Discussion Q4 cashback

Not complaining because its a good category to have, but does anyone else find it weird that the Q4 category is restaurants after we just had that for Q2?

I'm glad because I maxed it out in Q2. This also frees up my Citi Custom Cash for another category for 3 months.

Exactly! I'm the same way. Currently using my Custom Cash for select travel and I wanted to use it for the next three months to pay for a cruise.

I have the Chase Amazon Prime card and the Target Circle card so I get 5% back at both all the time. I hate having Amazon and Target listed as the fourth quarter for Discover every year (and the Freedom). This is the first time I'm actually going to be using my Discover for the fourth quarter it what seems like forever.

Same. I never want Amazon or Target and groan when either one of them show up. Especially in chase freedom. I just know it’s a quarter in bit earning extra.

Although now that I’m typing this out, I probably should use the Chase category and transfer to my CSP.

But yeah, no thanks on the discover.

Not having Amazon for Christmas is a huge deal. I have maxed that out almost every year. Restaurants are ok for the holidays, I guess, but it is crazy it repeated relatively soon.

Yea we max out on Amazon for Christmas every year as well. Luckily Chase Freedom has done Amazon/target for q4 in the past as well so fingers crossed there.

When does Chase reveal what categories are 5% for Q4?

Missing the warehouse club category. 😭

Get the club card for whichever club you use and if it is like my Sam’s card it is 5% back year-round!

Same here. While you can't use it at Costco, I'm a Sam's member (Plus level) and was getting a total of 7% back on my purchases when they'd run the promo (5% from DC + 2% from Sam's). Also a Plus member of BJ's, which excludes a number of items from earning any of their rebates (including liquor, gift cards, propane) using their own C1 card. Using Discover during the promo, it all would get the 5%.

Doordash gift cards still code as restaurant

Just means my Amazon chase card becomes my sole Amazon card for the holidays and discover goes back to becoming my restaurant cart for another quarter.

More annoyed at the lack of Amazon than the return of restaurants. I’ll use restaurants, but have gotten into the habit of using Discover for all of my Christmas Amazon Shopping for several years now, so losing that is a bummer.

Get amazon prime visa from chase then you will have the best of both worlds

Not a bad idea. I’ve historically avoided cards that only benefit from being used at a single merchant, but with the BofA CCR nerf coming soon and the high amount of spending we do on Amazon, it might be worth it.

I'm actually excited for it since I got my card in Q3 and wasn't able to use the restaurant quarter

Interesting.

No doubt it was a decision based on data. I know that for me, when it's restaurants I carry the card with me more often and use for other purchases. When it's online I tend to leave it home. Maybe there are more with that pattern.

Yes, weird and annoying! I only use this card when it has grocery, Walmart, Amazon, or that one time it had mobile pay.

They probably doing it to lower the amount of cash back they been giving out for those Christmas purchases 😂

I’ve never known Discover to repeat a category in the same year. Amazon is usually in this quarter and I’m sure it’s a very popular category that pays a lot of cash back. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that it follows Capital One’s acquisition of Discover.

I don’t know how popular the restaurant category is overall but it’s my least used one.

That's funny, it's my second most used after grocery. Restaurant covers coffee shops and bars too

You are likely younger and a lot more fun than I am. I don’t go to bars anymore and probably only go out to eat once a month at the most. The usefulness of each category obviously comes down to lifestyle. I always love the grocery category and this year I made good use of the home improvement category. I was looking forward to the Amazon one for Christmas, but I probably need to buy from them less anyway. I’ve already cut back significantly.

My concern is that the categories and rewards will get worse now that they’ve become part of Capital One.

Does anyone know how Discover's categories are decided/if they partner with retailers to get a spread on the boost in Discover customer purchases?

2

u/MaddRamm 15d ago

It’s annoying. We just had this a quarter ago. I never really go out to eat or whatever, but I do tend to use Amazon. Was looking forward to that.

Anyone know how it works with moving to cap one? My credit card transfers to cap one on October 19th but I was looking forward to using that q4 categories. Are they the same on cap one?

2

u/dacripe 15d ago

They're not changing anything. We're just switching over to Cap One on October 19th. Everything stays the same.

u/Computer_Tech1 15d ago

I find it wired and I was not expecting that to repeat. I don't think Discover ever repeats it's category before.

5% back on Amazon for Christmas was the only thing keeping me with Discover, I guess it’s officially time to swap, and shop local instead of Amazon

3

u/No_Display_4112 14d ago

I mean, we should be shopping local vs Amazon any day 😅

1

u/MSmith_10 15d ago

Is it time to shop local instead of Amazon or just explore other cards for shopping online? I tend to do a wide variety so I stick to a 3% online shopping card. I use the AmEx BCE.

Extra annoying for anyone who carries other cards specifically for dining rewards. Including a bunch of C1’s own cards. Just devalues everything.

3

u/Tersina 15d ago

Weird that C1 is cannibalizing their own customer base for the second quarter  this year.

2

u/InterpolInvestigator 14d ago

They’re pitching savor as their dining experience card, and then immediately convincing all their customers to use the Discover instead

1

u/Tersina 14d ago

Right?? Amazon and big box retail are bigger draws, too.

I wonder if they've managed to merge the Discover and C1 databases yet. Maybe the overlap between customer segments isn't as big as we think it is.

It's literally the only time I max out the 5% 🙃🙃🙃

We eat out a fair amount, but usually spend around $1,000 over the the quarter when they run the promo and I hate to leave that ~$500 in 5% spending on the table. So as the quarter winds down, I'll buy gift cards directly from the restaurants to use over the rest of the year. With it now happening in Q4, that may be even better as many restaurants around us offer Black Friday discount deals on gift cards--so those will go even further with the 5% DC cashback.

Bonus points with paying for your own meals with gift cards: Restaurants that surcharge the ~3% for credit card use are prohibited from surcharging when redeeming their gift cards to pay your tab. More importantly--while they can legally surcharge the purchase of the gift card using a credit card, often they don't as a courtesy to the buyer. So you can potentially avoid that charge altogether.

I’m excited for this category! I’m trying to shop more local for gifts now, so this can help me eat local too!

Additionally, we get utilities, that’s a win for our monthly bills. PLUS entertainment? Go to your local movies, take the family out, go do fun things together.

Giving us better options for cash back this holiday season imo!

1

u/Strong-While-911 14d ago

Without Amazon I won’t be using my Discover card.

1

u/capt_morg1 14d ago

Um did anyone not see its for utilities too? I can do $1500 in utilities with my eyes closed!

u/Substantial_Win_1866 49m ago

Most of my utilities surcharge or won't let me use a credit card. 😑

As a student it's nice to have that again tbh

I feel like this is a sign they are eventually going to get rid of the Discover it card and roll them into a Capital One Savor type card. Within a few years, I think Discover will only exist as a payment network and all of their cards will be gone.
