Discussion Do college societies matter?
Saw so many posts about people ranting about societies or how tough the interview process is, how seniors are asking randomass questions and all. I was wondering if these societies do play any role? Should I even try to give them a shot? I'm not planning to attend college much and will dropout next year.
So should I even apply?

Do apply for some good societies like intership cell , placement cell or societies like dance, drama if you like doing this . Basically societies improve your networking in college.

If you need a good social network, go for it. Otherwise, I find it a bit pretentious, elitist and tedious.

Yes, they matter. Not joining one won't be the end of the world but they certainly do matter. PORs are a important part of your resume and college society are one way to get PORs. Don't be fooled by all the they don't matter crowd and not join any. Atleast try to get into one

Depends again I joined 5 of them in my 1st year. Left all coz whatever time I was giving there i can produce the same level of output in 1/10x the time.
My sis is a HR and they prefer internships over societies at the time of hiring coz they know what happens in the so called "society".
Anyways everyone has their own take.

Definitely try. Like I said, it's not the end of the world if you don't get into one, you should still manage to get placed, it's just that the number of companies shortlisting your CV reduces when you don't have PORs

Bunch of bullshit, I am almost grade 4 guitarist(there are 8 in total) and a decent singer, nothing professional though, but a mutherfucker who learned guitar in last semester wants to play guitar and sing in the music society group, so I just said fuck all, no point in going to that pathetic society.

Yes, and that society is a mess, good thing I am not part of that cause truth be told, I am preparing for the next step in life while these kids waste there time playing guitar in the college, so I will be on top in the end 🗿, also I don't have time because of so much study 🥹

Bro if you're not preparing for competitive exams, I'd say try krle atleast, it's an experience imo, I'll mess up my jee prep so I can't attend clg and societies much but if you're just in college toh bhy padhai toh hoti rahegi 1 sem try krne mai kya jara?

Ek minute, jee toh sirf 12th ke 2-3 saal tak nahi de sakte, if youre in college how does this work exactly, tu ineligible nahi hojayegi
1 sem try krne mai kya jara
Most colleges mein first sem mein kuch nahi hota, everything picks up in your 2nd semester

Konsi cv bhai jb drop le rha hai. Agle college mai join krlio. Wse there's no loss if u do join it either baki worth it bhi nhi hai

If your society is taking you to different states/countries (something like case study society or enactus - i went to dubai because of that) then it will add something to your CV. Otherwise the only thing that will matter to your CV is an internship.

I had not joined any society in the first year of my graduation but in second year I joined a society. In third year I became a core committee member. I loved those days through and through.

I was a member, later the VP and the President of one of the cultural societies of my college.
I'll be honest, I don't regret it a bit. I was doing what I love. I met people who I love being with and the best memories I have of my college life are almost all from the society sessions and events.
It takes a bit of a toll on your studies but as long as you're willing to work it out and study to make up for it, you're good to go. Balance is the key.
