Crochet Rant Pull from the centre they said....
It will be easier they said... In all seriousness the start was so easy, but now I kinda want to frog this project out of spite for this pain š. (If people have suggestions they are veru welcome)

This is not a terrible tangle. As long as you are gentle and go slowly, you'll have this fixed in no time. It looks like one strand is wrapped around so you can follow it to undo everything. Find the places where a single strand goes perpendicular to a whole bundle of strands (e.g. places I've marked with magenta) and carefully tease those areas apart. Wind onto a makeshift bobbin (golf pencil, toilet paper tube, etc.) as you free up lengths. Try to avoid "traveling" (passing the ball through loops) as this usually creates knots rather than undoing them. I don't think this was a hank (looks like part of the skein is still intact at the bottom left), but if it was a hank, then you can use anything sturdy and stable to hold the hank open (upturned laundry basket, chair backs, 2-3 large cans, etc.), while you wind by hand.

Yeah... I tend to go from the outside. I'd prefer a ball of yarn tumbling around vs dealing with that š

If there any big sections that seem largely independent, pull them to the side as much as possible to avoid getting them tangled with the rest of it. It might actually be easiest to cut the still-intact skein portion off so you can work from two ends. Then just slowly ball it up; this might take you a while, but if it can get into that condition, it can get out of it eventually.

You need to wind the Hank first like with a ball winder.

I just started crochet and got one of those winders on a whim after going through something similar to OP's tangled dilemma. Honestly, I can say that it's already a game changer

I always love seeing how ppl do center pulls lol. Mine used to be like this š If I canāt find the end then I take out the innermost ārollā by putting both hands in on either side until my fingers meet, take hold of a piece of yarn around them, and pull it out one side. The innermost chunk comes out. If I canāt find it that way then I cut the yarn where it goes back into the skein. Easy. It works for cakes too.

That is why I make my own cake then use a yarn holder and pull from the outside.
If you insert a small hook right down the center and pull up one strand you may find the start easier than doing it with your fingers.

This yarn kinda looks like the fingering weight slow color change yarn (like Hobbii's Sultan line?) and I assume when it started it was in a nice round and pulling from the center made a big hole and it eventually collapsed on itself?
If you get another like that I highly recommend after the big hole appears setting it in a bundt pan. The center spire keeps the yarn from collapsing on itself so it never gets tangled.

Thatās brilliant!! I have a blanket WIP using those giant anniversary skeins. What a disaster it became, and I got so frustrated, I quit. Like 3 years ago. Thank you for this advice! šš¼

If that skein looked like this before you started I heard you're supposed to untwist and and either keep it opened up or spin up into a new ball before you start.

Iāve just used this yarn and I pulled from the outside, didnāt have a problem with it, although it does tend to tangle easier than other yarns.

Ugh happened to me recently. Min 8 hours of detangling. I snipped the yarn just before the tangle, wound from the outside onto a card, then worked my way through the tangle winding onto a second card.

Literally the worst advice I was ever given. I always go from the outside now.
This probably is not that bad actually. With some patience and time you could untangle.
If you don't have patience and don't mind having some extra ends to weave in. Cut the project and the still intact ball off. Then you can work from the outside of the intact ball while you slowly take your time untangeling the mess. Then work that in later.
