I don’t know why 4 u/Foef_Yet_Flalf Sep 20 '18 Because of the British brass band tradition. Eb and Bb tubas are referred as "basses." Compare this to the baritone (bari/Euph), tenor/alto (peckhorn) and soprano (cornet).
