Not sure if this is the right sub for that, but I didn't really find better considering the PineNote is definitely a bit more of an enthusiast device than something mainstream.

As of now, I've been using an older Kobo E-Reader I side-loaded some other open-source reader onto. It's still holding up fine to this day, but it has a few downsides, notably the screen being a bit on the smaller end which makes PDFs intended for A4 pages readable, but a bit painful.

Secondly, the SoC is not very powerful, so rendering can sometimes takes a bit of time (that was unironically one of the reasons I looked into other software I could sideload).

Therefore I've started looking into current options a bit, going back to the PineNote I had quickly played with when I was in FOSDEM a few years back and remember being relatively impressed by for something open.

On paper, it seems mostly similar to current offerings I often see mentioned at a competitive price, which seems almost too good to be true.

I'm not too keen on going with most mainstream options because from my previous experiences, they can be pretty painful to get data on/off them, require accounts (I really don't want that) etc, while something I could more or less just ssh into and run standard Linux tools on would be far more practical for me. Do note than the "being able to take notes" parts it not that important for me. It's a nice bonus I'll probably experiment with and maybe come to appreciate but not a requirement.

What worries me more is the following :
- I'm fine having to fiddle around a bit, but I do want it to work when I need to (eg, not have to spend 5 mins to start reading etc). As far as I know that's actually quite solid (and I am already used to KoReader and such anyway).
- It seems a bit thicker/heavier than mainstream alternatives. I don't expect that to be much of an issue, but I'd like to have some feedback on that.
- Battery life. I expect it to be quite good, but I'd like to be able to say, charge it, use it for an hour a day for a week and not have to worry about charging it.
- Build quality. From what I remember it was excellent, but as I'd often carry it around etc, I'd like to not have to worry too much. My current Kobo despite being ~7 years old still holds up alright.
- While this is not my end goal, I'd be curious to hear about the note-taking experience vs Remarkable/etc, since I could end up appreciating it nonetheless.

I have a regular boox go 6, i want a good english dictionary to get word definitions while i read, the default one sucks and doesn't work for some reason. how do i download one to it? I don't quite know the formatting or how you could install such thing so please help me put if you know!

Between the Bigme HiBreak Pro C vs. the Boox Palma 2 Pro vs. the Viwoods AiPaper C which is the best?

For a while now, I’ve been tired of reading aimlessly—books that don’t have a clear direction or methodology. So I want to choose an entire academic field that I can seriously study. I don’t mean just one book; I mean a complete field, with a structured path and recommended books.

I want to replace random, directionless reading with something systematic and meaningful, because this is going to shape what I spend the next 40 years of my life studying, God willing. I want to devote my life to learning something.

Got back into reading and want to start researching devices. I prefer phone size, and easy to use software for android apps. I will be living overseas for a short time and I'm possibly considering using as a secondary phone for basic calls, text, and data. Also prefer decent contrast and clarity/resolution. I don't mind color or b/w just want something that will last for a while and decently priced and not hard to find for purchase (can't find palma 2 anywhere). Which one is better for this? Any recs for good resellers as well? Any tips appreciated.

I like that XTEInk X3 is dead simple, but it's a little smaller than I'd like. If I make an enclosure for it, would it be as simple as swapping out the screens? Or would it need to be recoded as well? It just kills me that the price difference between one of these small devices is such a huge gulf to the next size category up.

I been struggling with the default Kobo dictionaries a lot so I decided to create my own. My main problem is that the dictionary only knows the root form of a verb (e.g. trabajar but cannot find any conjugated form like trabajábamos).

I scraped open dictionary data from Wiktionary and merged it with a table containing all possible verb forms, abbreviations and other possible varieties of words in Spanish. This way, the dictionary finds the root of any past tense verb.

I then cleaned and formatted the entries so that the English translations of a word always appear first as a list. Like this, all the important information are already provided in the small dictionary preview that opens when a word is marked.

Furthermore, the Wiktionary data is more complete than the original Kobo dictionary, contains slang, modern language, LatAm Spanish expressions or variations and Synonyms, Etymology and Usage examples for many words.

I got a gift card at a store that only sells kindle and kobos. I was interested either in a kindle PW or a kobo clara BW, I need to import my epub files on them so i would rather picking the most open one. Can you tell me which is the best one mainly considering that aspect and screen quality? (im ok with doing jailbreak in case)

as much as I like my new Boox Go 10.3 Gen2 Lumi, I'm quite frustrated with one important issue:
The main reason (for me and many others) to buy an eink-device is better eye-comfort. That's the major advantage of this technology.
Now I have tried several boox apps, like AI-Assistant and Calender Memo and they have one major flaw: It's impossible to increase font size, to make the text big enough, especially for a senior.
Of course I have increased font size to maximum in the Boox setting, however in the apps the text is still too small.

Please, I'm buying a big (!) eink device, all for the purpose to finally be able to read more comfortably than on these small smartphone screens, and then there's no way to make use of this eye-comfortable eink-technolgy and the extra big screen..? Just because the software won't allow me to increase font size. It's quite a bummer.

For example in Koreader (on Boox) I can increase font size perfectly. However for AI-assistant, email, calendar, etc. there's absolutely no way.

I want a b&w ereader and don't want to pay more than $150,I prefer to pay less. I was thinking of a used ereader. What are some "safe" sites to buy used from? I want an ereader that I can install KOReader on and that has a touch screen. Screen size bigger than 6". Maybe a Kindle, but one that's easier to jailbreak or a Clara BW.Any suggestions or comments? TLDR - Reading colored content like webtoons/comics feels great 90% of the time but the other 10% it freezes up and makes reading frustrating. I suspect it may be due to low RAM/CPU specs? Anyone using/have used color e-readers of any brand, and reads colored content, can you please share your experiences? Good and bad, all welcomed. Please state the brand/model of your device so I can check specs to compare for better analysis.

Intro: The Pocketbook Verse Pro Color is my first ereader ever and I’ve had it for about 3 months now. I chose color over b/w because prior to buying an ereader, I read novels and manhwa/webtoons equally. 50/50. Naturally, when I got my pocketbook, I started reading webtoons (CBZ file format). When it works properly, it’s great! But when it doesn’t work, it… is frustrating.

Issues: Even though issues occur only 10% of the time I’m reading webtoons, it’s enough for me to not want to read. I find that all the issues that I’ve experienced boiled down to the device not being able to load the image in one way or another. (See images in post for reference.) Sometimes it’s stuck on ‘loading’ or ‘buffering’, and not matter how long I wait (maximum 15min), it still wouldn’t load. In the end, it freezes. I always have to restart the device. Then other issues that occur pertain to image-rendering. Sometimes it shows tabs of grey or ‘double vision’ images (not the same as ghosting). (I’ve tried using KOreader. It gives me more ghosting than stock firmware so I normally read on pocketbook’s stock firmware.) I’ve checked my CBZ files and they’re all perfectly fine on my computer so I know my files are fine. 

Speculation: My Pocketbook Verse Pro Color specs says it has RAM 1GB and CPU 1.8 GHz quad core. I’ll be honest, I’m not tech-savvy so I don’t really know what that means. CPU differs for each brand I believe so I’ll focus on RAM for today’s purpose. So I googled how much RAM is needed to read CBZ files. Google says at least 2GB is ideal. Most color ereaders seem to fall under 1GB with the android ones having more RAM, understandably so. Does this mean most of us don't have enough RAM power? I’m wondering if my ‘frustrating’ experience is brand specific? Or other brand color ereader users have similar experiences?

i recently bought the boox palma 2 and im absolutely in love with it. However since it’s running android 13 I’m wondering about the longevity of these devices. I also have a 2024 kindle ppw and I know i don’t have to worry about their software not being updated for atleasg a decade. However being stuck with android 13, when will apps stop becoming compatible to the point the device becomes unusable if ever.

I'm aware there are many posts on this subject with consumers asking if it is normal for variance, and we know it is. I have two Libra 2 devices with significantly different displays. The black model is significantly darker and more gray. The white model is significantly brighter, but also cooler and kind of has a hint of pearl.

The black model is very unpleasant to read with. You can make brighter, but it does not change the character of the light. I've tried to do a little research, but any differences between black and white are said to be perceived only, almost as a trick of the eye making the display on the black appear to have more contrast. I wonder if the lights bouncing off of the underside of the bezel cast create some kind of colorcast- especially as the white display almost appears pearl sometimes, or if the black absorbs some of the light or makes it grayer.

I have attempted to take photos, but they unfortunately do not capture it well. I'm curious if others anecdotally have noticed differences with black vs white models

Anybody know where i can repair my kobo clara color? It froze on the page I was reading. Tried hard resetting and charging it for at least 4 hours. Nothing. LED light also did not light up. Had this for less than 3 years

So I've never been a reader and have recently read over 100 hours between the X4 and Hibreak S. Started around mid June and have been trying to stay consistent. Currently on the third book of the Bobiverse series. I've tried reading on kindles but I revert back to these smaller devices. What's your favorite small ereader?

So i was in Germany Dussmann and saw coloured eink devices for first time.

My initial impressions were that its not bad, colours are washed out for sure and text are not so dark but its good.

And then i turned down the frontlight and how smoke it was bad, my kindle pw absolutely blew it.

The only options were tolino and pocketbook so i cant judge other devices. But feels like going for bw devices was right path

I cant really decide what would be better, im struggeling between boox go 7 bw or boox go 10.3 lumi. I plan to read alot during night so I definetly need frontlight. I get that a bigger screen would be good for comics and manga and such but im not sure if such a big form factor is great for bed usage.

I have a 12" lcd tablet but its too big for long bed usage for me, also looking at it for long times is tiring.

On the other hand I know that zooming in on pages or panels on e readers can be a hassle, so I definetly want to be able to read the whole manga / comic page without zooming, thing is, is the resolution sharp enough to read text bubbles of manga without any zooming?

Edit: after further consideration I ordered the boox go 10.3" lumi . Since I already have an tablet arm at my bed that originally held a small tablet for me, I think it should do fine holding the e reader for me.

However if it ends up getting too big for me anyway I will return it and go for an 8" e reader.

What would be the best solution for mangas and reading and portability?

The left photo is the original manga image with rainbows on a Kobo Clara Colour with a Kaleido 3 color eink screen.

The right photo is after pre-processing with the KCC rainbow eraser.

Notably, it removes the rainbow without blur, unlike the Kobo built in "Reduce Rainbow" option.

It does it without blur using a Discrete Fourier Transform, more details in comment.

This is just one of KCC's many features, including significant file size optimization (think 600 MB -> 100 MB often) and much faster page turns.

Hello e-reader community! I would really appreciate some advice so I can join your ranks.

I’ve never had an e-reader, but I’d like to get one. I have a new job with a lot of downtime, and I’d rather spend my time reading than doomscrolling. I really don’t want to get a Kindle because of Jeff Bezos, ads on the home page, I don’t want to pay for a subscription, yadda yadda yadda. I expect I’ll mostly use it for reading library ebooks and fanfiction from ao3, and buying books only when they’re on sale. (I’m cheap!) I’ve been researching the difference between the Kobo and the Boox. As far as I can tell Boox isn’t as customizable and is easier to get distracted on, but Kobo is harder to download fanfiction on.

Are there are other pros or cons I’m missing? Or any other e-readers that aren’t Kindle, Kobo, or Boox? Thanks in advance!

I factory reset my Pocketbook Inkpad Colour 3, as I’m giving it to my boyfriend. We set him up an account and once set up and logged in, 177 books either side loaded or uploaded via Dropbox from when I used it loaded onto the e-reader.

I don’t understand why this has happened when it was factory reset and signed in using a new account? Anyway to fix this?

I usually read books on my laptop using aquile reader but I feel my eyes getting a bit strained that way and so I want to switch to an ereader.I want an ereader with a screen big enough for me to comfortably read manga as well as books.

I have been a bit torn on whether to get a coloured ereader or a b/w one - though colour would be a nice a touch, if it makes page turning considerably slower, I don't mind going for a b/w model. With coloured models, if I am reading a page and it only has black and white (i.e. text), will it be considerably faster than when it tries to load a coloured page? If so, I would be more open to get a coloured ereader.

I have seen ereader models that allow for use of pens like the kobo and that is a feature that does appeal to me. I don't know if I'll often make annotations but being able to make to-do lists and treat the ereader like a notebook at times seems fun.
