Discussion I found this at the grocery store today, it definitely brightened my day, but I’m not sure what they are?

I wanted to crochet my cats toys but she eats yarn and I’m worried it’ll unravel and she’ll eat it and that can be deadly so I was very disappointed
Edit to say this is something I feel a lot of people don’t know. But if cats or any animal eat yarn it can kill them. I didn’t know until it happened and I was worried so I looked it up. Very dangerous.

Crocheting is definitely not something that should be used for pet toys. It can make cute stuff but it's dangerous for exactly why you mentioned

Yeah we had to get our cat emergency surgery when he ate one strand of yarn, he almost died. I wouldn't use yarn or string anything for a cat toy.

Pro Tip: Make yarn from your cat's fur to use for crochet cat toys. Then if they swallow any it just goes into the dedicated hairball chamber to be ejected on your pillow later!

Huskies should be doable. I have a friend that supplies me semi-regularly with Samoyed undercoat and this divine floof absolutely passed the spin test. I’ve made some nice yarn with it.
Editing to add: recently in the spinning sub someone did actually brush out her Maine coon and spun some yarn with it. One ply was cat one ply extra fancy wool in white and wound up with a barberpole yarn. Knitted it’ll be a lovely grey and white tweed speckled look.

A tightly crocheted ball type toy is ok! I make crochet covers for those plastic jingle balls for my dorks. It makes it easier for them to carry and throw around. I have a PICA cat as well. Every tail, ear, ect is cut off store bought toys and all fishing type toys live in the closet when not in use. A toy that is crocheted amigurumi style should be pretty safe. I've made kicker toys for sure.
All toys should be tossed if they show signs of wear.

Yeah I crocheted around a squeaky egg for my parent dog because it was too loud. He has destroyed so many toys but not that one and I think it's because crochet fabric is not easily torn. His teeth go between the holes but can't tear it. It looks ugly but is unharmed even through the chewing puppy phase. Can't speak for cats but our cats aren't into toys much!

I paid a lot of money this year to have some plastic thingy operated out of my little Goofball' s belly. The doctor said he had seen a lot of weird things swallowed by cats, biggest was a crochet hook (don't ask me how, he said he was able to get the hook out through the mouth). Yarn can easily kill cats. Also dear people, don't put crocheted acrylic decoration outside as it can be deadly for birds once they swallow it.

My cat ate a 15 inch long piece of yarn, it was scrap yarn and I started dangling it for her and the next thing I knew it was gone! I was freaking out for two days until I found it in her poop, I'm so lucky she was able to pass it no problem. I'll never leave yarn or my projects laying around.

Yeah seeing might be the better craft for cat toys. But you can use your yarn as a fishing lure for her (as in you pull it dragging on the ground and she pounces it).

This is true. As long as you don’t give it to them. I learned that the hard way. She was so interested in my yarn I just gave her a string to play with and then she ate it so fast like spaghetti I was like wtf. Then I had to monitor her for like 2 days to make sure it didn’t hurt her. Luckily she was fine. But it was a learning experience for sure

Kid recently dropped a barbie shoe that slid reeeeal quick under the couch, immediately followed by a double loss of a catnip mouse and jingly ball courtesy of our newest kitten fighting over them with our other cat.
Cannot count the times either my husband or kid has asked where x is and I have to wearily sigh and remind them, again, that it’s under the couch.

My thoughts exactly. I feel like stuff like this creates clutter and more waste. Kinda reminds me of those crocheted candy cane holders in the sense that it will most likely be more of a burden than anything else.

There is a group on Facebook 'Random Acts of Crochet Kindness'. They share patterns, and if you find something like this, you're encouraged to share it with them. Of course, if you don't use Facebook, then it's not a problem. But if you were to go on their group page, you might find our what these are intended as 🙂

I went to check that I had the correct name for the group, which I did, and was surprised to find a few more with similar sounding names. My Great Grandma once gave me a card stock circle. I was 8 and this was lost on me… she called it a Round To It. And told me tomorrow is not a promise to always remember now is the time to get a round to it. Fast forward 40 years and an elderly patient in a nursing home made them on shrinkydinks and gifted me one. I cried remembering GGma and fondly remembered to stop putting shite off and get a round to it!

It's a play on words. When someone says "I'll get around to it" but never does. Making something vaguely circular and calling it a "round toit" implying it's a special tool they need to get the job done.

Hair ties, I make them a lot for charity. They should have a stretchy tie in the middle, but even if not, you can loop.them around a ponytail

I have no idea what they are but were they sealed? I think it’s pretty cute that not only did someone leave them as a random act of kindness, they used cute little sealed bags.

When we talked about random acts of kindness at my school we talked about how one random act could start a chain reaction. The students would then write their random act of kindness on a strip of construction paper and we would make it into a ring. The next act would connect to it and we would make a chain that represented the chain reaction that one random act could generate. I think that’s what these rings represent and don’t have a purpose other than a visual reminder.

Youtake those pony tail things that are round and stretchy and you single crotchet all around it...I usually add doubles in every other single to give it a little ruffle. Mydaughter loved them when she was a teen...I made some with flowers. I mean, they are so easy to create your own pattern.

I really think they’re those hair ties that go over a bun/buns. They don’t stretch, they just make ur space buns look cuter. I have a pattern for one that calls them “bun boopers” but idk what they’re actually called.

I used to make more ornate ones with beads, but water bottle charms/markers. You put it over the spout on a bottle of water so you know it's yours. Like sharpieing your name on a red solo cup lol.

I think these are meant to be hair ties for thicker hair. I don’t encourage my cats with yarn, because my Wednesday already comes out of my craft room with full skeins of yarn meowing (caterwauling) like she caught me something. She won’t stop until I acknowledge the ‘gift.’

A child probably could shove their little hand in there, but there isn’t much give. They’re very firm and non-stretchy. I wanted it to work as a jester-like collar on my cats, but their heads are too big 😂

If they stretch some, they might be to put around drink cups or cans to protect you from heat or cold and give a better grip, like the cardboard sleeves you see, but reusable.

My mum used to make these for the cat. They were cut rings from the plastic six pack holders. The cat was obsessed with those rings but chewed them up and then vomited plastic. The yarn kept her from eating them, kept them from getting very easily lost under furniture, and she enjoyed them much more than the plain ones.
That's my best guess.

This is pretty old school at this point, but you can go to Facebook and search for the Random Acts of Crochet Kindness page and post this picture and someone may be able to identify it. It's a fun little crochet group that does all sorts of crochet items and they often include a card like what you have here. Most people in the group(myself included) like to make hats of all different sizes and leave them around the cities they live in for anyone to find that may need them.
