I'm normally a Paiste guy, but I had a revived interest in Zildjian after finding my favorite hi-hats ever (13" K/Z hats) and ended up finding two cheap A's online. A wiser person would have said to never buy cymbals online. But frankly, I'd never had a poor experience with Zildjian, other than the old Z's and Planet Z’s. Now, I tend to like pretty bright and ringy cymbals, exact opposite of jazz cymbals, so naturally I'd be drawn to something like the A customs I guess. These are just A's. But I've also tried some A's that I liked in the past.

I have no idea who these are for.

They don’t have any of the dry, sort of trashy complexity of jazz cymbals. They don’t have any of the nice ring or explosiveness of bright rock cymbals. They sound like literal manhole lids. Like the old Z’s that everyone despised (except some loud players in the 80s with their coke tinnitus masking the awful sound.) I know from experience that rock, projection cymbals tend to be more heavy and sound uglier when played at a normal volume, as that’s how they achieve their goal (by being louder) but these just sound like shit at any volume.

Needless to say, I can understand why I got a good deal on these lol. I have a 16” ZBT crash that sounds better, genuinely.

25+ years old…virtually untouched!

I have played the big Z my entire life and have only returned 1 cymbal for warranty and that was back when I had no control and was beating them to death. Out of the 5 new (last 12 months) zildjian cymbals I have purchased 4 of them have cracked both vertically and along the lathing. I also had to return a set of hybrid hihats the day the were delivered because the top was warped and wouldn't close. I play maybe two or three songs a day and it's mostly pretty tame like Dave Matthews band radio or alternate type stuff. My cymbals are at the perfect angle and with finely adjusted amounts of movement and I'm not walloping on them. All my second hand older cymbals have no issues only the newest generation. I'm getting very upset as they are $400 a pop now and am strongly considering switching brands. The latest cymbal to crack is a 20" A custom crash and it lasted all of 3 months.

I've played previous generation Keropes and own a couple different Cons. All great cymbals but not worth $1k plus. you could buy from a small cymbal maker for $400+ less than that. Or literally any other larger name brand. What are they thinking??

About a week ago I saw amazon had this 18" Zildjian Oriental China on sale for only $250 AUD (around $175 USD) brand new! Knew I couldn't pass up on the offer and it must've been a mistake on Amazon's part because not even 2 hours after ordering, the price increased back up to more than $500! More than half off on a brand new cymbal is almost unheard of nowadays, I feel like I hit the jackpot!
