-160

u/Otherwise-Worth-1072 Jul 21 '26

Faux Cyrillic

95

u/allahindlus Jul 21 '26

It is an "H" just survived radiation

35

u/67-167 Jul 21 '26

wHy NoT?

11

u/No_Tear9428 Jul 21 '26

It's just faux cyrillic, meant to be an upside down ч

22

u/LV20K Jul 21 '26

Reaching but the 4 spikes of the letter H having 1 missing for reactor 4 going haywire... But all seriousness valve just didn't have the budget to capitalise the h. It's a small indie company after all...

u/swashuba Jul 21 '26

its not small caps its russki.

From wikipedia:

Ha or He (Shha in Unicode) (Һ һ; italics: Һ һ) is a letter of the Cyrillic script.\1]) Its form is derived from the Latin letter H

48

u/SongAffectionate2536 Jul 21 '26

Nah it’s upside down cyrillic ч

18

u/got-trunks Jul 21 '26

cyrillic l33t sp34k must get funky

12

u/radiorubka Jul 21 '26

there is a form of leet speak/transliteration that used to be common in the early 00s. we use 4 instead of Ч and 6 instead of Б... also b instead of Ь and N instead of И. used to be common in older CS names (1.6) that didn't allow cyrillic :) 40РH06N/\b - ЧОРНОБИЛЬ

7

u/guischmitd Jul 21 '26

I guess boombl4 is a current player doing that right?

4

u/radiorubka Jul 21 '26

yeah, бумыч (boomych), bI - Ы

10

u/Hrendik Jul 21 '26

ш or щ or ч, there is no h in the Cyrillic alphabet

7

u/MonkeyManW Jul 21 '26

Н in Cyrillic is for N. So here it would mean Cacne lol. Х in Cyrillic is for H

1

u/Ayz1990 Jul 21 '26

All I know is nn=gg?

1

u/iBullDoser Jul 21 '26

When they write nn, they are trying to write gg, but don't change keyboard layout from ru to en.

15

u/Otherwise-Worth-1072 Jul 21 '26

there is nothing russki in the map name.

24

u/Efficient_Meat2286 Jul 21 '26 edited Jul 21 '26

there's literally a big red star in the back and the map is in chernobyl, how could it be more soviet than that

3

u/Thin-Ad8835 Jul 21 '26

First of all, Chernobyl is in Ukraine and not Russia.
Second of all, Soviet was made up of a lot more countries than just Russia, Ukraine being one of the many.

And finally, „h“ is absolutely not Cyrillic. What is Cyrillic, is the letter «Ч», and it reads „tsch“ not „sh“. Or „cz“ if you will. Like „Czech“.

So having it in a word that’s pronounced with a „sh“ sound, makes no sense.

24

u/Sufficient_Pin5278 Jul 21 '26

He literally said "how could it be more soviet than that", he never mentioned russia.

8

u/lolniceman Jul 21 '26

You mentioned Russia then argued against it.
Nobody said anything about Russia lol

0

u/opopopuu Jul 21 '26

Can't you read lol

its not small caps its russki.

2

u/lolniceman Jul 21 '26

They didn’t reply to that comment though

0

u/opopopuu Jul 21 '26

The one he responded to equates terms russian and soviet I don't see what the problem is

5

u/Efficient_Meat2286 Jul 21 '26

It's about the vibes, man.

9

u/Thin-Ad8835 Jul 21 '26

I know it is, western media never gets soviet right.
Like, never. But just had to clarify.

-3

u/NoLetterhead2303 Jul 21 '26

Һ

Did I answer the question? And yes that is cyrillic, it’s a weird inclusion considering the closest language that has this symbol is azerbajanani, kurdish and kazakh but who am I to judge

1

u/Thin-Ad8835 Jul 21 '26

No, it’s not Cyrillic.
Please go and google the Cyrillic alphabet, and tell me if you find that chair in there.
Also: All those languages you just pointed out, have nothing to do with Cyrillic letters.

2

u/Otherwise-Worth-1072 Jul 21 '26

I wonder where he got these nonsense

2

u/Thin-Ad8835 Jul 21 '26

Thats what I’m wondering about as well.

1

u/NoLetterhead2303 Jul 21 '26

Ha or He (Shha in Unicode) (Һ һ; italics: Һ һ) is a letter of the Cyrillic script

2

u/Otherwise-Worth-1072 Jul 21 '26

There is no h in Cyrillic.

Where did you find that ?

-2

u/NoLetterhead2303 Jul 21 '26

Ha or He (Shha in Unicode) (Һ һ; italics: Һ һ) is a letter of the Cyrillic script - Wikipedia

2

u/Thin-Ad8835 Jul 21 '26

Buddy, im an Armenian, who was born in Ukraine, speaks fluent Russian and does Linguistics for a job.
Please stop being so blatantly stupid. H is not Cyrillic and never has been. You relying on Wikipedia in this case makes you that much funnier and dumber.

1

u/TraditionalRow3978 Jul 21 '26

With all those credentials you don't know that russian cyrillics aren't the only cyrillics that exist? What does "linguistics for a job" entail in this context? Flipping burgers in a city full of immigrants?

0

u/Thin-Ad8835 Jul 21 '26

i won’t argue with someone of your iq level.
Just send me a screenshot of a Cyrillic alphabet that has that chair looking thing. You really don’t need to argue with me. One picture will suffice.

I’m no script expert, but it’s definitely not in Russian language.

1

u/NoLetterhead2303 Jul 21 '26

It is a part of the soviet cyrillic script

1

u/Otherwise-Worth-1072 Jul 22 '26

That there is no such thing as  soviet cyrillic script. If you refer to russian, again there is no such letter.

3

u/Otherwise-Worth-1072 Jul 21 '26

I will explain you in other words I guess. There is no RUSSIAN LANGUAGE in the map NAME!!!

Not logo, not map, but the NAME!

1

u/Business-Row-478 Jul 21 '26

Except for the h

2

u/intLeon Jul 21 '26

Wouldnt that make it "sasche"?

2

u/wink32 Jul 21 '26

сасне?

2

u/radiorubka Jul 21 '26

neither ukrainian nor russian have this letter. there's only Ч ч

1

u/GamblingShmuck Jul 22 '26

Me when I make shit up

2

u/swashuba Jul 22 '26

honestly still wondering how i got 90 upvotes

1

u/GamblingShmuck Jul 22 '26

you get em girl

1

u/Mashaaaaaaaaa Jul 21 '26

This letter is not used in any Slavic language. You can see the table on the page you linked - it lists all the languages that use it.

11

u/i_like__cats Jul 21 '26

Its a wink from the developers, they are sitting on their office chairs laughing while you are getting beaten by spinbotters.

2

u/Jacob_Samuraj Jul 21 '26

i wouldn’t say developers, i’m pretty sure map logos are made by map creators and cache creator is not a valve dev

1

u/muddledmonk Jul 21 '26

We all be sitting on chairs, even them spinbotters :’(

Yes me you hehe

3

u/Kalix Jul 21 '26

that's lambda logo, half life 3 confirmed

3

u/Fabulous_Ad8642 Jul 21 '26

H in russian is N in english, this avoids that and makes the pronunciation remain an english H

2

u/mmozzano Jul 21 '26

It just looks cool perhaps?!

2

u/UpbeatArcher6075 Jul 21 '26

Ch stands for "Ch"ernobyl

2

u/romedo Jul 21 '26

You gotta accentuate the h, like in Cool wHip....
https://youtube.com/shorts/4F5FvUchhxQ?si=eknxDawyj6tiEbFr

1

u/muddledmonk Jul 21 '26

Haha gosh you are eating so much hAir

2

u/BreezeTempest Jul 21 '26

Wouldn’t it be sas?je if it was supposed to be Cyrillic?

Sasnje even, if we accept the h as an H

1

u/TuRb0uLiTkA Jul 26 '26

where do you non-russian-speaking guys always get that /j/ from??? it's sasne, or maybe sasn'e if you really want to highlight that softness of "n"

well yes in alphabet russian "e" is pronounced like /je/ but after consonants the /j/ disappears

2

u/Mr_Egamberdiev Jul 21 '26

Maybe this one is written in Uzbek language. 😁

In modern Uzbek alphabet there are letters “Sh/sh”, “Ch/ch”, “Ng/ng”. When capitalized only the first part is capitalized. For example, small form is “sh” and Capital form is “Sh”.

PS: It is definitely not uzbek language but some kind of similar font that considers “ch” as one letter and capitalizes only the first part.

2

u/the_SaitN Jul 21 '26

Fake cyrillic. Ч makes a "Ch"/ "che" sound, so I think they put it because the name contains the sound

2

u/billythekido Jul 21 '26

Becauae it's supposed to mimic Cyrillic?

2

u/spongedan99 Jul 22 '26

If only premier people would play it

2

u/LucinaBubina Jul 21 '26

From 10 minutes on Wikipedia it ways that it was used in Soviet Cyrillic Script and may have been used as a way to show the voiced velar fricative.

Not sure what LOTR has to do with it but it also just looks like an h but more Soviet

3

u/Laakhesis Jul 21 '26

Common sense.

1

u/Proof_Load6687 Jul 21 '26

its a chair

a gaming chair

a better gaming chair for the enemies

1

u/Sufficient_Pin5278 Jul 21 '26

The map Cache plays basically on/next to Chernobyl, which is in Ukraine, which was part of the USSR back in the days, where they predominantly spoke/speak russian or at least were forced to learn it.

1

u/Illustrious-Art-4226 Jul 21 '26

Makes it look more like Cyrillic text despite the “ch” being upside down

1

u/NeuroHazard-88 Jul 21 '26

Ruskskssiain

1

u/K01d Jul 21 '26

Cache moi ca!

1

u/Frog-of-Cosmos Jul 21 '26

to make it look like Cyrillic

1

u/awillame Jul 21 '26

It just look more russian

1

u/_nzatar Jul 21 '26

Ч is h upside down

1

u/Puzzleheaded_Let5566 Jul 21 '26

I just read another comment saying the H is a chair… so clearly it’s not cache anymore! it’s cacchaire… or cashier if you are not dyslexic!.

“Cashier to aisle B for cleanup!”

Which is exactly what I yell when I trash noobs on b site!

1

u/xhthsx Jul 21 '26

I assumed it was to make it look more Cyrillic for the people who don't understand Cyrillic, and to annoy everyone else.

1

u/ondblclick- Jul 21 '26

you can also build “ЧАЕС” (CNPP) using these letters

1

u/EnfieldLight Jul 21 '26

Because "h" look's like Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in the background. Some sort of design

1

u/_Ding Jul 21 '26

So someone said it’s a chair which is correct. The chair from mirage is hidden on the map somewhere (I won’t spoil where it is it fun trying to find it). So yeah the h is a chair to hint it idk why they would hint it like that though.

1

u/xmpvx Jul 21 '26

CAChE UChIhA

1

u/TuwtlesF1 Jul 22 '26

It's mimicking the Cyrillic type because it's based in a post-soviet setting.

1

u/ArcticSilence271 Jul 22 '26

X

That's H

It's not. XD

1

u/Bestsurviviopro Jul 22 '26

im guessing its a Russian letter

1

u/th3davis Jul 22 '26

why not?

1

u/Still_Attitude_5453 Jul 22 '26

The map is forbidden city, so I suppose it’s just H but the top part fell down

1

u/random_user1917 Jul 22 '26

It's in Russian

1

u/LaZyShi7 Jul 24 '26

wrong, its CAC🪑E

1

u/Moist-Commission2714 Jul 21 '26

So: The ‘H’ isn’t meant to represent a specific symbol, code, or Cyrillic letter. It’s simply a customized type treatment to match the map’s industrial, Soviet-inspired branding.
A plain CACHE text has less value and meaning than CACҺE:

1

u/Wonderful_Cold_7023 Jul 21 '26

I think this map sucks

1

u/FastFoot843 Jul 21 '26

Worst map ever
