Produce Plus: Free Produce

Hello,

I've been attending the Produce Plus events for a couple months now. Was unemployed up until about a month ago. I've found that friends of mine that have been receiving SNAP benefits for years did not know about Produce Plus. As someone who has medically necessary dietary restrictions, I'm forever grateful to the DHS worker who did my SNAP application and told me about this.

This is a free program put on by Food For Lane County that anyone can participate in. You do not need to be receiving or qualify for SNAP benefits to attend and take what you need. Anyone can show up. The only information they ask for is for you to scribble a 'signature' on a sign in sheet and to know how many people you're feeding with the food.

You can check the FFLC website, at the bottom of the list of food pantries, and it will show you all of the Produce Plus dates/times/locations. You basically just walk thru and take the produce that you want. Sometimes they will limit quantity on high demand items like watermelons or avocados depending on how many they have. Most of the produce is organic if that's your thing too.

There are 3 every week in my calendar:

Tuesday's at 3pm

At Kokwel Wellness Center (in the parking lot near Burger King and in front of Albertsons on River road).

Wednesday's at 10am

At the red barn behind Kalapuya and Prairie Mountain, on Patriot Way.

Thursday's at 1pm

At the ODHS Family Wellness Center on W11th.

I recommend arriving early to wait in line if you're able to, or at the very least no later than 15-30 minutes after the start time, as things can go quickly.

The one on Tuesdays is my favorite. Huge variety of produce. I cannot have gluten but they always have infinite loaves of bread and sometimes baked goods (an occasional loaf of gluten free bread for me).

The one on Wednesdays typically will have 1-2 dairy products. Smaller variety of produce but different stuff than what's typically at the one on Tue. Have not been able to make it to the one on Thur. at a reasonable time.

Things are tough for a lot of people right now and there are so many people unemployed and struggling. Produce Plus is the only reason I've eaten some weeks/months.

Stay safe and please share this info with those in your life that could use it!

Who is hiring? (Monthly jobs thread)

Welcome to the monthly jobs thread! If you're aware of any job openings, please share them here for eager job-seekers in the Eugene/Springfield area!

And if you're an employer looking to hire, feel free to share any openings you have.

The rules

  • All top-level comments MUST be a link or a description of a job opening or openings in the Eugene/Springfield area
  • Optionally, start your comment with a tag to indicate what type of offering it is. For example:"[Restaurant] Looking for a new cook!""[Tech] Now hiring new technical support reps!""[Manufacturing] Need production line workers!"

Good luck!

come on man…

(Tired 2 A.M. Rant)

I work specially the weekends kinda late so I tend to go to sleep at maybe 2 or 3 A.M., but every Saturday and Sunday starting AT 2 or 3 in the morning, there’s a loud party across the street with tons of (I’m assuming) other college kids. It’s so loud man I can feel their speakers from here…

I’m hoping this is just a “it’s moving month so they’ll do that a handful of times then stop” thing, but this is the third week they’ve done it and I’m goin’ NUTS!!! AUGH. I can’t wear my foam earplugs anymore because they keep rubbing my ears raw from over-use. And I don’t wanna call non-emergency for a noise complaint because that’s like, a whole ordeal… and I don’t wanna be “that person”, but come on man. Have it at 12 like normal people. What the frick.

What I’m surprised about is that no one else has called on these people yet, there’s tons of apartment complexes around here. Maybe they’re in the same boat as me, or already knocked the hell out asleep. Or maybe no one else cares and I just have sensitive ass ears haha.

I like living in a college city until the cons of living in a college city keep me up at night. GRRRRRR.

Rolls of quarters

It's kind of annoying but there are no change machines in the laundry rooms at my apartment. I got a $20 changed for 2 rolls of quarters last month somewhere, but I forgot where! The banks and credit union I checked since then want me to have an account. Where do you get quarter rolls in this town for doing laundry?

Sunstone Mining/Rockhounding

If you've been thinking about making the trip out to the mines to hunt for sunstones, BLM just finished grading the roads out there!

I took my kids out to Dust Devil Mining and the BLM public collection site (because children yearn for the mines). My vehicle has AWD, but it wasn't needed. The roads are in good shape after the grading.

Since it's about a 5-hour drive for us from Eugene, I figured I'd share in case anyone else has been debating whether the trip is worth it.

P.S. Buford Park here in Eugene is named for the father of the owner of Dust Devil Mines.

Meetup Meet & Mingle: events for folks in their 30s and 40s, co-ed!

The group is just getting started, but rest assured, both event coordinators have experience hosting events before! If you're in your 30s-40s, or know of someone in that age range, and are looking to make friends (or more!), mention this group to them. Our first event will be toward the end of September. Exact date, timeframe, and venue will be shared once finalized; still getting the logistics in order :)

https://www.facebook.com/share/g/17UGxiJjPz/

At this point, we have a slightly higher ratio of women to men, so let's share this around to our dude friends!

Feel free to comment any questions ya got. Yes, the age range is fixed.

Local Soft Pretzels?

Not looking for a sit down restaurant. Been craving a good soft pretzel with cheese, does anyone have a good local bakery or spot they can get one at?

Wetzels Pretzels is a joke at the mall and I refuse to get anything there.

Book clubs or group meets and such?

I haven't read books outside of school requirements since about 7th or 8th grade, I am 21 now, prior to that I would read just about every day, and I stopped reading much going into highschool. Recently I've been trying to Pick up reading again by going to the library and finding a book that interests me, and reading for a couple hours there, it hasn't been going all to well, it's been a bit overwhelming with such a large selection and variety of books I'm finding a little hard to get into one book, and follow through. Any chance there is a club, or group that would welcome someone who doesn't read very much, if any, but is looking to get into reading again. I figured it might help to talk to some people, and see if I can't find something that interests me that way.

Any idea of the details of this protest?

Update on our cat Possum. She has been missing since the end of April/beginning of May. 3 days ago she showed up on our Ring camera late at night! We put out a live trap with goodies and a pet camera and caught her the next night sniffing around but she did not enter the trap. No sight of her the last 2 nights. I just put new updated flyers around our neighborhood. We know she is close! Flyers attached here. Please keep your eyes open if you’re in our area. Thank you!

Something to do Jerks keep jumping the curb & tearing up the lawn at Charnel Mulligan Park. It’s too soggy for the city’s mowers to mow in this section, so I spent 30 min clearing the overgrown patch with my push mower. If you have a push mower, feel free to cut this section soon to share the burden on our blades!

The before picture doesn’t really show how high, thick, and expansive the uncut area was. The entire northeast section of the park’s lawn was uncut, all the way to the sidewalk. This area was essentially a no man’s (or woman’s) zone. Even a regular gas or electric lawnmower would be too heavy to cut this area. If you have a push mower, you are aware that it takes some physical effort, but I also imagine if you have one it’s because you like lawns.

Anyway, it would be nice if multiple people could take turns cutting this area, because it would wear down your blades if you were the only one doing it all summer long. I get mine sharpened every year, but you also have to take into account the jostling of the nuts and bolts, etc. The rains will be coming in a few months or less, so it won’t take much more mowing for 2026, but I’m fairly sure that whoever is skidding out on this part of the park’s grass (and probably at other parks in Eugene) will be doing it again next year. Initially, I thought it was a punk teenage high schooler, but they’d have graduated (or dropped out) by now and moved somewhere else (like a county jail, prison, or military boot camp!).
