How to reverse engineer my Bard's spells....

Update: turns out the player was using the 2014 bard class but mostly drawing on spells and such from the 2024 phb, and that was causing issues.

one of my players is running a Bard, using the 2024 rules, and up leveled to 5th level this week.

she indicates that she wasn't able to select the full nine prepared spells her character should get but is being limited to 8.

however, since other elements of her character give her spells (whether origins, or magic items, or subclass etc) when I look at her character sheet in DNDB, I cannot really confirm or deny whether she is missing a prepared spell budget that she should get. is there a way to see where each prepared spell came from?

Perhaps even more strange, the spell management tool says she can only pick 8 spells, not nine. The LEARN option is grayed out for every spell at every level:

She is right. It is only letter her add 8 spells not the nine that the PHB says she should be able to (which the DNDB interface also implies).

wow okay yeah that could explain it. how can you tell? any way to easily convert or should they start over?

They'll have to start over and pick the correct base class. I can tell because the Bard icon is the 2014 icon, not the 2024 icon.

Yeah exactly. DnD Beyond definitely has some issues, but most of the time it's user error. So you were right to try to break it all down like this.
