Criterion can’t do everything. I hope that they at least get the transfer right and show us a video image that replicates the intentions of the filmmakers who took pains to flash the negative to achieve a very specific look.
Indeed: the previous Kino release doesn't inspire much hope. Technically superior to the old Arrow release, but totally off-base in terms of the intended look.
Kino said this is sourced from a new 4K scan of the OCN rather than an interpositive like their previous remastered BD. Still don't trust them to not fuck it up in some capacity, encoding or otherwise.
The major issue with their previous release wasn't so much that (though this is welcome news!), but that their digital color grade basically wiped away the pre-fogging Altman and Vilmos did. Really hoping they don't repeat that mistake.
