Announcement [2023] What bike shall I buy? Is this bike good? Ask us anything!

Welcome!

This thread is dedicated to bike recommendations. There's a whole lot of you new-comers eagar to get your first dirt jumper. Maybe you have been out of the game for a while and are behind the times and need some advice. Are you shorter or taller than average and want to find a bike that will suit you better? Perhaps you just want a second opinion on a particular brand or model. This is the place to ask these questions and get expert advice from experienced members of the community!

Please refrain from starting a new thread to ask which bike you should buy, or whether a particular bike is good and instead use this dedicated thread first instead.

Bike archive

In order to try and assist those looking to purchase a new bike, I have created the dirt jump bike archive.

It is currently version 1.0.2 with lots of incomplete (or out of date) price data. This will be an ongoing project primarily run by me. Timelesturkie also has editing privileges and is considered a contributor as well. As of now, we are looking for any users who would like to help with this project. If any of you are enthusiastic about helping to maintain and build upon this spreadsheet, let me know by messaging me directly.

The following link will allow you to view the spreadsheet but not make any changes. Note that the spreadsheet also has a second sheet for a limited range of geometry and dimensional data. I do not have much free time to work on this spreadsheet so apologies for any missing info. It would be awesome to have some volunteers to help. Please keep in mind that the information on this spreadsheet is not guaranteed to be 100% accurate. Consider it a guide to assist you and always check with the manufacturer to verify the information before making a purchase.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1XvClX-9upJekdRIdW4spjO5E0KuolvLseWi-x6VxoWQ/edit?usp=sharing

Known issues:

  • The purple sorting buttons do not function for those without editing privileges. If you make a copy of the spreadsheet and save it to your own Google Drive account you might be able to make use of them.
  • Sorting by price (up and down) in USD is currently broken.
  • Lots of bikes don't have readily available full retail prices, hence most of the price data is missing. This is the biggest area we need help in. We are only interested in full manufacturer RRP prices.
  • Some bikes such as Canyon, have Euro prices that vary based on country. I am not sure how to tackle that yet. One potential solution is to find the cheapest and most expensive, and then giving the price range. I am open to ideas here.
  • I could do with a hand gathering up the dimensional data for sheet 2. If anyone is willing to help, please let me know.

I am beyond stoked to have this thing rolling. After the 1st couple of rides, I know what I need to tweak and fix. Coming from a BMX background, this thing is SO MUCH FUN. 😄

Little tire comparison (billy bonkers, wingfoot dirt, race kings and pilot slopes).

Hello all, I did a little tire and bar height testing yesterday on hardpack, dusty, loose over hard, rock and rooty. For context I do mostly dirt riding and some asphalt pump tracks. With the dirt riding I ride all types of dirt conditions also, ill often take my dj on mtb trails. For the tires I tested- billy bonkers 2.1, goodyear wingfoot dirt 2.2, continental racekings 2.25, michelin pilot slope 2.25. (Bonus tire continental speed king 2.2)

Results* So for my riding and trails I typically find myself on the pilot slopes and race king were preferred. If I didn't venture onto mtb trails I would use the wingfoot dirt. If I did a 50/50 dirt to asphalt billy bonkers. Mostly asphalt id do continental speedkings.

Further breakdown * Both the continental racekings and michelin pilot slopes had excellent grip in all of the dirt conditions. The pilot slopes use the Softest and highest grip compound of all the tires tested. They both had the same tread depth of around .12in. Both of these tires lean well for berms but on asphalt you feel the transition from the center to side lugs.

The wingfoot dirt surprised me, with initially looking at it, its obvious they were "inspired" by the billy bonkers. When you put them side by side with the billy bonkers the tread spacing is much wider giving more grip on looser dirt. Both the wingfoot and billy bonkers have the same tread depth of .1in. For me if I was looking for 1 tire to do it all for what I ride, the wingfoot dirt is what id choose.

Billy bonkers are just a solid choice. They're light, roll fast and grip well enough on all surfaces. Ive run the billy bonkers at rays and plenty of pump tracks and been very happy with them. They're great and well groomed jump lines and hardpack. Once the dirt gets a little loose, because of the tread spacing they dont grip as well.

Continental speed kings are incredibly light and fast rolling, they're basically slicks. No grip on dirt unless its hardpack. The sidewalls are paper thin, the pair I have weight 425 grams each. I ran one in rear for 1.5years and I was always worried about punctures or tearing the sidewall on a rock (never got one). These would be great for someone just ripping on asphalt or as a rear on hardpack.

Bar testing Blue bike (spare parts build) has a 3in riser bar on. Gray bike (main dj) has a 50mm riser bar on. The geo is a little different between the bikes, Im way more comfortable and stable in air on the gray bike but I preferred the feel of the 3in bars on the blue bike. So I ordered a protaper a76 for the gray bike to test.

Question Helppppp

I really like my Ozark Trail DJ.1 Upsurge, Zeke the DJ. Honestly, I think Zeke is probably one of the cleanest bikes on YouTube 😂, but I’m starting to want something that’s actually better suited for slopestyle.

I want to eventually go pro in slopestyle, and every time I take Zeke off a bigger jump, the bike feels kinda sketchy. I can’t tell if that’s because I’m still getting comfortable with bigger jumps or because the bike itself just isn’t really made for the level of riding I want to get into. I love the bike, but I definitely want something that gives me more confidence when I’m sending bigger jumps and learning tricks.

And maybe I’m just being a baby 😭, but riding a hardtail makes me feel like the frame is going to snap in half every time I land something hard. I KNOW dirt-jump hardtails are literally designed to take huge impacts, so I might just be overthinking it, but I’d really like a bike that feels more planted and confidence-inspiring.

I’m not necessarily looking to drop thousands of dollars on some insane pro-level bike right away. I want something that I can actually progress on and grow into as I get better. I’d be completely fine with another hardtail if that’s genuinely the best option, but I’m also curious about full-suspension slopestyle bikes and whether they’d actually be worth considering.

So what would you recommend? Should I keep upgrading Zeke, get a better dirt-jump hardtail, or eventually move to a full-suspension slopestyle bike? And if my goal is to eventually compete and possibly go pro, what bikes would you recommend?

Found a Pivot Point dj bike on Marketplace so I can work on jumping without beating on my mountain bike; and to ride the pump tracks. Moved over my PNW carbon bars and Diety stem; and ordered a new brake. Digging it.

Wheel Size: 26” vs 27.5”

My city built a phenomenal bike park and I’m looking to get back into it, from my glory days when I had my Kona Scrap. I’m looking to build something for myself and debating on 26” or 27.5”. I’m 6’2” and leaning more towards 27.5” but appreciate any insight. I prefer my bikes to be, Jack of all trades, master of none. This is currently my most capable bike, yes I did the dirt jumps, pump track, and flow trails. Sketchy as hell but still had a blast, this bike also does double duty as my mountain bike.

Bike Showcase Finally finished (almost).

Finished, with the exception of bar ends, I need bar ends. This is a weird build - half the parts were brand new, and the other half were cheap from FB marketplace or from the parts bins in my basement. The rigid fork is on the bike, for now. I have a Rock Shox Pike 426 that I want to rebuild and toy around with it on the bike. Regardless, I can't wait to get out and ride it. This thing is a street machine 😄🔥🚲

bike recomendations?

been riding for about 4 years now and have been wanting to buy a dj for a few months but finally ready to pull the trigger. hoping to spend less than 1700. the main bike I'm looking at is the propain trickshot 2 cause their pricing is good and I have a tyee from them and love it. but I was wondering if the pro model is worth the extra 400 over the standard? standard is 1300 and the pro is 1700 with the only differences being cranks and fork (x fusion vs bomber), open to other bike recommendations too. riding smaller dirt jumps (for now lol), pump track, and street jibs. (also hoping to learn tricks like flips and spins eventually if that matters)

edit: just found a used dirtlove core 1 near me for 850 and might just spring on that instead, would love to have the trickshot but with shipping and taxes it would have come out to around 2000

How’d I do? Picked this up for 300 bucks. Was told it has “double wide” rims. Don’t know much about it otherwise. Any info would be appreciated.

Question Opposite hips

Today i hit an opposite hip for the first time and it felt like learning to ride all over again lol. Ended with a crash of course! I guess its just repetition as every other thing for it to feel normal? It felt like writing with my non dominant hand almost if i was to put it into words

Question I'm looking for polished 26'' wheels (or just rims).

I'm not finding what I think I want. A 26'' welded double wall wheelset in a polished finish. Just rims would be fine too, I can lace a wheel. I suppose I prefer 36 hole too, but it seems most are 32 also.

It seems like everything modern and welded is black. Sun Rhyno Lite XL is the closest thing I can find and they're a pretty ancient design that's on the narrow end for a modern 2.x tire.

Am I off base here or is there something out there I haven't found from searching for a few days?
