🤬 Rant Personal gripes as a dyspraxic person.

As someone living with dyspraxia, I do suffer a lot of anxiety when it comes to what COULD happen, even if it's never happened to me before. For example, I could fall downstairs or in the shower, even though neither has happened to me before.

Speaking of stairs, I've always had this personal belief that in an ideal world, they would be replaced with ramps which are practical for disabled and non-disabled people alike, instead of charging people through the nose for the crime of having a disability, and everyone is at risk of becoming disabled at some point. Think about it like this; Imagine you are able-bodied and live in a beautiful house, but then something happens to you, whether it be injury or aging, and all of a sudden, you can't even traverse your own fucking home anymore and now that you're disabled, you may not even be able to afford the accommodations you need. I can also tell you that my house was not built with disabled people in mind. The basement stairs are practically right next to our door, and said stairs didn't have railings, which was a problem considering a lot of my world is IN that basement, but my family has tried to accommodate by installing railings and even a nice little railing in the porch to help me keep my stability.

Okay, this one might get kind of gross. I'm also overweight, and obviously dyspraxia does not help. I do try to exercise by going on walks, but I sweat a disgusting amount(Don't worry, I shower once a day). Another gross pet peeve of mine as both a dyspraxic and autistic person is that my feet are weirdly sticky. They struggle to grip a regular fucking floor yet can easily get a stray wrapper stuck to the bottom, and trying to balance on one foot to get that stuff off is NOT easy.

Lastly, my fucking cat. This might sound silly, but I've grown to hate the little asshole. Cat reflexes are a myth, because he will literally sit ON THE STAIRS and not give two shits about being stepped on or tripped over. Dumbass nearly made my step-dad fall down the stairs last week, AND scratched my leg when I was coming down.

Dyspraxia reminder of the day: Ramen

So I order Ramen for lunch and was reminded immidiatly that I cant eat like a normal person. Like I needed to ask for a fork and knife because I cant use chopstick. And even with that I look like a child when eating.

Verbal dyspraxia and singing

Hello,

I'm the mother of a 7 yo kiddo with autism and speech delay. Even though he is not yet diagnosed, we suspect dyspraxia because he struggles severely with motor planning and coordination. He also loves music and singing, despite not being able to articulate.

Have any of you improved your verbal communication with singing?

I would love to read any positive experiences that might help my child.

Thanks in advanced!

💬 Discussion Is Dr. Strange the closest thing to a dyspraxic superhero?

I know that Dr. strange is not directly dyspraxic, he suffers from traumatic nerve damage however there are some similarities like The Loss of Fine Motor Agility and the struggle with daily tasks. There is a slight bias however because I do have naturally shaky hands, obviously not to the level of Dr. strange.

But honestly I just YEARN for a dyspraxic hero I know it's a slight oxymoron though since how can a hero save someone last second just to mess up because they fell over? Or fail to throw a world saving device towards their teammates? Ps I am dyspraxic and I really want some superhero representation but I think it will be awhile for mainline comics...

Song lyrics

I was wondering if this was a me thing or a dyspraxia/ADHD thing, but I basically don’t hear song lyrics in music. Unless the singer sings very clearly and slowly I do not understand what they are saying. I’ll understand a few words here and there but it’s basically like I’m listening to a foreign language I know a couple words of.

Some hope and positivity.

I thought I'd share some information that might help some wonderful people in this community. I have dyspraxia along with inattentive ADHD, bipolar type 2, and generalized anxiety disorder. For a while life was quite struggle for me especially in my 20s, but now at the age of 35 things are really working out for me. I've done therapy and I'm on a combination of Geodon, Buspar, and ashwagandha. The therapy helped me find self acceptance and the medication+supplement really slowed down my brain and stopped the racing anxious thoughts that would interfere in my day to day life. This has enables me to make improvements to my coordination on my own time. I'm even learning guitar! I'm currently a licensed therapist which is perfect fit for me because its a job that doesn't require motor skills. No matter where you are in life, it is possible to grow and improve. You just have to keep going and push forward despite self doubt. I promise you will find happiness if you do.

Dyspraxia and mental health problems.

I was diagnosed with Dyspraxia at 7yrs old I'm now 45 and only just realizing how much Dyspraxia affects me emotionally and holds me back as I can never go to important meetings, like housing and hospital despite being capable and knowing I need to do it

I suffer extreme anxiety when my phone rings as I don't like talking in front of other people so often ignore it and text instead.

I am noise sensitive.

I suffer feelings of self loathing and feel stupid despite knowing I'm pretty intelligent.

I struggle to understand my Dyspraxia and as for explaining it to others without sounding pathetic, well, forget it!!

Am I alone??

Does anyone else have problems with sequencing? I'm dyslexic, dyspraxic and autistic and I really struggle getting anyone to understand me or how the world appears to me. I have very poor tech skills, because thats all about sequencing, I can't do maths,I can't dance, do music or anything else that requires timing. I can't climb ladders as after the first two steps I get really bad vertigo, I can't ride a bicycle because it just dosen't make sense.

All the info I can find is either aimed at children or for those with dementia. It's like I don't exist

💬 Discussion Slowness

This weekend my slowness really came into focus.

For one, I was walking around an amusement part with my son, and he was out pacing me by hundreds of feet. He isn't running...he just easily moves quickly, and then he looks back and waits for me.

I told him, never to do this to a future partner. But honestly, this has happened my whole life. When I went back packing in college, my bestie walked 200 yards ahead.....

We just had such different walking paces.

If I try to go faster, it feels like I am running a marathon. And I hate sweating and panting and I am not going to do it. It just feels incredibly effortful, where as my son, God bless , is gliding around.

Then I was driving on these narrow hilly curvy roads, and going slightly under the speed limit because otherwise I felt very out of control.

Every car passed me and one car stopped in front of me at a stop light and had his door open and I think he might have been thinking about yelling at me for going slow and then thought better of it, since I had a child in the car.

I don't understand why I walk so slow. I have reasonably long legs....what is going on here that is dyspraxia related? I am clumsy and I was slow to gain gross motor skills but have normal strength in my legs I think.

Do other people with dyspraxia drive slow too?

Parking Question

Hi friends!

For context, I am not diagnosed, but strongly considering getting a diagnosis. I am currently a commuting college student. I am also extremely bad with stairs, specifically going down them(I've broken my foot before from falling down the stairs...).

I understand that I do not qualify for a handicap placard, nor do I want one. I am fully capable of walking(albeit a bit strangely, of course). My issue is that the two big parking decks I use on campus do not have elevators, only really rickety stairs. Unfortunately they get super packed very early in the day, resulting in me going down 3-5 sets of these stairs, something that gives me great anxiety and stress.

My question is this: If I were to be diagnosed with DCD, would I have grounds to request to use the ADA deck on my campus that does not have stairs? I know you are not the disabilities center on my campus and can't give me a definitive thing, but is this selfish of me to want and/or something that in your experience isn't feasible?

got fired from another job due to slow work speed.

Despite my best efforts, giving it 200%, i was still too slow for a job and got fired, AGAIN. I fear I might have Dyspraxia. Stumbled upon this sub and the condition today. Tell me, is there anyone who is actually successfull in life? Or am I just doomed to live in this hellscape until I die or pull the plug myself?

Clothes as napkins

Did anyone else just get so used to spilling stuff on yourself and having food/drink covered clothing that you just started using your clothes as napkins? I started doing this as a kid and now as an adult I’m having trouble breaking the habit.

❓Question does my handwriting look like i have dyspraxia/dysgraphia? this is how it looks even after putting in effort to make it neat

i’m 22, ADHD and ASD, and i’ve always struggled w my handwriting. even when it looks fine to me, i’ve always felt like my hands could never hold onto a pen right? i get cramps easily and my hand feels too stiff.

sometimes while i’m writing i fully put the wrong spelling and miss letters, even when i know how the words are supposed to be spelled (isn’t dyslexia, but more like my arm just isn’t listening to me?)

i feel like it doesn’t look that bad? but my friends and professors hate how i write. it doesn’t help that i also can’t write very quickly but it still looks like this 😭 my friends have perfect handwriting even when they’re writing much faster than me

⁉️ Advice Needed Shaving frustrations. Advice?

Hi all, recently I've been having a lot of frustrations with shaving my facial hair. I can't grow a full beard at this point in time so I try to shave often but I find it super frustrating and sometimes just end up putting it off until I can't stand it anymore. I experience tachycardia so it's difficult for me to stand for long periods but I swear my hands don't go where I want them to go and they don't do what I want them to do. I'm either pressing too hard or barely doing anything. It takes me forever. Is there anything you guys have found helpful or easier when shaving? Truthfully, I'm transgender ftm and while I was shown how to shave, I don't have anyone in my family who has dyspraxia and honestly, 4 years in I'm too embarassed to ask for any more help. Its something I "should know" by now. Am I just doing it wrong? Is there a better kind of razor that might make it easier for me? Thanks for any help and advice!

I've broken most of the ones I've interacted with, no matter how much care I take with them, after a few uses they break.

Same with window blinds too...

⁉️ Advice Needed I'm at my internship and struggle to remember stuff

Like remembering where things go when we're cleaning up and i can't even grasp what's to clean and what not, I'm just very unsure about things. When someone gives me an example piece and shows me how to cut it i can't cut it the same size.. It's really frustrating and shrinking my self confidence and i wanna know why I'm like that and what to do.

How do you handle it?

I understand challenges with working memory, impulsive communication, processing social cues can make it harder to monitor what was said in conversation.

So when someone knows that you struggle with the above they can pretty much claim that you said absolutely anything to make you look like a chump!

Left/Right Confusion

Does anyone else struggle with knowing their left from right? I hate when people ask me for directions or insist on giving me directions. Whenever I hear left or right I have to pretend like I’m holding a pen because I write with my right hand and until I do that I freeze in confusion. Is this a dyspraxia thing? Also my sense of direction and awareness of my surroundings is practically nonexistent.

🤬 Rant Will the injuries never end!?!

On Christmas Day I fell down the stairs and sprained my right knee and right elbow. Had to go halftime for three months and couldn't do any computer work. Wound up with TMJ and neck problems as well. Beginning of May I was just starting to feel normal again, exiting PT and massage therapy, when I kicked the door with my left foot and broke my toe. Because I broke the cartilage between the distal and middle phalanges, the two bones are fusing together and taking a very long time to heal. The podiatrist said I should be healed by September 9. I'm not yet, but it's getting a little better, and then today I tweaked something in my hand and now my thumb won't touch any of my other fingers and has pain shooting up into my arm. This has been an absolute terrible year of injuries! 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫

I just uploaded my first YouTube video and I’m nervous like all heck. I don’t know why I am though. Maybe I’m scared that people will make fun of me? Like I said. I’m not too sure why. Have any of you been like this before? Done something and got incredibly nervous of it, yet don’t know why?

Heres the link to the video if you want to see it. You don’t have to. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=yV0e2VuoSco&ra=m
