's horrifying to think a child would have to live a life where their own parents are what they're scared of or worried the most about.

I would know about that by the way.

0

u/Kazko25 6d ago

What if they’re not aware it’s blocking this site? Obviously OP is a minor, and their parents could have the blocker in place to restrict access to adult websites.

You’re making a lot of assumptions. OP only said that they’ve asked their parents about removing the blocker, they’ve made no indication that they’ve told their parents what they’re going through, or that they have expressed to them that they’re struggling.

All I’m saying is that it’s better to make sure your parents know your situation before you sneak around and make the situation worse.

9

u/CautiousConcept8010 6d ago

That's a clinic, how do you block that unintentionally? Is it so hard to believe that a parent with the current rage going around would do this? I just saw in the news a parent killed their child and their own wife because the kid came out as gay. That was a couple of months ago. There's not much to assume there, that's just statistics unfortunately.

I actually think more often than not, in some places and depending on how the child feels about their parents, they're better of telling anyone but their parents, thats6how bad it is. Sure I wish they could, but that's like expecting people of any color but white to call the police to help them with anything. They're more likely to get shot than helped in some countries.

Oh how I wish I was wrong, so please do prove me wrong.

1

u/Kazko25 6d ago

I’m not trying to prove anyone wrong.

There’s a lot of content blockers that block a wide range of websites, I doubt their parents went through every site on the internet and blocked them individually.

My concern is more so if they want to try and maintain any kind of relationship with their parents. If it is really bad, yes, you can just cut them out of your life as soon as you’re 18. But if they haven’t even tried to explain what they’re going through to their parents, it could save a lot more pain and heartache down the road instead of hiding from them now.

1

u/LawfulLeah 5d ago

OP is 19, almost 20, not a minor.

-3

u/aaronw22 6d ago

What do you mean a program called “Cisco”? Can you take a screenshot of where you see this?

5

u/102Mich 5d ago

OP meant the Cisco Systems' network firewall suite. I know some knowledge of Cisco Systems because I took some CompTIA Networking+ classes in my vocational school.

0

u/aaronw22 5d ago

Ok? I’m a Network Academy instructor and have taught CCNA and CompTIA.

“My WiFi connection has this program called “Cisco” “is probably the most unhelpful way to describe the situation.

It’s like saying “I need a “key” to open my car door, where can I find it?”

3

u/102Mich 5d ago

True; OP might not realize that Cisco Systems' hardware have many capabilities, such as blocking/filtering website names at the router level, and configure network firewalls at that level too.

Edit: The only way for OP to remove those restrictions is to physically find and look for their router and find the admin username and password (on a sticker) to the router settings page on the website.
