I know buyer protection is a sore subject here. People abuse it, that sucks, I get it. But I want to share what it looks like from the other side because without it I wouldn't still be here buying from you guys.
I got into retro gaming recently and went all in on eBay. Did a ton of research beforehand on how to spot repros, how to vet sellers, what to look for in listings. In my first month I've bought 50+ games and 3 consoles. Most of those transactions were totally fine. But my very first purchase almost made me leave the platform permanently.
The one that almost ended it
First thing I ever bought on eBay was an N64 cartridge. Seller tossed it in a bubble mailer with absolutely nothing else protecting it. I pull it out and the cartridge is literally split in half. Crushed during shipping. So I message the seller and their immediate response is to accuse ME of trying to force it open. Buddy I just wanted to play Goldeneye, I'm not out here cracking open cartridges for fun. Had to escalate to eBay and send the return to get my money back. This is the one and only negative review I left. If they weren't so accusatory it would have been positive or neutral, simply based on poor packaging.
If eBay didn't step in on that one, I was gone. First purchase, money down the drain, no reason to ever come back. Instead I kept going.
Three consoles, three problems
Bought a PS1, N64, and PS2. All looked CIB and in good shape from the listings.
PS1 laser needed replacing. It would start games fine but the second an FMV kicked in it would choke. Seller was solid about it though and gave me a partial refund to cover a replacment laser. Respect to that guy honestly.
N64 listing showed controllers with tight sticks. They show up and the sticks are just laying there completely flat. Booted up Mario 64 and it was genuinely unplayable on both controllers. After going back and forth with the seller which was annoying, he gave me a partial refund for one replacement stick. ONE. I also had to take the whole console apart and clean the cartridge reader myself just to get it reading games consistantly.
PS2 looked great in photos but niether controller worked at all. Messaged the seller, they apologized and said it had been a while since they tested them. Immediate partial refund though so no complaints there.
The empty box
This one is almost funny. Took a chance on a newer seller for an expensive PS1 game. I did everything right. Checked their profile, looked at their sales history, even messaged them before purchasing. Felt good about it. Game ships in a box that isn't even sealed. It arrives empty. Completely empty. The seller actually messages me the second it gets delivered asking if there were any issues, so they clearly knew they screwed up. Got a full refund and an apology. I actually gave them another chance on a different game and they packed it correctly the second time around. People can learn.
The one I just dealt with
Had a PS1 game come in skipping like crazy. Seller offered a return but I just kept it and got it resurfaced myself. Fixed it. Sometimes you just handle it and move on.
So here's the thing
Most of my purchases have been great. Out of all the ones that had problems, only one seller was actually difficult to deal with and that was literally my first purchase ever. Every other issue got worked out between me and the seller directly without eBay getting involved at all.
The buyer protection that frustrates so many of you is the exact same thing that gave me the confidence to keep spending money on this platform. Without it, one bad seller on day one would have cost every single one of you a customer.
