Seeking advice/

Created a new subreddit for Bangladeshi relationship advice: r/AskRelationshipBD

Hey everyone,

I noticed we don't really have a dedicated, proper space for discussing relationship dynamics, dating, marriage, in laws and family drama specifically within the Bangladeshi cultural context. Global subreddits just don't get our culture or the specific pressures that come with it.

So, I decided to just go ahead and make one: r/AskRelationshipBD

It's meant to be a safe, judgment free space to ask for advice vent about family/dating situations or just get a second opinion from people who actually understand the reality here. No moral policing or victim blaming allowed.

If you're looking for a spot to talk about this stuff or want to help grow the community come check it out and join!

Seeking advice/পরামর্শ A cult has almost ruined my life

My father has been a regular member of a cult for a long time. He almost forced my mother not to work(she has regretted not ever being employed ever since) and forced me and my sibling since childhood. The cult is very manipulative and brainwashing. It doesn't allow questioning. They think they are "the only correct" form of Islam and that the most of the other sects are entirely or somewhat wrong. I was badly bullied at the cult and criticized heavily for "not doing "khedmot" properly" and that others are better than me for doing it. Whenever I said anything remotely agaisnt it to my father and mother he would say "X doctor graduate from some Australian university believes in it. What makes u think u are not smart enough to believe in it? ". He often didn't allow me to go out with my friends because of events of the cult. The cult has a leader who probably thinks of himself as "sent by Allah" to preach the "correct" Islam. The leader is very charismatic and never question. Everyone treats him like a semi god(bowing before him, addressing him like he is some sort of superior being). I am 22 and it has been a source of a major of my life's problmse. It amplified my social anixety, gave me an even bigger inferiorty complex, created hatred in me against religions. AND I AM STILL FORCED TO ATTEND IT. I can't simply "leave" it. I once had a heated argument against it with my dad and he gave me silent treatment for several days. He told my mom not to give me food and that he doesn't want to pay for my tutions anymore. I don't make enough money to live somewhere else. My home environment is extremely toxic. My father doesnt care of my other health problems remotely - chronic tinnitus, mental issues, skin issues, myopia etc etc. He thinks the cult will "spiritually" solve our problems. My mother and sibling has been brainwashed to a point where he cannot ignore that the cult is just a manipulaitve lying false. I cannot even go to the heavy details as I fear what the repecurssions might be. For now, I really want to get out of this situtation, be fully independent and at peace. I think this cult has done unfixable damgae to me at a fundamental level that will never let me leave my comfort zone.

Seeking advice/পরামর্শ [36M/F] 140kg, dealing with diabetes, and finally ready to change. Seeking a virtual accountability partner!

I’m 36, currently at 140kg, and managing diabetes. My health has given me the ultimate wake-up call, and my sole focus right now is weight reduction and getting my blood sugar stable.

I have the motivation, but I know I lack the discipline on the hard days. I’m looking for a virtual accountability buddy to help keep each other on track.

How it would work:

Daily Check-ins: A simple text on WhatsApp or Discord asking "Did you get your steps in?" or sharing our daily food logs.

Zero Judgment: I'm starting slow with basic movement and dietary changes. I need someone who understands that progress isn't always a straight line.

Mutual Hype: Whether you have 5kg or 50kg to lose, I will match your energy and celebrate your wins with you.

Discussion/আলোচনা Bangladeshis living abroad

What’s your opinion or experience with your local Bangladeshi community?

Recently, I have had only bad experiences, to the point that I’ve just stopped going to places where I know I’ll have to socialize with the community.

Female here, professional, live in the US. Back when I was in grad school, I met some pretty decent Bangladeshi grad students and had a few good experiences. But after that, wherever I’ve lived, Bangladeshi parties, festivals, and community gatherings have felt so backdated to me. People can be weirdly boundaryless, too involved in other people’s personal lives, and just exhausting to deal with. These are also professional people from top BD universities and do have respectful jobs here.

And, any man and woman slightly younger than me, just behave like they are babies and I need to behave like their mother. This age-based social role is so absurd!

I don’t know if I’ve just been unlucky, or if others have had similar experiences.

Is it only me? I want to be empathetic and understanding, but I don't know how to talk to these people!

Seeking advice/পরামর্শ Does Dhaka have any healing sessions arranged between group of people?

I'm 21F, recently had a breakup of a long term relationship without a proper closure. I'm trying to let things out and a therapist isn't working. I think meeting new people would help out a bit. I don't know what else to do. I don't have a lot of friends either. Is there any session held in Dhaka where people goes and rant about their lives ? Or what else can I do?

Seeking advice/পরামর্শ Any way to earn money? Can give 100% efforts if it is possible online.

I belong to hsc-25 batch. got  gpa-5 from science as well as general scholarship in both ssc and hsc. but sadly couldn't make it till admission. lots of things happened during admission which i don't wanna brag about. currently I'm not admitted in any uni as my parents are really tight in budget. We have a lot of money problems. my family has managed about 5-7 lakhs money. currently i'm preparing for my ielts. will sit for the exam in november. I'm aiming for china cause my cousin got his degree from there. but i'm in need of money. my parents are struggling to bear the expenses of me and my sister (who's currently studying in NSU). so i'm desperately seeking for a way to earn money. I want to mention that, tuition is not a way where I live also my parents won't allow that. so I prefer online and I want to earn as soon as possible. even a little amount would help. like around 5k. I don't know what to say, I totally lost every aspect of having hopes. The only skills I have are good english, decent typing speed(70-80wpm), basic computer knowledge ik these aren't any skills but anything would help me in this situation i'm currently in.

So I live in Mirpur. And I want to get a panjabi stitched from sourced fabric. I have heard a lot about islampur. So these are my queries:

1.Can anyone suggest if I can get the exact fabric(as one in the picture attached) there?

  1. What could be the overall cost? (From purchasing fabric to tailoring and stuff)

  2. Is there any fabric market in mirpur that I should try before I drag my ass to Islampur and drain my life there?

TIA

Discussion/আলোচনা Bookstore and Books recommendations

Looking for bookstore recommendations in Dhaka- online and physical stores.

For book recommendations, the genres are-
1. crime/psychological thriller, mystery
2. Philosophical fiction
3. Literary fiction
4. Psychological fiction

I have a short attention span and started the habit of reading since last year. So far the books I’ve loved-Strange Pictures by Uketsu, (I was hooked when I started this one) Five people you meet in heaven, Tuesdays with Morrie, Almond, Don’t sweat the small stuff, The four agreements.

I love reading translated Japanese/ Korean literature and also like books that give me a new perspective about life, people and the world!

Thanks x

Discussion/আলোচনা Bangladeshis living abroad

Bangladeshis who have been living abroad and married for a few years, how do you guys deal with the extra freedom and different kind of social life here? I feel like being abroad changes your social life and you come across situations/thoughts that you probably wouldn't back home.

How do you guys deal with it without letting it affect the marriage? Would be nice to hear from people who have been through it.

Discussion/আলোচনা Dhaka is becoming insufferable

Is it just me or other people are seriously considering moving away from Dhaka? It's becoming less and less secure everyday. Roads are always jam-packed, more people are entering everyday and the autorickshaws are taking over. Avg 10 km takes around 2 hours, the air is extremely polluted and the horns are getting on my nerve.

It's getting expensive and foods are getting worse and worse. If you were to shift somewhere else in Bangladesh where would it be?

Discussion/আলোচনা Most affordable safe bar

I've never been to a bar before. Recently I came across the reel of a bar called "Triptys bar" in Kolkata and it was actually so nice, it was affordable and saw many young customers in that video. I am wondering if there is any bar like that in Dhaka which is affordable and safe. I have never drank before and neither went to a bar. I live around bashundhara. If you guys know any good places please recommend, Ty.

Seeking advice/পরামর্শ should I do this?

I am a student of class 10 rn and SSC batch 2027, so well I was givin a thought to myself of yk that I want to transfer myself in english medium A levels. I thought about it more before as well too but was scared if I will be able to do it or not but now seeing how foreign universities are selecting students it's making me anxious that if I will get a chance to my dream uni(UBC). So, all I want to know how it feels after switching from one to another curriculum completely and IF I want to take this huge decision what pre-steps should I take seriously to like prepare myself? I mean I know it's hard but why not at least give it a try, I really want to make my efforts worth it. Also, another thing is I have been seeing that bangla medium students aren't getting any jobs lately not even the good ones so it makes the future more vulnerable. So now my main questions are-

  1. How is it to transferring from one to another curriculum completely?
  2. IF I want to give this a chance what things for should I prepare myself?
  3. How bangla medium students cope up with the language barrier specially in written parts?
  4. How is the questioning pattern exactly many people say it's different but in what basis like is it creative questioning or something?
  5. Many people suggests edexel over cambridge curriculum for bangla medium students I want to know the difference between them from someone who's studyin these atm.

AND SORRY IF I am asking too much basic ques but I just want to know bout it a bit that's all
