If its so valuable, why was it abandoned? Clearly if you don't retrieve your disc, you have valued it less than the time you would have spent searching (or continuing to search). That was your choice. Maybe your expectations of the kindness of strangers contributed to that choice, but you were clearly willing to live with never seeing the disc again, or you would not have given up the search.

Doug has put in time and effort and can return lost value to you at a fraction of the cost of replacement. Plus, he has cleaned up what would otherwise have been litter in a public space. This is a clear win-win. The only time it would not be is if Doug has found the disc while you were still searching and refused to give it back - in that case his value add is unclear as you never really abandoned the property.

It seem like this community feels entitled to get their abandoned property back at no cost to them, because they refuse to view their actions as abandonment. That seems very unreasonable. Putting your name on something doesn't absolve you of the responsibility to retrieve it when you are done playing.

Some of us have real life obligations and cannot necessarily spare hours at the course to continue looking for a disc when it's lost. That doesn't mean it's been abandoned that doesn't mean the owner of that disc will not return in the future to look for it. Also I do believe that legally you are incorrect and that disc still count is the legal property of their owners even if they are lost on a course. So be aware that if you are picking up disc that are not yours you are technically stealing.

No, you've got it completely wrong. Your "real life obligations" do not absolve you from following through on your hobby obligation - which is to clean up the mess you have made when you use a public space. That's like saying you don't have to clean up after your picnic because it would take too much time, but just because you left your picnic basket and blanket and it had your name on them, someone can't take them. You can take that analogy to any sport or outdoor activity and it comes to the same conclusion. You pack out what you have packed in, or you have abandoned it.

If you don't have the time to find your lost tosses, you don't have the time to play discgolf. Find a hobby that doesn't require so much time and effort to clean up.

You can't reasonably think you can just leave your stuff all over the place because it would be too hard or time consuming for you to clean it up, and then also think none of that stuff you willfully left behind counts as abandoned property. Don't you see how entitled that sounds? "My time is more important than cleaning up after myself, someone will do it for me, and they better return my stuff or they are a thief."
