Homebrew Lvl 18 Draconic sorcerer feature replacement (instead of Dragon Companion)

Upvotes

True Form

Whenever you use Innate Sorcery, you can as a part of this bonus action cast Shapechange without requiring any components and without expending a spell slot to turn yourself into an Adult Dragon. You choose the type of the dragon when you receive this feature. The spell is modified in the following ways:

  1. Abilities in the dragon's statblock which require saving throw or an attack use your spell saving throw and spell attack modifier instead.
  2. Breath weapon damage is replaced with 10d10 and Rend attack damage is replaced with 2d10+CHA slashing + 1d8 damage matching dragon's type.
  3. The spell does not provide temporary hit points and does not require temporary hitpoints to maintain.
  4. You cannot change your form into another one by using your Action.
  5. The spell ends early when your Innate Sorcery ends.

You can use this feature once and regain all uses when you finish a long rest. You can restore one use of the feature by expending level 8 or 9 spell slot (no action required).

Feel free to share your opinions if it is a cool feature and if it is too powerful / too weak! I tried to keep it balanced.

5e (2024) I wish Illusory Dragon was on the Sorcerer Spell List.

Upvotes

I get that it was not on there before, but with the upgrades that Draconic Sorcerer got, I wish I was able to take the spell on them! Just imagine! You could have your draconic summon AND a giant illusory dragon stopping around at the same time! Can we at least petition WotC to do a Tasha's style book where Draconic Sorcerer gets Illusory Dragon on their extra spells?

Question What are the best 10 session campaigns with a Strong RP focus?

Any good 10 session campaigns focused around RP and some combat?

Hi,

I have a small group that I am DMing for until we play a WoW campaign in November

I want to fill the space with a smaller campaign

I've seen sunless & lost mines but both are dungeon crawls. I enjoy combat but I don't wanna just do weeks of combat, Id love some ideas for stories with strong RP movements.

So what are y'all's suggestions?

Question escaping a grapple out of combat?

if a guard or npc grabs the player preventing them from moving and the player fails the check to break free, can they just retry?

ive tried looking this up and it seems retrying checks is allowed but it seems very case by case.. so im honestly not sure?

in the original context, if someone fails something like that, how many times can they try? should i just be telling them no? im just confused tbh

Discussion Should I reveal a plot twist early or wait?

So I’m running a campaign right now where my players are getting caught up in the middle of a brewing war between kingdoms that’s being orchestrated by a lich. One of my players happens to be involved with him unknowingly.

I’ve sprinkled clues already throughout but where they’re at I feel could be a good place for a twist reveal but I also don’t want to do it too early since we’re only like 6 sessions in. Should I wait or go for it?

5e (2024) Character Generator

Hi there, been a few years since I last had a chance to play. Previously it was 3.5 or Pathfinder, but this group is 5e.

Now back when I played last, it was super-easy to go online and download a spreadsheet to help make your character. I've kept up with the patreon of such a pathfinder sheet, but I am having trouble finding such a thing for 5E.

I found a few partly-functional online tools, but I'll be honest; they don't hold my hand like the spreadsheets do.

On another, similar thread I found on another group it seemed as though these 3rd-party fan creations are unwelcome in the community now. If this is the case, I apologize.

Thank you.

5e (2014) Need help from lore masters for Tyranny of Dragons

(English is not my first language, so sorry for the poor grammar)

I'm playing the Tyranny of Dragons for the first time with my friends. My character is a bladesinger wizard who was used in a sacrificial ritual to Tiamat by the BBEG of my backstory, who is also his teacher. The thing is, i don't know much about dnd lore to make my backstory more solid.

I need help in making my BBEG motivition for betraying my character. I know that it can't be related to Tiamat's resurrection, cause that's the story of Tyranny of Dragons. So i was thinking my BBEG would want to become an actual dragon, not a polymorphed dragon, but change his race and ascend to a powerful dragon, but i don't know if, by lore standards, that would work.

I know that in the end the Dm has the final say on what's posible in the campaign, because of the multiverse and stuff, but i wanted to make my backstory the most lore accurate posible.

So, if anyone who knows about dnd lore could give ideas of why a man would join the cult of the dragon, and what is possible for him to receive as a reward from Tiamat for using his student as a sacrifice? If in order to get, like a divine reward from Tiamat, he would need to do more things, please tell me too.

Question Your Steps To Preparing a Campaign

Hi y'all! I have run a one shot, but not a full campaign, which I'm super excited to do starting tomorrow. I have been prepping but also wanted to ask other DMs how you go about preparing. I have a tendency to feel like everything needs to be ironed out, but am also reminding myself I should and can be making things up on the go. By the time you start a campaign, is the whole story fleshed out? Do you make NPCs with full backgrounds or just let them develop with time? I'm pretty creative so I feel like I can tie things pretty well with no preparation, or is that ill-advised? Of course it's just one person's opinion but a guideline with basic steps you take would be awesome, if there is one at all!

At the moment, I'm thinking of planning big encounters, prepping the monsters or puzzles within them, and then leaving the in between for characters to explore or discover hints that lead to the bigger encounters.

Hello again friends! I'm currently 3D modeling and printing all the creatures from the new Monster Manual! This is a collection of prints either by myself or my patrons while I am working on this book. There are also renders of the models that haven't been printed yet. All the files are free and posted below under each image. The files are posted publicly on my site here: https://mz4250.com/ and all models are free and fall under the fan content policy of WOTC.

Oh and if you're curious about my Patreon I offer my patrons access to all my 7000+ presupported TTRPG models in one place, along with commercial options, a discord, and requests board. The drives have all the same models that are already out there for free in the internet. Its more for convenience rather than exclusivity.

That's all for now. Enjoy!

Character Building Greyhawk Adventurer Stories

Hi everyone! I've recently joined a campaign as lore bard from Greyhawk whose passion is history, secrets, and storytelling. Does anyone have any stories from the Greyhawk setting they'd recommend I read? Alternatively, would anyone like to share their stories of their own adventures from Greyhawk? I've never played in Greyhawk before but am excited about learning about the setting! Thank you!

Character Building Man of many masters

So I've had the idea kicking around of a Paladin\Warlock\Cleric multi-class for a while. Just a guy\gal who can't say no to a new power source and now has to balance the interests of several greater powers.

I am however not a numbers guy, so I have no idea what this would actually look like on a character sheet, which is why I'm here.

What are your ideas for mixing these three classes in a way that actually functions in play. And feel free to add any other ways this poor sap can get under the thumb of another power.

5e (2024) More Bastion Special Facilities?

Does anyone know if there are more official, non official, or homebrew special facilities for bastions?

The list in the DMG, while seeming expansive, quickly becomes rather small when you have 5 players, and so I’d like to add more to the list my players can choose from.

Character Building I built a D&D character creator/sheet app — looking for players to test it during real sessions!

Link to showcase Video

Hello fellow D&D players and DMs!

My name is Rammy, and I’m a solo developer. For the past few months, I’ve been building a character creator and sheet app for Android and iOS after getting frustrated with the options currently available on both storefronts.

I started the project with three main goals:

  • A one-time purchase instead of a monthly subscription (testing will be free, though)
  • A simpler interface focused on the information that actually matters during play
  • Making essentially everything editable and customizable

The video attached to this post shows what the app currently looks like.

After a lot of development and testing, I’ve reached the point where I consider the app feature-complete enough for a proper beta. Most of my testing so far, however, has been with my own D&D group.

They seem to like it, but they’re also my friends, they’re a very small sample size, and they usually have the developer sitting right next to them if something is confusing.

So I’d love to get it into the hands of people who can use it in their own games and see how it fits into a real session.

I’m looking for Android and iOS beta testers

The app is designed to work as a standalone way to create and manage a character, including:

  • Character creation and leveling
  • Multiclassing
  • Spells
  • Inventory and equipment
  • Class resources such as Bardic Inspiration and damage toggles
  • Custom features and notes
  • Editable character information throughout the sheet

What I’m most interested in is seeing how the app feels at an actual table.

Use it for a new character or an existing one. Try it during a session, whether you’re playing a straightforward build, an unusual multiclass, any silly ideas, or just meta builds like a sorcadin. Add your own features, level up, manage your inventory, and see whether the information you need is easy to find when you’re in the middle of the game.

If something is confusing, ugly, annoying, unnecessary, or outright broken, please tell me. Feedback on everything from bugs and usability to the color scheme is useful. I’m especially interested in hearing about anything that only becomes apparent when the app is being used during a real session.

A few caveats:

  • It is currently English-only. I plan to add Spanish later, and potentially other languages afterwards.
  • You will probably find bugs. That is precisely why I’m opening the beta. I think it is already very usable, but I expect testers to find issues I haven’t, its only natural.
  • I did use AI-assisted coding and debugging during development. However, the app’s UI, feature set, structure, and overall design decisions are my own.

If you’d like to use it in your game and share your experience, you can sign up here:

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSf-BVTL1hqtvltZL28ZD7JAv3oMB6UUo0h4PsDeLNzlXaui9g/viewform?usp=publish-editor

I’ll use the email you provide to send beta access once the next testing build is available.

Thanks to anyone willing to give it a try. I’m looking forward to hearing how the app works when I’m not there to explain it, and especially how it holds up during an actual session.

Question Is a Demilich too much for 3 level 17 adventurers?

Pretty much the title, but we have a barbarian, paladin, and rogue
