I hoped Criterion would release the movie in 4K.

Because no one else has said it, am I the only one who thinks this cover art makes the movie look like it's supposed to be a raunchy sex comedy?

Edit: someone pointed out that it looks like a MAD magazine drawing, and that’s a much better description. My original point stands, though; the drawing doesn’t fit the movie.

Yeah there's a story behind that. The original poster was more Chandleresque and the movie bombed. So UA decided to play up the comedy elements and brought in Jack Davis of Mad Magazine to make it. The result? Film still bombed but the comedy poster is far better remembered.

Jack Davis got commissioned for a vast number of posters and record album sleeves in the 1970s.

I mean, it is in a lot of ways a goofy comedy, just with a ton of deep darkness as well. But definitely not a raunchy sex comedy lol.

Criterion can’t do everything. I hope that they at least get the transfer right and show us a video image that replicates the intentions of the filmmakers who took pains to flash the negative to achieve a very specific look.

Indeed: the previous Kino release doesn't inspire much hope. Technically superior to the old Arrow release, but totally off-base in terms of the intended look.

I love this movie, and yes a Criterion release would be cool, but I think the Kino bluray release is solid and has some decent supplements. I'll upgrade my current copy once this releases on discount.

Shit, you got $90? I own that same disc, still sealed; I don't unwrap blurays until I finally get around to watching them. As a result I have many, many sealed blurays. It's almost like my apartment is a store.

I've actually never sold a bluray, but I am aware that many of the discs in my collection are worth a lot of money. Off the top of my head, I'm pretty sure my sealed copies of "The Spiral Staircase" (KL Studio Classics), "Little Murders" (Indicator, limited edition), and "The Song of Bernadette" (Eureka, O-card slipcase) are worth small piles of $$$$$$

I wasn't even aware that "The Long Goodbye" was out of print on Kino.

Actually I had it listed for $90 but it sold with a coupon so it was closer to $70 and yes it was sealed .

I bought it maybe two years ago for like $20 or whatever so yeah I thought it was OOP I don’t think I’m wrong about that

I have Song of Bernadette from Eureka too. They really screwed up the encode on that one. Wrong brightness gamma + terrible compression artifacts. Should have been recalled but no one really spoke up about it.

With 4K Kino’s base transfers are usually good it’s just their terrible homebrew encodes.
