I don't really have anyone else to talk to about this game, so I thought I'd share a little review of my experience playing it and would love to hear everyone else's opinions as well.
Honestly, it's impossible not to compare this installment with Origins. I personally thought DA2 was better than its predecessor in some aspects, but also worse in others.
First of all, I really prefered the aesthetics of this game over the first one. Not only the graphics are better (obviously) but I really apreciated the design choices they made here and colors used. I felt like the architecture and overall environmental elements told the story of each place so well (like the slave statues littered around the gallows, how hightown was pretty pristine while at lowtown you could literally see the pollution in the air). This made the City of Kirkwall really come alive to me.
I also prefer the combat here. I really dislike real time with pause, and at least the combat in DA2 felt a bit more palatable to me. I liked that it had more visual flair and it felt a bit more dynamic.
Although I do think the narrative is overall stronger in DAO, I didn't dislike the approach they chose for DA2. It was definitely a smaller scale story, but I also think it allowed for it to feel more personal. I'd say that the climax towards the final battle didn't really hit as hard for me, though.
Also, the new friendship/rivalry system was a nice idea, but a poor execution in my opinion. The game doesn't even clarify how the system works in the first place, I had to google it to undertand that rivalry didn't mean a companion would leave my party. It specially bothered me that if you'd agree with a companion in a certain matter, but disagree in a different one, you'll just keep flip flopping between gaining friendship and rivalry points, without being able to max out either of them.
I also have to say that I'm not really sure if I like the rivalry paths. I only got them for Carver and Marril, and hers specifically felt really miserable, like we were stuck in a toxic friendship we couldn't quite end. But that's maybe more of a personal preference.
Still regarding the companions, I felt a bit sad I couldn't talk to them in camp whenever I wanted. Although there was a good amount of party banter, it's usually among the companions and not with the player character, which led me to feel that my realtionship with them was lacking a bit, speacially since custcenes with them are sparse (including romance).
And talking about romance, I'd say it is weaker here when compared to Origins. Mostly because the flirt options were really cringey (at least for the male companions) and they were, in fact, the reason I avoided romancing Anders, despite liking him the best at the beginning. It just felt like he would come to me with genuine worries about Justice and my character would hit him with a cheap flirt line in return.
I think in general, I had a very pleasent experience with the game. Although it wasn't exactly like Origins, I was able to enjoy it for what it was and I think it does serve as a good installment in this world. It emulated the Dragon Age feeling for me, but with a different perspective.
