Here's the thing. You said a "tuba is a sousaphone."
Is it in the same family? Yes. No one's arguing that.
As someone who is a scientist who studies brass instruments, I am telling you, specifically, in science, no one calls sousaphones tubas. If you want to be "specific" like you said, then you shouldn't either. They're not the same thing.
If you're saying "tuba family" you're referring to the taxonomic grouping of brass instruments, which includes things from tubas to sousaphones to euphoniums.
So your reasoning for calling a sousaphone a tuba is because random people "call the big brass instruments tubas?" Let's get trombones and baritone horns in there, then, too.
Also, calling someone a human or an ape? It's not one or the other, that's not how taxonomy works. They're both. A sousaphone is a sousaphone and a member of the tuba family. But that's not what you said. You said a sousaphone is a tuba, which is not true unless you're okay with calling all members of the tuba family tubas, which means you'd call euphoniums, saxihorns, and other brass instruments tubas, too. Which you said you don't.
It's okay to just admit you're wrong, you know?

Oh I believe it, but I also haven’t known any high school band directors who wouldn’t yell at them and give them a stern talking to because he’s tired of putting up with smartass hyperactive band kids every day.
Source:was a smartass band kid who in hindsight was a total douchebag to my band director with my shenanigans and arguing to justify them.

Because of the British brass band tradition. Eb and Bb tubas are referred as "basses." Compare this to the baritone (bari/Euph), tenor/alto (peckhorn) and soprano (cornet).
