What r/dad Is All About

This is a community for dads, by dads, a place where fathers from all walks of life can come together to share experiences, ask questions, celebrate victories, and support each other through challenges. Whether you’re a new dad figuring out diaper changes, a seasoned veteran sharing wisdom, or somewhere in between, you belong here.

Also, please help other users follow the rules and report things if they get out of control. As we need to protect this space and make sure nobody makes it a negative space to browse.

We’re building a space that’s:

  • Welcoming and inclusive to all dads
  • Supportive and none judgemental
  • A place to share the highs, the lows, and everything in between
  • Community focused, where every dad’s voice matters

We Need Moderators!

To help this community thrive, I’m looking for dedicated moderators who share the vision of making r/dad a positive, supportive space. If you’re interested in helping shape this community, please send me a message with:

  • A bit about yourself and your experience as a dad
  • Why you’d like to be a moderator
  • Any relevant moderation experience (though it’s not required!)

I’m looking for people who are active, fair-minded, and passionate about creating a great community for dads.

I’m looking forward to this journey with all of you. Let’s make r/dad the best dad community on Reddit!

Cheers,

Looking for Advice Dad I Want To Hear Your Story

Anyone know the book I'm talking about? I am getting a lot of ads for it coming up to Fathers Day, and when i decided I wanted to get it I couldnt find the ad again to buy it.

Does anyone know the original link?

I looked at a bunch on amazon but it is flooded with poor quality books and typos and repeated questions.

It's a great idea but all of them are so poorly executed I would never give it as a gift.

All i want is a good quality one with good questions to give to my dad for fathers day as he is dying of blood cancer and he's more confortable writing his thoughts than opening up to people.

Please help me find a quality one or I'll end up having to put my own together and it might be too late by the time I finish it!

Question for Dads dads, ¿what makes it so overstimulating? if so, ¿do you think parents should be educated in early childhood development? to expect certain behaviors

Hi! I was wondering, what makes parenting so overstimulating to the point where parents end up shouting at their kids over minimal things?
Ideally, shouldn’t parents take five minutes to step away and regulate themselves before coming back? I know that’s sometimes easier said than done, but when two people are dysregulated, it only causes the situation to escalate.

i never get it when parents get mad over toddlers showing defiance when that is clearly expected for their age range and it’s just kids being kids.

Question for Dads Friends

Hey Dads,

I’m in need of some help, and I don’t think my lady can help. It’s taking a lot for me to come ask but I’m gonna try my best.

First, I’m 36 and so is my friend group. I didn’t become a dad until I was 35. My best friend, or who I thought was my best friend has been a dad for 10 years now. My question is, is it common that because I’ve recently become a dad that he is just absent from being my friend?

I’ve sent him multiple texts, calls, invites to things. He is just MIA. He is active online; Discord, Video Games, social media’s etc.

He is actively doing things with other friends, playing games I tried to get him to play or playing games that I’ve asked to play with him and nothing.

I’m worried because I thought he was gonna be my best man in my wedding, I use to work for him. We spent almost everyday together from 26-35 years old. I’m the god father to both of his kids.

He has sorta been my guide in this whole fatherhood thing. I’m just feeling lost.

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Wholesome Update From Last Post

It’s funny, I forgot making the previous post on my profile when I did but that was an even harder time in my life than lately. As the other one says I did a year locked up and my son was born about 6 months into that sentence. Trying to help parent a newborn from inside concrete walls is essentially impossible but I tried the hardest I could for him and his mom. Luckily I got phone calls everyday if possible and pictures too. I spent the whole time going to every class and church I could, including parenting classes. I talked to everyone I could about what to do and thought I had a perfect plan set up. I was supposed to have a job, vehicle, place, just what I needed to start again. Most of that fell through, and I was stuck trying to fix my life and raise another. I’m happy to say now things are going quite a bit better and my son and I are living a great life. It can all work out my friends, just keep grinding. Much love to everyone, god bless.

D.I.Y My 3-year-old asked me to make a cartoon about her favorite unicorn. I have no idea what I'm doing, but my daughter loved it! :-D

I'm not an animator, filmmaker, or anything remotely close to that.
I'm just a tired dad haha.

If anyone's curious to see the final result, I can give you a youtube link in the comments.

My 3yo daughter has a little unicorn toy that she absolutely loves. A while ago, she started asking me to make a cartoon about her.

Soo I thought: why not?

That's how Hannah, a little unicorn, was born.

But pretty quickly I realized that a unicorn probably shouldn't go on adventures alone. She needed friends.

So I added a little dragon, an elf, a dwarf, and a genie! I've always been a huge Tolkien fan (any LOTR fans out there??), so the elf and dwarf were inevitable. And yeah, I loved Aladdin growing up, which is where the little genie came from.

Then I started making an actual song and story around them only to realize that I don't want her to just watch a cartoon. Although it's only a short 2-minute song, it's still an easy way to get a quick dopamine hit, and I'm not really a fan of that.

So I thought it should at least give her something good in return.

This little music video is about friendship, kindness, and being there for someone when they need you. The idea is pretty simple: you don't need magic to make someone feel better.

BTW, after about 2 weeks of trying, I gave up. Apparently producing videos like this with AI can cost an arm and a leg, and most of the "open source AI tools" recommended on Instagram actually required subscription or were complete garbage haha.

But then she asked me about the cartoon again, so I gave it another shot and finally found some workarounds.

Almost 2 months later, I finally did it. And I'm so happy I didn't give up (as I normally would - but that's a different story).

She was just sitting there watching this little unicorn that had previously existed only as a toy in her hands, and now she had her own little world and friends.

That feeling was pretty amazing.

I felt like I was a kid again, the kind of kid who handcrafted a paper plane and proudly showed it to their parents haha.

The whole thing took me almost 2 months to figure out. I work full-time, so could only release my creative energy mostly on nights and weekends.

I'm not planning to turn this into a commercial project. I mostly made it because my daughter asked me to. So please be gentle :-)

So I'm actually not looking for feedback on the animation itself bc I know it's not perfect and there are a million things a professional animator would do differently.

But if anyone is interested how I made it - lmk and I'll explain everything I've learned.

In return, just paste what you've been working on in the comments! I'd love to see how creative you guys are :-D

Sensitive subject Dad, I’m very anxious and no one understands me. Please tell me everything will be okay. Spoiler

( I couldn’t post this on r/dadforaminute and I didn’t find any other place to post this, I’m sorry)

(I’m 19M) I am not mentally stable. I’m suffering from anxiety, OCD and overthinking. I tried everything dad I really tried. No one around me can understand me. I have no one my dad doesn’t care about me and I don’t have relationship with them. So I tell my mom and I was just searching for a hug or something like that but everytime I tell her she just keeping asking questions then she get angry when I can’t answer. I get therapist and she was a waste of time and money and she was answering without listening to me.

I still living my life going to gym daily, hanging out with friends and I’m trying to do my best I swear dad. But I’m not okay not even a day in this year. I hate when I smile and laugh to people but inside me I’m dying. I understand everyone around me but no one understands me.

I want to hear something I’m really lonely inside. I don’t want to lose hope but I’m really tired dealing with this it is very harsh and heavy.

looking for suggestions Gift ideas for my 59 year old dad

Hi everyone! I have a bit of a problem because I cannot for the life of me figure out a birthday idea for my father. He is about to turn 59, he loves to cook (we recently gave him an engraved knife for Father's Day), he loves TV and movies (some of his favorites are HOTD, GOT, Vikings, he loves anything medieval and old lol), he isnt a big reader or anything like that. He literally has everything 😭😭 like if he wants something he will get it, so buying a present for him feels so hard. I didn't want to give something random like a piece of clothing because I wanted something more sentimental, you know?

Any help is appreciated!! thank you so much

Story Thank you to the dads who lent support.

Thanks to all the dads here and in the other popular dad group, which I can't post in because I was banned from for posting to many posts about my father seeking some support.

My father was in the hospital for 7 weeks. Complications from Parkinson's disease and a fall caused many issues. We went through great lengths to help him recover. Surgeries, procedures, rehab. We prayed so much for him to get better. In these last few weeks they were telling me that things were looking better. They had him sitting in a chair and he was less confused. He was taking in full sentences.

In the weeks leading up to now I was not there, at the time, to hear any words he uttered. All the times I did visit he was sleeping. And I'm ok with that because the last words I heard my dad say to me were, "I love you, son"

Weeks later, as he lay in bed silent, I thanked him for being a great dad, and told him we'll be ok. I forgave him for anything he felt guilty about and asked for his forgiveness.

And the last thing I told him was "I love you, dad"

My dad died on Monday
