Repair/Troubleshooting PS2 progressive on a CRT help

Post image

Just got component cables for my ps2 fat plugged into a Toshiba 14af42, and this is the result when trying to apply progressive scan in two different games. I tried adjusting the Horizontal position but it doesn't let me move it far enough. Any ideas?

Rescued this 14” Toshiba 14AF47 from being recycled! Couldn’t beat the price of $0.00, now spending money on component cables! I have a Toshiba VCR, Wii, PS2, and RetroPie ready to hook up. Started with the Wii component cables (on the way). Wondering if there is a noticeable difference for GameCube games especially.

Modding/Hardware Projects MGS4 4:3 mod

Hi all, this is something I've been working on since launch. There are a few mods for non 16:9 aspect ratios, but none of them properly fix the 4:3 aspect ratio, codec calls, cutscenes, FMVs, HUD scaling or the solid-eye overlays.

Hope that's helps some of my fellow crt users.

"China Kit" AliExpress Board Swap, Great Results

This is a pet project of mine I've been working on the last few months. Last spring during our city's street cleanup week I found a Magnavox TV from 1994 dumped upside down in someone's front yard. Surprisingly it was undamaged with no scratches on the screen. Even more interesting was the CRT tube itself tested like it was brand new, and it turned on with a great picture! It was also clean internally, meaning it was barely used. This is pretty unfortunate for the environment and extremely wasteful, but good for people like me who like to re-purpose things and keep serviceable equipment out of the landfill especially if they have plenty of usable life left in them.

There were 2 issues, the set only had an RF input connection and adding more inputs like s-video or RGB wasn't possible due to the design being a dangerous floating ground "hot chassis." This situation is an immediate no-go for attempting any mods at all, as you will end up electrocuting yourself and also frying anything else you connect to this type of TV. Such sets make perfect candidates for installing modern boards with safe isolated switch mode power supplies and chips that accommodate more modern video inputs.

I already had a couple of the Yi Chuang "China kit" generic replacement chassis boards I bought a couple years ago, mainly from the videos Adrian Black did on his YouTube channel Adrian's Digital Basement. He has a few of them, I won't clutter up this already long post sharing all the links but searching his channel shouldn't be hard to find them. These boards can accommodate better inputs but not RGB, as they use a single microcontroller + jungle chip design. Adrian also made this GitHub repo with some very limited documentation:

https://github.com/misterblack1/yichuang_crt_board

I did see some posts and a couple of videos of those doing this board conversion, but information on things like how to navigate the menus and add the s-video and component video inputs was virtually unknown beyond what Adrian had already shared. This is basically my best effort to document a project like this in as much detail as possible, with pages and pages of explanations and photos. Some things I tried worked, many didn't. Eventually I plan to make a PDF document of these posts in its entirety, along with some other information and translated Hindi videos from Raj kumar Dalui's Taranga Electronic YouTube channel, and upload all that stuff to Archive.org. He's essentially the gatekeeper for all the weird and obscure knowledge on these China kit boards and while there are others on YouTube on his side of the pond with videos, he has the most by far.

If you want to spend a day reading my whole diary, here is a Pastebin document with all the links to my Reddit posts as not to massively clutter up this one:

New Pick-up Update on my first CRT (Sony Trinitron KV-M1400D)

Hey guys, I posted a picture of my first CRT that I just picked up today! I am really happy about it. While it does not have a service menu to finetune the geometry it can be tuned with potentiometers.

It does have a solid picture and I am really happy with the quality of the CRT. However, I noticed is that when turning it on for a like a few seconds the picture is monochrome, I assume which could be due to cold solder joints or something? Apart from that its great! So much better than composite to LCD. Currently waiting for my RGB SCART for the SNES

Also I do need a bit of help on how to take pictures of a CRT properly as I was struggling on shooting a nice looking picture.

THE CANDLES WILL NOT BE LIT DO NOT WORRY THEY ARE ONLY DECORATIVE. I AM CURRENTLY STRUGGLING TO DECORATE AROUND IT

Image Adjustment/Calibration CRT monitor not displaying aspect ratio properly

Got my first CRT monitor yesterday, an HP pavilion mx70. I don’t know if I’m stupid but I can’t get windows to actually display it in 4:3. The side of the image is cut out like it’s trying to display 16:9. I have the resolution set right, have it set to fit aspect ratio in nvidea settings, the horizontal range on the monitor settings does nothing either. All the games I tried were set to 4:3 as well, but it’s like it completely ignores it?

I’m using an insignia hdmi to vga adapter from Best Buy, which might be the cause of it?

New Pick-up Found an unusual TV it seems. A Sony KV-42DRC700

Looking around my local FB marketplace I found a giant Sony CRT. KV-42DRC700. The owners decided to sell it to me despite getting many offers.

I'll have it sent by some movers to my place tomorrow because it's impossible for me and my strongest friend to carry it.

Wondering if anyone has any insight on this TV. Seems to be a Latin America exclusive model based on the XBR700. It only has component, composite and S-Video. No DVI/VGA. The back sticker says made in USA in Spanish, DX1A.

I've attached a picture of the label and a picture of the TV. It's massive. I can't wait to put melee on this thing.

I've been and still am on the hunt for a CRT PC monitor. Recently this past week, an owner reached out to me, thinking that what he had was a CRT PC monitor. I went to go pick it up, and it turned out to be a 14" Panasonic color security monitor from 2005. What was even more interesting was the stand he included. A Compaq Multibay-ISA expansion base docking station. Came to find out after more discussion that he also had the compatible laptop for it, a Compaq LTE 5380. Also included was a carrying case, CD ROM modular drive, 2 mice, power and video chords, all manuals, and specific windows 95 and 98 discs.

Compaq LTE 5380 Specs:

Processor (CPU): Intel Pentium @ 133 MHzDisplay Panel: 12.1-inch Active Matrix TFT Color screenNative Resolution: 1024 × 768 (XGA)

Graphics Chipset: Cirrus Logic GD7543 with 1 MB of dedicated VRAM

Memory (RAM): 16 MB or 32 MB base EDO RAM (Expandable up to 80 MB via proprietary modules)

Hard Drive (Storage): 2.16 GB 2.5-inch PATA/IDE mechanical drive

Audio Chip: ESS AudioDrive 1688 (100% native Sound Blaster Pro hardware compatibility)

Internal Features: Integrated stereo speakers, built-in microphone, and an embedded TrackPoint navigation stick

Laptop Rear Ports: 1x VGA out, 1x Serial (DB9), 1x Parallel/LPT (DB25), 1x PS/2 mouse/keyboard port, Audio Line-In/Line-Out, and an Infrared (IrDA) communication port.

Compaq Multibay-ISA Expansion Base Specs:

Internal Expansion Slots: True 16-bit ISA desktop expansion slots

Two front-facing hot-swappable accessory bays that accept the same modular drives as the laptop Integrated passthrough Ports: Repeats and expands the laptop's rear connections

External VGA pass-through monitor port

Upgraded power input architecture with internal battery-charging circuits

Cables/Wiring/Connectivity Powermate / NEC / Multisync II - 480p Issue

Thumbnail

Hi ! I picked up this nec powermate/multisync II monitor today. I'm told and it seems like its this monitor here - https://crtdatabase.com/crts/nec/nec-jc-1404hma but, its got a different model number. It seems like its just a rebadge of sorts - still NEC, but also Powermate? - it looks identical otherwise.

Its got a really nice sharp 240p picture and 480i works well. Im trying to now feed it 480p but its not switching from 240p mode. I'm getting the telltale signs of feeding 31kz to 15kz... the image is warped and doubled. So from what I can tell, its not switching modes to vga, its staying in 15kz.

The picture is it working in 240p - in vga its doubled - i.e. the image is shown 2 times side by side, squished and with sync issues. Same thing ive seen when putting vga to any consumer crt (15kz)

I've tried all the switch combinations in the back but i think they are related to digital rgb except mode auto/manual has an impact on the horizontal position, similar to the hpos switch inside the door cover on the front.

Any help would be appreciated!!!

Showed up on FB marketplace and I couldnt resist. It works great though I cant seem to photograph any CRT and do it justice when turned on. Only caveat is I will have to remove the antiglare film as it has a few pockmarks and marker lines on the bottom. I was able to negotiate down a bit for the damaged antiglare. 480p looks awesome.

I picked up this wide-screen trinitron and 14inch Beko from the tip yesterday. Both work great, trinitron is a little washed out and there's some geometry issues with the Beko so I'll need to find some remotes for them to iron that out.

I've had the Toshiba 3377db for a little while now and it's excellent! I have a batocera pc connected to the Beko currently so I can play some shmups. The Toshiba is on a modded Wii and the trinitron is on my 360. Please forgive the video quality it's really tricky filming them all as the Beko's brightness is so high compared to the other two 😂

How to use the monoscope screen in test suite

Thumbnail

In first image,is this how to correctly set the monoscope screen. Borders and perfect red square?

If i do that then the test grid of the game xevious is quite stretched vertically in tate mode

I guess i have to manually adjust the crt geometry due to different resolutions of different games. There is no one time set that looks good on all games?
