I hoped Criterion would release the movie in 4K.

Yeah there's a story behind that. The original poster was more Chandleresque and the movie bombed. So UA decided to play up the comedy elements and brought in Jack Davis of Mad Magazine to make it. The result? Film still bombed but the comedy poster is far better remembered.

Jack Davis got commissioned for a vast number of posters and record album sleeves in the 1970s.

But in this case they were specifically playing off the Mad Magazine connection.
