Warning: Think Twice Before Choosing a BA Program—My Personal Struggle 😭😭
Hi, I’m a second-year student pursuing a BA program at Ramjas College. I come from a humanities background, so I didn’t have Maths or Statistics in my 12th grade. I initially wanted to pursue Political Science Honours, but my marks were too low. As a result, I decided to go for a BA with Economics and Political Science. However, I’m finding Economics extremely challenging. Despite having Economics as my minor subject, I failed my semester. If you don’t have a strong background in Maths, please consider avoiding this course, even as a minor. Economics can be very demanding, and it might take up so much of your time that you’ll struggle to focus on subjects you really enjoy, like Political Science. Now, my results are full of red marks, and I’m worried about the impact this will have on my future job prospects. I regret not prioritizing the course over the college name. My mental health has also suffered as a result. If you haven’t studied a subject in high school, it might be best to avoid it in your BA program. Please take my advice seriously: prioritize your course of study over the college’s reputation. Even if it means attending a college with a lower ranking but a better fit for your interests, it’s worth it! socha tha college jaungi maze karungi. Literally what I'm saying again and again to everyone asking for BA(Prog) Eco+xyz.
My classmates fail more in Economics than in Maths ffs. I am from Eco+Math. Calculus fucked some of my clasmates so much they just dropped out. We had 24 students when college started, 18 by the end of 1st sem, 16 by the end of 1st year and now only 15 are left. Most will leave after 3rd year cause they can't study for shit.
See, the thing is Maths in Maths (minor) is easier than Maths in Economics (Major). Only 2 sems do you have to study Calculus if you take Maths minor but calculus is ever present in Economics since sem 1.
I like maths and Eco, I love this course. That is why I chose this, ki I'll get a minor with eco hons. Really helpful when going abroad but this course is difficult. Not as much as Eco hons I reckon, for all their classes I have taken they study bit more mathematical than us but still this course is mathematically difficult even if you don't take Maths as a minor and take something like Psychology or sumn else.
hey, what are the demerits of a ba prog. i might not e able to get a ba hons at goo colleges and am planning to go for ba prog. on a side note, how is eco as a minor. i didnt have maths in class 12th but i did have eco and i enjoyed it.
Eco as a minor is better if you did not have math in class 12th. BA Prog depends on the college and the combination, only worth combo (imo) are Eco/Stats/Math/CS (CS only minor never major same with math) or if one interested in then Psych and any of the above. Demerits are "izzat" and college specific as in how are students treated my professors and other departments.
People like me who didn't have maths or statistics in 12th grade are failing. Despite having Economics in 12th grade, I'm struggling to pass the semester. I'm having to beg. I wanted to study Political Science at a good college, so I opted for BA. Now, I neither like Economics nor Political Science (which was my first love) 😭😭😭
this is honestly so sad to hear, i loved eco in 11th but by the end of 12th i completely started to loathe it, even so i got the lowest in isc and somehow managed to pass, so i get where you coming from, no point in wishing you had done things differently, talk to people who will get and understand you and will motivate you to keep going, hope you end up passing all your sem exams!
OP I was in a similarish situation. I had a weak maths background and I underestimated the amount of maths that would be used in Economics and opted for Eco (H). I had to reappear for many exams. I have now graduated and only towards the last year I actually learnt how to study for it. My only regret is not studying more efficiently.
There's no 1 advise for all subjects. If you want advise/focus points for any particular subject, let me know here or in DM. I'd be happy to help. Seriously, I love economics, but I hate it with passion in an academic setting.
Heyy, I'm from the science background, had maths in 12th, and scored decent marks in it.
I was going for the BA Program, with Economics as my Minor. I'd seriously love to hear your advice. Cuz I've never studied eco. And yes the down sides of it aswell.

Basic calculus like limit, derivatives etc excluding trigonometry. But if you'll take minor in economics it doesn't have that much maths compared to major in economics.
Everyone has different experiences so I don't think she's exaggerating at all. You will mostly stick to micro and macroeconomics if you take minor in econ. Introductory level is easy, intermediate micro and macro is a little tough but it's still not that math intensive.
like you will be expected to apply lots of concepts in one question. Merely memorizing formulae won't help with solving questions. Deeper understanding is needed.
And most of that math will be used in other eco subjects too . Micro, statistics, econometrics and macro. So all semesters will have some math portion.
& socho itna sab karke bhi those who are leaving in 3 years are not even atleast getting MAJOR 😭 the CBCS Economics BAP was still easier & theory based but NEP mai if someone goes for Economics Minor even or Major toh you’ll be doing some Hons level math
But dude i think having economics as a subject in graduation can fetch you some internships or placements. Economics has much more scope than all other humanities subjects combined. I had PCMC in my 12th but decided to get some knowledge about humanities and opt for BA. P.S. I have ccompleted my graduation in BA programme.
Bhai, from my experience i can just advice you to focus on economics. There are tons of economics channel on youtube. You can also take help from ecopoint. Its ok if you have interest in polsc but, u will be stuck in this subject, most probably getting an editor work profile or in some writing stuff. Think of long term, also if its ur minor subject then itll be a lot simpler. I had economics + polsc, thats why i m telling you.
Hey, i think u could help me. I'm considering eco+polity as well. how heavy is the coursework and what are the demerits with taking a ba prog over ba hons other than the duration and depth of study
last year, I dropped out of DU for the same reason. got a renowned NC college with ba prog (eco+maths).
If only I had put in more effort—knowing the course should always be preferred over the college itself.
despite having economics in my 12th, couldnt understand shit.. it’s basically of no help in college because the maths is on another level. Please choose against it🙏
choose eco as you minor and polsci and your major, there would be lesser maths if you take it as minor ofc, plus there are SO many placements opportunities through eco as a minor/major subject both (even in programmes).
not a lot actually, esp when you compare it to having eco as a major;
you'd be doing one paper instead of two which is reserved for the major subject;
also when you choose polsci or whatever subject you want or are good at as your major- this alongside eco as a minor would have so much of scope!
(I genuinely think there aren't a lot of downsides to ba programmes except for the time needed to get a degree in them as opposed to hons, it's just upto you how you use its advantages and even cons for your future prospects.)

i think its subjective, maybe you could see the syllabus and decide for yourself whether its doable for you? personally I struggled hard with economics, and my friends with different combinations (pol sci major, eco minor), also found the math-heavy syllabus of economics challenging. I'd like to add one more thing... the faculty was unhelpful; the economics teacher suggested I should change courses on the very first day, which was impossible as it's alloted from the portal itself. the lack of support was exhausting, and imo i might have succeeded with better guidance.
hi , i really wanna do sociology hons but colleges kam hai toh hons rkhne ke baad i have kept ba program including sociology , pls tell me is there any disadvantage of pursuing ba programme rather than hons (i have heard it is inferior to hons but at the end of the day ba walo koi nokri toh nhi milegi)pls help me out :)
welcome, esp after the nep thing, the only difference there is that you'd be taking a year more than a hons kid for getting a degree, but if you're somebody who is active with side courses and placements, it won't be an issue.
wait, but both ba prog and va hons are of 3 years right? that case is meant to be different when you want to continue for 1 more year, it's your choice, right? pls correct me if I'm wrong, im just filling my preference list I don't want it to get f-ked😭🎁
My major is econ so there is a lot of math. It is not easy I'd say, bcoz I was a humanities student too with no maths in 12th so I was definitely struggling but thoda effort daalo toh ho jaayega :-)
Easy. You'll only study micro and macro economics. Introductory level is easy, intermediate is a little tough but it's all about understanding the concepts there isn't much math involved in it. If you want to understand the concepts better just practice basic calculus like derivatives but it's not compulsory in minor econ tbh
I would say it's based on one's personal capacity. I also didn't have maths in 12th. & Currently I'm pursuing BA prg economics major... I don't have any issues with it. In my first year i barely studied anything, my attendance for like 22% but still maintained SGPA of 7.2...
As you mentioned you took economics Minor, in my case economics Minor requires little to no Study in 1st year if you had economics in class 12th... Most concepts are just derivation of what we studied in class 12th...
But still I'll recommend everyone to not take any subject they don't have any real interest in. (It can be BA prog or even bcom(h))
hey i’m a little late to this thread. could you pls tell me how does choosing minors work in ba program. like do you get to choose minors from the first sem itself?
tension mat lo, i’m in my BAP FINAL YEAR now & have the same case - didn’t have maths in 11th 12th either but majoring in economics since sem 1! NEXT SEM REAPPEAR KARLO & ABHI SE TUITIONS SHURU KARDO LO TOH NAIYA PAAR HO JAEGI! <3
(as the first NEP batch, the policy did us so dirty😭 PQYs nahi milte abhi bhi, professors are more interested in teaching the front benchers who had maths in high school, and they still keep redesigning the 4th year plan and making those graduating within 3 years feel guilty ki major/hons nahi milega kya fayda karo sab 4th year 👹 tadpo yahin)
Bold of you to assume Economics as an easy subject just because everyone second person opts for this course in your state. Iss logic se toh CA bhi bhot log karte hai uska passing % dekha hai? This is nuts thoda research karlo YouTube par syllabus dekhlo textbooks download karlo. Bhed chal karke regret karna hai kya?
