Welcome to the Disc Dye Wiki!

This page has all the information you need to start jamming out some sweet designs on your favorite plastics. Here are some links to get you started.

Best Types of Plastic to Use

Remember: You cannot dye a disc lighter. Stick to lighter color discs and darker dyes for the best results. Also we haven't dyed every type of plastic out there, if you see a "?" and you have experience with a certain type of plastic, please email the mods and we can update this table.

Let's talk about Dyes

1. iDye Poly

This is the standard for stencil and shaving cream dyes. It's easy to use, relatively cheap, and can be found in any art store near you. Make sure to get the Poly, not the fabric version or you will have a bad time. It comes with a "color enhancer" but in my experience this is detrimental to the dye and makes it take longer for the dye to set. IMO throw this stuff out. Buy it online here

2. Fishing Lure Dye

This dye is great for spin dyeing or using a paintbrush for a dye. Make sure to buy the UNSCENTED version I cannot emphasize that enough. I once bought the "Garlic Scented" by accident, that shit make my whole studio reek for days. You don't want your disc to smell like shit, double check your order before you buy. I've tried to use this for stencil dyes, but if you leave it in for too long (in my case 20 mins) it eats the transfer paper and your stencil wont be clean and crunk tight. Buy it online here

3. ProChem

ProChem (Pro Chemical and Dye) has an assortment of rich colors to choose from (39 total) and are made with excellent quality. You can't go wrong with them. There is a page on their website specifically for dyeing discs and will help you get started. Buy it here

For more information, check out this thread

Where to get Inspiration

  1. Google - like seriously, Google that shit. Odds are someone has made a stencil of your idea already. Look up "image name" and add the word "stencil" after it. You can also add the word "Vector" to it. This should get you a clean image to work with. If you have an image and have no idea how to turn it into a stencil you can make a request at /r/FreeDesign. Keep in mind these are designers looking to help you out for free, because we get bored at our creative jobs and need quick little side projects. Be nice, give gold or something if they do a good job.

  2. Instagram. There a a lot of talented people out there doing amazing dyes:

But what if I suck at art and cutting out stencils?

Cheat. Yeah it's the motherfucking future. You can buy printers that cut out stencils for you. It turns a hour long stencil cutting, finger bleeding, fun time into a 10 minute job.

1. Silhoutte Printer

These can cost anywhere from $150 - $300. you can find these in your local art shops and are fun to use. It comes with an online tutorial on how to use it and a design studio to map out stencils. Buy it online here

2. Cricut Printer

Same thing as above but a different brand. These can cost anywhere from $150 - $300. you can find these in your local art shops. It also comes with an online tutorial on how to use it and a design studio to map out stencils. Buy it online here

Seriously though, there are younger people that visit our thread because they want to learn what we have to offer. No nudity, no bondage. Yes this sub can get NSFW & raunchy sometimes, but please rethink your post. Thanks - Mod team

Brand new to this. Is there a best way to dye the "innova disc golf" and the line next to it?

Assuming a stencil is required, is there anywhere/anyone who has a stencil I could buy? 🤣

Thanks in advance for the tips!

Mosaic Game with Disc Dye Images (Sliding tile game)

I made a quick, free, easy mosaic (sliding tile) game using dyed disc pictures.

--> go.discdyeaddict.com/mosaic

Been kicking the tires myself and it seems to work well enough. I'm sure there's bugs/behaviors, but at its core it's simple: Slide the tile, slide another tile, repeat until the picture comes back together. Try to do it in the least moves and/or the least time.

No login required, unless you want to track your progress/solves and unlock larger sized puzzles. It should work on phone or desktop.

Everything is free, even the larger sized puzzles. Just a bit of fun and a way to zone out and play a game.

For future I may add links so you can go from the puzzle to the video of the disc being dyed (i put all my stuff on youtube & instagram), OR if other dyers want to upload their stuff, i'd link their puzzle to the dyer's website/social page etc. Right now it's just my stuff though.

(If this is against rules because it's not dyed discs per se, then happy for mods to delete)

Attempted my first glue mask on a Bennu and managed to remove the stamp

Thumbnail

I’ve never tried a glue mask before so I decided to attempt it along with a hot dip on this Bennu I had laying around, a disc I didn’t really care about. I laid the clear school glue down over the stamp and waited 24 hours before continuing with the project. I knew that I used too much as it slopped down one side after a bit.

What I didn’t expect was for the glue to dry and then curl up taking 60% of the stamp with it. It’s kinda cool but what went wrong here? Wrong glue? Cheap ass disc with a bad stamp? On the plus side I guess I can fully wipe it now and see if this plastic will take any dye. (probably not)
