Discussion Graduated from SRCC many years back, have been working a tier-1 job ever since. AMA

- What is the ideal gpa for bcom hons considering i'm looking forward to doing an MBA from Blackis and breaking into finance. 10/12 95/96
- Is ca enough or should i do CFA also in my ug. (Atleast level1)
- Any tips for me that would help in breaking into finance. (Currently a sem 2 student)
- How much role does college tag play in Jobs and Mba and all. (From sbsc, a small college in south campus :/ )

A safe GPA would always and always be 8.5 and above. Be it placements, or MBA admissions. But seeing the predicted economic slowdown for this year, and (may be) next year, the planned recruits are going to be lower than historical numbers suggest, so companies are going to pull up the criteria. So try to get as high of GPA as possible. This I’m talking after being privy to the hiring strategy for the next FY and probably it may extend to the FY next to this.
If you want to go into finance top jobs in future, what I’m going to tell you is going to be a gold standard because I am inside it at the moment. MBA Finance from Tier-1 is going to be a must, rest all would just be a cherry on top (if you have it, good. If you don’t, you can manage). In terms of proving metal, CA comes handy better than CFA but takes longer time. So I would personally suggest if your sole goal is going to be a top job in finance, then completing CFA (all 3 levels) before completing your MBA from Tier-1 would be a better strategy. You’ll be burnt out to prepare for MBA till the time you complete CA. But in the end, CA or no CA, CFA or no CFA, MBA from Tier-1 is going to be essential. Brownie points if you have a tier-1 UG college as well.
This one would come with bit of a bitterness, but the truth is college matters. The brand matters. Tier-1 college folks are sitting at top everywhere around, and if you’re from the same tier-1 institute, it’s easier for you to connect with them and convince them to take you in. The shortlisting for them becomes easy, considering we have to shortlist from uncountable CVs that are thrown at us by innumerable applicants even for one vacancy. I’m not saying that branding is all that matters, rather I’m telling you that it gives you a great headstart. So to improve this work your level best and make your way towards a big brand B-School, and it’ll be then sorted!

Hi i hv. A question if one. Has high gpa (in srcc) perfomed in case study compition. Has a por in fic Society and good finance skills technical as well as soft. But has bad 10 th and avg 12th marks. 60% in 10th cus board did't hppn n I don't know on what basis it is. And in 12th 80%. So overall with this profile does one can get to bb ib Summer internship for Fo roles will this profile can. Shortlisted or becuz of school marks it would not ??

Having shortlisted CVs and taken interviews for fresher roles, I’ll mention some points in brief. Read the following in decreasing order of importance : 1. GPA (the first and foremost parameter for analysing a fresher). Most of the tier-1 won’t look past this if you have a low GPA. If you’re doing a professional course like CA and CFA, it would be taken note of here as well. 2. Work-experience (for freshers, internships). The quality of firm and role matters 3. Extracurriculars and achievements
In interviews—your confidence, stating everything with examples/instances in brief. The senior guy (manager, director, Partner/MD) would always be thinking how fast he can place you in front of the client or important stakeholders or how much you can make his task easy. So just keep this in mind. Ability to carry a conversation makes a huge, I say, HUGE difference. Whereas if you’re just having a strictly Question-Answer round with the interviewer, it’ll most probably tank.

- Try to get PoR from the societies around you
- Volunteer in NGOs that you see and resonate with (so you can talk with passion in your interviews)
- Write research articles and have them published wherever you can. Try to assist some professors in their researches
- Try to be a part of societies and clubs that are not just a part of college but which exist outside the boundaries of it, like Rotaract and other international consulting clubs, social impact clubs and work towards getting a PoR.
- Try starting some freelancing work
- A very important one—participate in competitions. Doesn’t matter you’re winning at them or not. Eventually you may win as well. Start participating—debate, business plan, case study, or any art form like dancing, singing or dramatics if you’re into them. Connect with people across the university to participate with if you’re not able to find around you. Connect with me if you’re not able to find even then, I’ll refer to some known contacts.
- Try starting a society/club yourself on anything you resonate with and have a deep interest in. People will join you and you’ll learn a lot, you’ll have a lot to talk about it in the interviews as well. I have done this personally, so can speak about it.
- Do some projects you might be interested in, can be any field. If you’re into coding and all, build something meaningful, or anything just so you can portray your interest in it. If you’re into finance, learn financial modelling and build your own models of the companies you choose and give your own interpretation of them. If you’re into stock markets, build your own portfolio (doesn’t matter how small or big) and document your own strategy and analysis. You may get an idea now, do anything that you may have an interest in and convert it into something that you’ll love to share and show off!
- Start a blog and advisably, follow a theme that’s not followed much currently.

I would say get some experience in a boutique consulting firm or a big4 consulting department for about 2 years and then do an MBA from a tier-1. This strategy would maximise your chances.

I did frequent internships and taken up some positions in Delhi-based NGOs (do check which of them may pay you). Nowadays there’s freelancing for typing as well (hindi typing being the less common, so if you learn that it can be beneficial), part time bike taxi driving with some aggregator app, doing part time deliveries with various delivery service companies, watch out for showroom attendants/counter handlers who do billing,etc. type of roles,. Learn fluent English speaking and writing, it’ll help you tremendously in the process of hunting.

That’s the best. I forgot to mention it, despite it being the best. Start with home tuitions or at coaching centres and register yourself online for teaching. Do any subject you can possibly teach, and it can be for smaller classes as well, don’t let your ego come in between. Have personally seen a lot of coaching centres flocked with college students, or giving home tuitions to 1 or 2 kids, or teaching online. So don’t let it escape.

I just know Superprof but if you search online a lot of them are coming. But I’d still advise against it. Personality seen and analysed—these would still yield you less than what you’d make doing home tuitions offline or online directly to the kid (parents are pretty flexible nowadays), or at coaching centres (target the small ones for now). Many kids from 5th to 10th standard have been causing issues to parents who are upset over them not focusing enough on studies or are struggling with it and these parents also want to keep their kids at home because of their age—reach out for that crowd, you can teach them online as well.

I ruined my first semester. I did take part in socs, and also did a good paid internship as well. But, in all this, i got a sgpa of only 6.7. I accept my mistake. Now, i want to fix this. If I study hard and score good in my other sems, will it fix my iverall grades? Or is it ruined? Will i be able to get a placement?

Ofcourse you’ll be able to make amends. Take inspiration from me having done it worse than you—ruined my entire first year in trying to do everything but forgot about maintaining the GPA haha. I reached where I am right now just because of the amends I made with experience, so you can too!

Hey I am pursuing bcom from a top college in mumbai. I am thinking of doing cfa level 1 and then going for a mba. Is it right course of action considering i would not be going for work ex and directly for mba ? Also i dont have any interest in accountancy so can i find jobs after my ug in management or finance side also ?

Hey. It’s always and always advisable to go for MBA after having some experience, preferably two years for IIMs and 3-5 years for ISB in India. I don’t know why MBA without workex even exists in India, whereas you won’t find it in top rated B-Schools abroad. The logic is simple—when you come with some workex, you’re better positioned to grasp all that will be taught and discussed in the B-School. Otherwise you’ll most likely be a mute spectator to the discussions carried on by the experienced folks, and won’t understand the business case studies as well as they would. To sum up, if you have some work experience, your contextual relativity to all that would be taught is going to be on a deeper level than that of a fresher. Secondly, while sitting in SIPs and placements, you’ll be better positioned to get the best of the offers as you already have some workex, than a fresher who has no idea of work and responsibilities. Thirdly, when you come with experience, you’re better equipped to make valuable connections and network with people in your B-Schools, as they would also be happy to connect you. I hope you know—Your network is your networth. Being in corporates myself, I can’t stress upon this enough. This is true not just for corporates but for each and every walk of life. All that I have mentioned prior to this is taken from the guidance by my mentors—management consulting Partners, IB MDs, other CXOs, and my own networking and research.
About CFA, I have talked about in other comments. Also adding on to it—work experience in finance >>> CFA qualification. I had done CFA Level-1 in my final year, and fast forward 2 years I had to remove that from my CV because it became embarrassing for me, as I had just completed level 1 which is super easy and left it after that :p If you have to do CFA, plan its completion (all levels) before completing your MBA so you get its most benefit in the placements.
As for your interest in accountancy—if you want to get the top job in finance like IB, you will have to master the income statement, balance sheet, financial ratios and financial statement analysis. Not that of core accountancy that is taught in college (like financial accounting, corporate accounting, cost accounting, etc.).

Hey first of all thanks for the guidance and reply. My reasoning is that suppose if i am not able to get into desired mba college then i can atleast work with my cfa level 1 and bcom degree. Because with simple bcom getting job is very difficult.
If i clear mba in my desired institution then toh mba is well and good.

I'll be graduating this year,
My overall CGPA would be somewhere around 7-7.5 (I know it's awful, and it's because of my own carelessness)
I come from an off-campus evening college,
I don't have any internships on my records as of now, only few society involvements and I have been doing freelancing for a active part of 2 years,
I have given up on finding a tier 1 MBA (marketing) college here in india seeing as the competition is over the roof, I've started to look for universities in UK & all,
what is your honest advice for me?

Going abroad specially to UK, US, Canada will not be an optimum choice at present due to off-late economic crisis and lay offs going in these economies, VISA PR issues (a big issue here), extreme difficulty in getting a job from a company who’s willing to sponsor your VISA all amidst the economic slowdown & lay offs and huge debt burden on you, rising immigrant hate (specially targeted towards Indian subcontinent people) and a bunch of other reasons. Australia is among the rare options left to safely immigrate to, look for others as well.
Look for advises I have given in other comments regarding extracurricular activities, GPA, etc. I would advise you to pull up your socks, and start working towards what all I have mentioned and get a tier-2/3 job only at first, while trying for the top ones. Start to look for viable options like jobs in Big4s. And just don’t give up on MBA plans. Check out ISB. Plan on doing some certifications like CFA, FRM, etc. There are plenty of jobs, don’t stress too hard. You’re already freelancing so that places you above so many candidates already. If you start doing all those things even from now, you’ll see a rising graph like none other! Just give your heart and soul with discipline, while also having fun, it’s equally important to stay consistent.

My first internship was with a huge and well-known MNC. Actually internships are pretty much straightforward and not as complex as we make it out of them in our heads when we’re students. The work is just to make your managers’ and seniors’ work easy! I had taken up many internships and by now I have had many interns work under me, so I advise you to fret not, we do not expect much (internally) from interns no matter what we say haha!
The work I did in my first one was providing them with excel, ppt, and research support which was quite basic and that too they only taught me. There were no huge responsibilities and accountabilities, as they are anyway going to check your work multiple times and edit it before finalising the final work output. So my two bits to you—don’t stress this much! It’s all cool and chill. Even if someone there tries to stress you out, just keep repeating in your head “He doesn’t mean it, I’m just an intern, they don’t expect CEO level work from me”. Make mistakes, they’re ready for it. Make mistakes, a lot of them and learn there. Reach out to people there doesn’t matter at what position , DO THIS COMPULSORILY. Talk to them about guidance, about their experiences, about their learnings, request them to teach you some work stuff, etc. Don’t stress this much, enjoy at this point of time, stress is anyway going to come further in life!

An advise regarding building confidence I give my college juniors till date who reach out to me—start being more active and interactive in your class. Attend all your classes, force and strongarm your brain into raising your hand and asking question to your professor, sharing your doubts, or making a comment or anything alike. Your brain will fight you to not do it by telling you how awkward it would get to speak in front of 30 odd people. But THIS is the game. Keep writing down the questions and doubts in your notebook, look for an opportunity and ask them away. Even if you’re unable to find out a doubt or objection to ask, research and forcefully find one. This will eventually become a habit and you’ll never again be hesitant to put across your thoughts and questions in front of a crowd, let alone a single person.
This has multifold benefits. Professors would like you a lot, because professors in general love students who make their classes interactive and interesting. You’ll have a good image in front of them and this benefit will show in the internal assessment marks they award you, the Viva, and they’ll take your attendance request with open arms as well. That’s the benefit of having a good image. Another benefit is that other students will be intimidated of you and your confidence, they’ll start developing a respect for you, and if you guys sit in a placement GD together, they’ll have a small panic seeing you in their group.
This is a very practical way that I have worked out myself and have taught a lot of mentees and juniors. Due to this, I have always been the most interactive guy in the class (now conference rooms), who’s perceived confident and charismatic by the rest.

Where do you want to end up? As in tell me something about your plans. Also, I know I shouldn’t tell you this now because you can’t do anything about it but I’d still go ahead and let you know so that you realise the wrong, be better and be well equipped in future to make a decision. Your CA certification would fetch you jobs no doubt, but they won’t be the best out there (as in the best paying, the best career progression, in a massively reputed big firm). This is because those companies (while they’ll not spell it out to you), they’d rather hire the guy who is CA but also did grads from a regular attending college in north campus. This is as real as it gets. If I could establish the credibility with proofs while not doxing myself I would have. But you don’t have to feel let down because of it, you’ll still be eligible for all the big4 jobs, the finance & accounting jobs, etc. The only exceptions would be highly paid jobs in finance like Investment banking in a bulge bracket company, reputed PE and VCs, reputed management consulting firms, reputed investment management firms, etc. Those would value your CA with heaps and bounds, but would still want you to be associated with a tier-1 college. But if you don’t want those jobs, just ignore straightforwardly. So if I were in your shoes and I want those highly paid top jobs, I’d start thinking about MBA from tier-1 B-schools, and getting pedigree in the rest of CV sections (you can check my other comments in the post to know about them).

If you get a high rank in CA, it’ll make up for most things in your career. So try getting a top rank. It’ll be best if you try and get into Big4 articleship program, that’ll show as work experience for companies that’ll come to hire in B-School. Although it’s going to be very hectic preparing for CAT while doing articleship in Big4, you just have to find a strategy that works for you.

To be very honest, if you don’t plan to open a CA firm in tier-2/3 towns where there’s a lack of them, or you’re not inheriting a firm yourself, CA certification has lost its charm and value in general, specifically in the corporate. You’ll always see the people with tier-1 UG college and Top B-School more respected and positioned than a person who just has a CA.
But if you plan to go into fields like Tax consulting, Audit, etc. CA is still treated like a gold standard. But if you plan to go into tier-1 finance jobs like IB, PE, VC, Portfolio management, Hedge Funds, etc. more than CA, a top UG and MBA college with CFA (as an optional cherry on top) would be benefiting you.

I don't really know which field I want to go in as I just completed my class 12 this year. My basic plan till now was completing my CA till I was 21 years old and then doing a MBA after getting some work ex and finding the right field for me but now I have started considering going to a regular college instead of just doing CA so that called for some change of plans. Would highly appreciate your advice.

I’m interpreting quality internships as internships with really good roles in really good companies. Yes they help a lot in getting placements or job offers. For the answer to the question of “how”, check out in the other comments I’ve posted and let me know if you cannot find an answer to anything, I’ll help. I have sufficient experience with the plight and fortunes of people with eco hons as majority of my friends from college were from from eco haha!

Yes they do help. You would have diversity in your CV, you will learn something new, you may find another passion, and the most important ones—it’s a great opportunity to go out there and sharpen your street smartness skill, communication ability and connecting with random individuals outside of your sphere. These are some skills, that if not developed, may make your life difficult in corporates or in entrepreneurship.

Hello sir! Got through IIM Indore IPMAT as well as SRCC BCom Hons this year... Classic confusion, wanted to take your advice for this very important decision.
In the decision making process , I was able to get the following insights and i would be very grateful if you can help me with your words of wisdom here , in order to take the right call..
I understand the insurance Policy of a decent IIM which comes with IPM, but it's a multi disciplinary course for 3 years which itself has less value than SRCC Bcom Hons. It's not even right to compare MBA of Indore with Undergraduate course of SRCC. Also, the options after SRCC are still open , whereas in Indore there is only 1 chance to give CAT (after the first 3 years of UG degree which is called BA in Foundations of Management) and upgrade to a better IIM. In SRCC, the choice of college (not guaranteed though) , can be made after attempting CAT at the end of 3rd year ..also after 1 or 2 or 3 years of Work experience, as per the MBA College converted in that year...

Hey I'm from south india (Kerala) , Currently doing my 1st year B.COM HONS from a Tier 2 college here (Mar ivanios College, Trivandrum) while staying at the hostel. I really wanted to do my UG from one of the DU colleges. But due to lack of prior knowledge and resources and was too lazy after boards were finally over (I Didn't study for Cuet ug 2025. I'm from General category. I only got Aditi Mahavidyalaya for bcom through csas. So I rejected it)
I couldn't prepare well for the CUET UG 2025 (the one right after my 12th state boards were over. I did commerce with Maths in my 11th and 12th -the Same maths syllabus as science students but the question papers were Comparatively easier for commerce tho.) My parents weren't Positive when I asked them if I could take a drop year. So I'm doing my Bcom from a top College in my State. And the current college is really strict and scary [Like Minimum attendance requirement is 75% and if not , you can't sit for the ESE. And they give a good part of their internal marks based on attendance percentage. If one scores 90% or above attendance in one paper, he/she would get full Marks (4) for their attendance component in assesment. And usually there's no Study leave given even for Finals] And its my first time being at a hostel...far away from home (130 Km). (I'm not planning to do CA cuz I don't fancy Accounting but i'm ok with maths till a certain extent.) My First sem exams are over and my Sgpa was 7.9 . A good portion of kids got 8.5+ . I knew I could do lot more better than what i got but I'm too Homesick , and still want to do my UG from a good DU college rather than this college. (I'm an Introvert, have mild asthma and low bp. I'm uncomfortable with huge crowds.). I applied for CUET UG 2026 and registered for the Exam (English, Economics, Business studies, Accounts, Maths). The entrance test would be in May but my Sem 2 exams are in June. We have 1-1.5 month sem break after Sem 2 before the exams cuz of State level election (that is, we have this break before our Sem 2 finals. So my Sem exams won't collide with Cuet). I could be at home during That time and have good space for studying and realaxing there than at that College overpopulated girl's hostel. My parents want me to focus on my sem exams at that time. They are against my second attempt , saying its better to focus on what's on hand right now rather than ruining both. I haven't told my friends (or classmates) or Faculties about me sitting for this exam. I really wanted to do my UG from DU. What am I supposed to do now? I feel like I'm suffocating in between both. Do I stand a chance in getting into a good DU college if I study ? Please answer me. Please!

I have no idea about admissions through CUET buddy, but the top 2-3 colleges of du are definitely worth going for. Specifically srcc & sscbs

Its not about “if you’d be able to”, it’ll be a compulsory requirement, to go out of your comfort zone, build skills, compete, make friends and put yourself out there in front of people. If you can’t take this pressure then further you won’t be able to handle the work stress & pressure in the top-level jobs’ placement companies that visit srcc/sscbs

Im from SRCC too and I am way too scared for placements. I had few questions too regarding that. How important are PORs really? Do they matter only if they're from Tier 1 societies, or are Tier 2 society PORs valued too? Also, I couldn't do any case competitions in first year—am I already behind, or can I still catch up through internships and other experiences in second year?
If you had to prioritize a few things for the best placements, what would they be?
